Evolution X (2008): Decade of Domination!

P.S. I seriously can’t believe there is more hype for Clay Fighter… i mean SSBM over CvS2… disheartening. :frowning:

is evo always in las vegas? sorry if nub questions

Evo used to be held in Socal, but moved to Vegas in 2005.

DQing should be strictly enforced. When watching videos of the Marvel pools I hear Wiz announcing matches on the mic, and it’s usually multiple times he’s announcing the same match.

I don’t know if having strictly online registation would be helpful or not. It’d be nice to have so everyone could get seeded by region. I ended up facing another Socal player who I was rooming with my very first match because he registered in person. I felt a bit shafted because I signed up online to secure the fact that I would not have to face any people I knew early in the tournament. I didn’t complain about it, but I would hope that it gets fixed somehow by 2008.

Concerning the games, if the Evo staff does decide to cut down to 6 games, at least one community will be bitching about their game not making the cut. Obviously it won’t be Marvel or 3s, and I think with the new versions of Smash and ST coming out that should help keep those games in. With only 2 spots and about 5 games wanting the spots (Tekken, VF5, CVS2, GG and SC), it’d be tough to choose which of those games well deserve the spots.

Of course, it’s still about 8 months away before the qualifiers begin, so I don’t think anything can be set into stone yet.

DOA is crap so that’s out. VF is a great game but the community is crap so that’s out. Tekken sucks too so they should leave that out as well.

I vote guilty gear or having 5on5s because they are the most entertaining.

CvS2 is such a great game, I agree it takes long but I don’t think there will ever be a “capcom” game where a cast choice will be more then 4/5 playable characters in tournaments besides CvS2, A-groove is a dominating group but it’s not undefeatable. I just hope it’s still gunna be there at EVO as one of the main games to compete in.

So I guess the problem is time, and not that much hype during finals or whatever. I’m backing up Cvs2.

  • So this game is too damn long!

Lower the time limit so people don’t turtle as much. I think time limit in games are like blinds in poker, as the blinds go up, you see more action. So, if you want less time and more action in Cvs2, lower down the time limit. I think people would rush down more and take more risk, so it would be fun to watch.

There’s alot more things to be discover in Cvs2. I would like to see someone who use other grooves besides “A” to win the finals. I also like to see an American player to win the whole thing.

Why does 3rd strike have to stay? It’s ancient and boring to watch that every single evo too. Some guy from japan that plays yun or chun li winning is pretty much established. Why not just have 5on5s for the classics with gigantic prize pools.

I agree

3rd Strike stays because of the massive amounts of people that join the game. I’ll agree that it does get stale when you have Japan win every time, but every year it seems like USA is rallying to take that away from them. When it does happen, it SHOULD be crazy.

Replace 3s with tekken bowling.

I prefer the tekken ball game from tekken 3.

Heihachi was mad brokin in Tekken ball. He’s just hadouken the ball back to you and you were done.

all u need is

ST
MvC2
third strike (or street fighter 4 if it comes out like in january or something)
CvS2
Guilty gear
Smash

if u have extra time then add whatever u want

Yeah…US is still too hungry for 3S to knock it out of the game. Even if it’s “technically” one of the worst SF games ever there’s too many people who still like it and the non too steep learning curve makes it pretty accessible. Even if 300 of those people have no chance of making it to semis (let alone beating anyone in that bracket). It’s hard to tell 400 plus people that 3S is a bad game and they shouldn’t be playing it anymore. Even if the results are similar every year it hasn’t yet kept people from wanting to compete at Evo. It’s up to the community whether they want to step their game up to a level where we can knock the Japanese off one year. SFIV would probably have to come out first before 3S really dies down. Nothing coming out before that is going to get the masses to switch

I’m all for having all the 2d fighters stay since that’s what SRK is really about IMO. Promoting those 2d fighting games that we’ve come to love over the years and show the masses that these are good games and their depth goes beyond how much graphical power the game is pushing. Promoting the newer 3d fighting games is definitely good and all and helps to bring numbers but SRK should definitely still stick with its roots and keep the same 2d fighting games we used last year. They’re all established games that continue to hold their foot with dedicated players every year at Evo.

Lower time limit forces even more turtling and strict use of top tiers. I’ve tried this once in a tourney and it isn’t pretty. Seriously, the game turns into nothing but runway.

Hahaha…really! I guess it doesn’t work then.

keep cvs2. same as every year . dont like watching then do something else with your time like going back to your room and play whatever, smoke, take a walk outside, get something to eat,hit up random bar, etc. simple as that

I dislike GG. However, it is the only game that is staying true to the spirit that evo was created in.

People play ST, 3s, Marvel, CvS2 out of habit. They don’t play for the community anymore, they aren’t playing for the spirit of the tournament. They only play those games because Evo features them.

therefore, keep GG.

Yes, we should lower the time limit and maybe even use the standard round format like SF3 and SF2 or something.

Since rules state that unlockable secret characters are not allowed in CVS2 then why can’t you pick E.Ryu and R.Iori since they are there from the start. Plus it would add new life to CVS2 if you allow those 2. I mean you can use E.Ryu in SFA2 and you can use Devil Jin in T5, etc.

E. Ryu and R. Iori aren’t in the arcade version are they? That’s why they were banned or so I was told.

As for lowering the time limit to encourage more aggressive play. Lowering the time limit does not stop turtling. It makes it a much more viable way to win as by landing one solid hit that puts you at life advantage you have to turtle for a lesser amount of time to win. If you notice when rounds are running down in CvS2 it isn’t the one with more life scrambling to kill his opponent it’s the one with less life as he is going to lose unless he lands a combo. Why this is boring and i’ve seen several CvS2 games go to time most rounds don’t make it to time as it is so i’d just leave it where it’s at. Giving someone a lot of time encourages more intelligent play and actual aggressive attempts by both sides as the “leader” knows it will be a lot more difficult to maintain his lead for 80 seconds than 20 seconds and therefore will attempt to actually defeat his opponents character in a lesser amount of time than 80 seconds as it is a more viable way to win than trying to sit their and block for 80 seconds.

Having CvS2 in any other format other than 2/3 also for the players is unfair to them. Winning one match even if by a large margin doesn’t mean to much considering there are combos than can nearly kill a character in one go. Beating someone in 2 matches shows more consistant play skill, and the person that should win is naturally the person with the most skill. (The winner would be skilled regardless naturally but it’s very possible several skilled players would lose out before they would in a 2/3 format because of lack of time to adjust to their opponent and/or to that rare fuck up of their game such as the random fucked up CC or what not that rarely happens in their game) A gimmicky fighter who relies on only a small number of setups can win 1 match with some luck, but he’s hard pressed to beat a competant opponent twice.

I’d advocate GG as one of the gaming options simply because I like it more than Tekken5:DR though it is a strong option as well.

GGXXAC has a strong community in America and most of them hold regular tourneys (maybe not every week but many once a month or so). The American release of GGXXAC also has drawn in more new blood to the scene. In Oklahoma besides perhaps MvC2, which I personally despise, it is the most played game around.

One thing that may help increase turnout is make the GGXXAC a singles tourney. Now even though I believe the format to be hella fun and good for the game (As the rules help to promote character diversity), It is more difficult to get 3 people to setup a trip to Evo than 1 person. This would need some consideration, but it might be able to do the trick.
