Evolution X (2008): Decade of Domination!

Why can’t Evo be four days? Do you guys really fly to Vegas the day of?

Yeah. Work isn’t convenient for some of us.

Nevermind losing 2-4 days of work for a video game convention.
Nevermind that adding another day would stretch Evo Staff’s resources impossibly thin.
Nevermind if pools were held on a Thursday, the winner of those pools would have to wait 3 days until Finals.

Adding a fourth day is counter-productive for everyone. There are ways around it, and I think we’ve already got a good idea for what to do next year. It’s just up to Evo Staff what to go with.

Here’s my idea recap:

  • of headlining games should be 6-7, at most

  • Have Friday for nothing but BYOC, starting at 12pm. Have it run ALL night so if people want to run small tournaments late, let 'em. That’ll leave more time for headlining tournaments, and less distractions for the players.
  • Saturday: have extra TVs put into the main hall so people can play casuals of the games being run that day, 2 TV each game. I don’t think 14 TVs are impossible for that. It will mean that the BYOC room will have less TVs. HOWEVER, if a rule that prohibits headlining games being played in the BYOC room is enforced, no one will mind, leaving plenty of TVs for people to run casuals/tournaments in other games.
  • Sunday: fine the way it is
  • online registration ONLY
  • instead of disqualifying on the first absence, drop the guy in the loser’s bracket. if he’s already in loser’s bracket, just disqualify him.

I’m 100% certain this will make Evo run great next year.

also keep in mind that sbo is normally ran in the spring time, around march, every year. with the exception of this years(anyone know why it was late this year?).

i do have to agree, tho, regardless of SBO, evo needs to be earlier. lots of people are college or even HS students and they cant afford to miss classes. i remember when this shit was held in middle/late july, and its just progressively moved towards to end of august.

I hope I’m not too late in sharing my opinion on these issues.

There are a few ways that might help Evo. Many were mentioned already. Eliminating last minute registration, and having players wait 10+ minutes before their next match are great ideas. Here are some more ideas that may help.

1)Bigger money for bigger games; smaller money for smaller games. This will provide official incentive for a game’s community to do more work. Also, it makes clear which game is biggest and removes any ambiguity regarding this. It was understandible that in '06 all games started out will equal sponsorship, but we pretty much know now which games are the biggest. Don’t misunderstand, this is NOT a measure of importance, quality or anything like that. It’s simply determined by a game’s turnout. This is already done in most other professional tournaments, and it works. In addition, there’s little reason IMO why DOA, VF or any other untested newcomers should recieve as much money as Marvel or 3s, who reguarly get 300+ entrants. It’s as simple as that.

2)Cap the entrances at Evo world, forcing more people attend the general Evo series to qualify. Evo world having open entry to any 14-yr old pad hero is great and all, but 400+ people for one fighting game is pretty rediculous. What if it’s 500+ next year? Aside from making Evo bigger (more equipment, more staff, bigger venue, adding another day, etc.), most other things are stopgap solutions. Knowing the exact number of people that will show up will make Evo World that much easier to run. Much more could be planned for, and barring a power outage or natural disaster, the schedule could be pretty rock-solid. Actually, it might even get a little boring.

3)Run more of a game’s tourney at the Evo series. For example, play out a game until the top 8, and have those players from Evo east, west, south, and north attend evo world and compete in a 32-man bracket. Or, for example, take the top 2 from the Evo series and have them play only the top 8 finals at evo world. This can be configured any way you please to make more room for other events. Some people might be saying, “well I can’t attend 2 evo events. That’s why I go to evo world.” So, sign up early for Evo world. If your game is smaller, support it, and maybe it will be fully represented at Evo world next year.

In addition, I think the Evo series should play host to lesser fighting games. Think DOA may not work at Evo World, or sfa3 turnout will be too small? Evo regionals should be a testing ground for all things Evo World, and encourage growth among smaller games in the fighting game community. One of the things the Evo series can do is relieve some of the pressure of running Evo World. I think should it take this role, the main event will be a lot more fun and less frustrating for those involved.

SBO was two weeks before Evo only this year. This never happened before and you have no idea if it is going to happen again.

My opinion - Evo is in America. It seems that you are putting the interests of 4 or 5 players that will need some extra rest over the interests of hundreds of players who have to deal with real life issues. I dont think anybody who has a real shot at getting the 5K will care too much about the SBO date too. I also dont think SBO keeps changing its date to avoid conflicts with Evo.

Finally, I was just summing it all up. Those were not my opinions. We have a single opinion of a single person (that been you) that thinks the date for SBO 2007 is the single most important piece of information for decision making about Evo X dates. Every other person that wrote about this prefers Evo a week earlier. I just reproduced the views of the majority.

Imagine if Evo changes its dates because of SBO. Then SBO next year happens in April again. I would like to read what Evo organizers think about this issue.

for real i’ve missed class this year and last year for evo :frowning:

i’m ALL for it being early next year…

Most points have been done to death but there is one thing that definitely needs addressing:

DO NOT CAP REGISTRATION

It blows my mind that the community has done so much to expand and get mainstream coverage only to have people actually suggest that registration should be capped at a few hundred players. What exactly were we striving for all these years?

If 3rd Strike gets 1000 people next year, find a way to make it happen. If it means that you only have online registration and it has to be closed at least 48 hours before the Friday of the event then do so. However means necessary, make it happen. The key is to be pre-emptive, not counter-active.

well moving sbo to that timeframe makes complete sense then. it still really doesnt change the fact that evo needs to be earlier in the summer

i think only one game should be run at a time
i got dq at evo 2k5 from mvc2 while i was in 3s
and they tried to dq me from 3s while i was in st
and they tried to dq me from t5 after they put me in another mvc2 bracket
this happened cause they lumped all my games together at the same time

i think having all tv’s available for 1 game and doing the pools till they finish and same thing with the semis would be a better idea

and might help to speed things up
having it one game at a time means people will be forced to stick around for that game instead of possibly getting called to another game and dq from the game they were just at

They did that ((one game at a time) this year. Its the best way to go, but requires the most ammount of equipment (copies of games) to setup.

ah good to know they changed it

What you’re saying makes a lot of sense and I agree, however… This year at Evo world, having 400+ players entering 3s resulted in only one game for tournament matches. The last thing that anyone would like is having Evo’s resources over-extended.

Most pro gaming tournaments have a cap on entrants to ensure staff can handle everthing. This number isn’t inflexible at most events either. If staff notices a much larger number of people want to sign up in 08 than did in 07, they could raise the cap a little to accomodate the new players.

There is also the Evo series. Players have the option to go one of the regional tournaments to try and qualify. More players attending the Evo series wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Let’s hope Evo X will be as hype as everyone in You Got Served!!!

Also, like I said earlier, Mitsubishi should be the sponsor for Evo X instead of Toyota, because Mitsubishi is releasing their Evo X in 2008 as well!!! so we can play games inside/next to an Evo X at Evo X :wow:

Also we can breathe new life into CVS2 and make a CVS2 side tournament using the single match format, ala old school.

SBO?? Oh yeah…that Japanese tournament that I used to want to go to. Yeah…that one.

100% agree, that would be really bad for the scene.

Why can’t we push the whole Evo process back a month, so that Worlds ends up in July? I haven’t been to Evo in three years because I’ve had school stuff to attend to.

They ran that in '06. Didn’t really breathe new life, but I think it’s interesting. Hell, I’ll run it.

I hope Soul Calibur 4 is tournament worthy, if so put that in the next evo.

No matter what you do, not everyone will be happy, but i think CvS2 continues to be a large part of the current community and there will be alot of disappointment there.

Personally i came for 2k4 and was going to make teh journey for 2k8… but no CvS2 will definitely make me go to the Toronto Tourney this year instead.
