Evolution X (2008): Decade of Domination!

Don’t forget about Justin in CvS2…he waaaayyyyyy leveled up with the switch to C-Groove.

Top 8 in a double-elimination tournament is not even close to enough to determine the 8 best in the world, as that format is only truly accurate for top 2 at most. You need to look at all the tournament results over a long period of time to get any kind of decent answer.

One request: NO MORE OFFICIAL TEAM TOURNAMENTS PLZ. Not even because I think it’s a bad format or anything, but because of how badly the qualifiers work with it. Teams that qualified often can’t get everyone there, so they either have to go through pools AGAIN or get to add new mystery members at the last minute! Just too much of a mess, IMO.

And I’m going to repeat Sabre’s question and go just a bit further…what were the turnouts for all Evo games? We know 3s was like 432 and Smash was around 270, but what about the rest?

Thanks,
Josh.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Pott’s you are too much

He’s Justin Wong,he can do anything.

I once heard he Perfected somebody in Marvel using his feet

Yeah, I said that already. Though, when someone think about the top 8, it should be the best 8 players in the tournament. I am just saying that it is not hard to believe that the top 8 for 3S will be just Japanese players. I like round-robin the most since it is the most accurate … but, it takes too long and no one wants to play that long.

Don’t take any of my comments too deep though, it is just my opinion.

By the way, Mew2King and PC Chris are crazy at SSBM.

Honestly, I know the level of smash is pretty high in the US Scene but if japanese players actually took smash seriously as how they did in Street fighter games, I think your US heroes would get owned. I know there are some japanese smash players but not on the level as the SF japanese players.

When I went to Japan, they are not as godlike as what people say. Don’t get me wrong, they are good but not as unstoppable. A random japanese dude cannot come to the US and just win a tournament with top players in it. I was playing 3s and cvs2 there and racking up crazy wins. But SBO I lose because of one game and that means I get raped over there right? You can ask arleith. We were together the whole time in japan, and I was playing musical chairs with those fools.

But with the argument of intergating in another game. Its not that smash players don’t want to play other games its because its really hard for them. I know some pretty good smash players that gets like top 16 in big smash tourneys and they are pringles in SF games. They dont know how to use a joystick for their life. Ask a smash bros player try to throw a fireball. 9/10 smash players probably can’t. But it can be the same concept as me doing that grab infinite thing a mig with marth against fast falling characters. Even though I can, but 9/10 of the sf players probably can’t do it.

I know that the smash community is mad at evo due to the smash tourney, but hey. This is EVOL which consist of various videogame competitions. This is not OC3 which is just a SMASH Fest. Deal with it immature smash community. SF players had the same fate as one game also. It wasnt you that got shafted. CVS2 was one game and 3S was one game.

Left you forgot but its beens stated on this forum that Justin has played smash and can not beat the likes of PC Chris.

Also wheres Justins placing in Tekken this year? Not so good.

Justin has talent but lets not say he can do things that even he admits to not being able to do.

I will not let this thread deterioriate into a shouting match. This is for discussion of next years events, not to cry about what happened this year or who is better than who.

Stay on topic or ill close this thread.

HAHA I never knew I played smash and I never knew I playd PC Chris before. Good information. I did played the game but I only play it in a free for all with my friends that like the gamecube system.

And Tekken? Ask somebody from ny when was the last time I played Tekken.

Please get your information right. THANKS

Should I edit my posts? I was not trying to offend anyone, especially JWong.

As for Evolution 20XX, I think we need to have a commercials or news interviews to get the word out there. Heck, having a page at video game magazines would be great as well. I mean, Evolution is popular, but only to the fighting game communities. A lot of people that I talked to about Evolution has no idea what it is but can recognize the Daigo comeback right away.

Also, we should have popular titles that everyone knows in the US.

When I was at college today, I asked my classmates if they play 3S. They had no idea what I was talking about. But, when I asked if they play T5, SC3, and SSB, most of them knew exactly what I was talking about and half of those people played those games in the past. Some of them are even hyped about T6 and SC4 and they don’t even know that there are communities for those games.

I think those are the type of games that we need. We need titles that most people in the US can recognize quickly. If people see those games at the roster on a magazine, they might be hyped up enough to go to Evolution.

Now, I am not saying we should have T6 or SC4. Even if there are going to be a great influx of sales for those games, it does not necessarily mean that people would travel for them; especially since that most players are casual players.

However, since T6 and SC4 are going to have online play, the community would grow quick. I think T6 and SC4 will have a shot at EVO2K9, along with SSBB. However, it is too early to claim that.

PS: I think DOA has a large community as well, it is just that a lot of them do not know about Evolution. My friend John had gone to many DOA and SC2/SC3 tournaments before had no idea what Evolution is. Even some of my friends that plays 3S has no idea what Evolution is but knows about Tougeki. This is why I suggest some sort of broadcast to get the word out there.

We had SC back in the past evols. I understand where TAIPING is coming from by adding more commercial games but the problem with that is EVOL is still traditional and they are now going off a little tradition by adding other games in such as Virtual Fighter, Smash Bros, they even had mariokart ds last year. The reason why alot of ppl kno about sc4, t5 and ssbm is because its a “COLLEGE” game. The sterotype what people have on smash is that its a party game. Why? Because its on the gamecube. I’m not saying it is because I know its not but thats why that game is really big. Alot of people play smash but not the 1 vs 1 thing. More of a free for all at college. I went to visit my friend at college and next door was a bunch of college kids playing free for all smash. But I do agree putting in new games and taking out the old. It just depends on what games.

I guess he’s saying that you play the game like for fun on the side, but you aren’t good enough to beat PC Chris. Not neccessarily saying that you have played him before.

Anyway,I like Potter’s idea.

You vs Choi was dope.

I’d like a Combofiend vs Justin Wong

I never said you played it seriously lol, but my mistake. And I only mentioned PC Chris because I thought it was a member of the empire so it may have been logical that you two have played before lol. But if I’m wrong then I’m wrong and sorry for the false info.

I agree with this. Before cutting any games, try using more TVs from BYOC. I think the tourney should come first and everything second. If people really wanted to play random game 6000 they can do in their hotel rooms. If the pools for any individual game ends early, throw those TVs back to BYOC. This should really be given thought and tried out next yr. And if it’s successful in cutting time maybe you guys can add an extra game or 2 to the tourney. I’m curious, how many people would be interested in cutting out BYOC all together if it meant evo could add more games to the lineup??

Also, i know it’s been mentioned in the thread but DQs really need to be enforced, and this doesn’t only apply to evo, but all tourneys in general. Everyone knows what time the games start, you should make an effort to be there on time, if not early.

Personally…I wouldn’t mind if BYOC was taken out completely just because it’s a pain to play casuals for 3rd Strike and I dont really care to play casuals in other games any ways when I get there. When I go to tourneys I’m usually just focused on playing in the tourney. Sometimes during casuals I’ll just let people take my turn or let them play a match. It’s not that big of a deal for me to get casuals in with people anymore in 3S. Even top players. Like I just dont have that want to play all the good people a bunch of times before the tourney starts. Especially with how long you have to wait to start playing any ways.

As for the other games…I think it would be more of a problem. People who seriously play games like Melty Blood and SNK games that dont have as big of a scene and are looking to expand their scene…BYOC is like their one chance of the year to do it. I mean people can say stuff like “SNK is shitty blah blah” but there are people in the US that like SNK and KOF is definitely still rather popular in other countries.

It’s people like them that are looking to get their games to catch on and the BYOC gives them a chance to get those games exposed. I didn’t play any of the casual BYOC games except Super Turbo but I did have an interest in some of the SNK and other games that were there. After this Evo I’ll be interested in playing Melty Blood and I really hope KOF 98 gets popular. NGBC is cool too.

How’re you still jocking Tokido and Ino at CVS2? Do they honestly still look hella sick to you in their matches?

And Nuki didn’t even get out of pools this year in CvS… and FOUR people got out of each pool…

Anyway, I’m in favor of cutting out BYOC as much as is necessary for the feature games to run optimally.

I wouldn’t mind seeing BYOC leave completely.

Yeah, yeah… SNK… Melty…insert other random scene… I really don’t see what BYOC brings to these communities. We’re all fighting game players… We’ve all heard of these games, and either decided to play them or ignore them. Seeing them in BYOC isn’t gonna cause me to have some epiphany about the game. HnK still looks dumb as shit… even in Vegas. There’s no reason to crowd the Evo floor with that shit. Take that shit to the room.

Do you think the Melty tourney would have had a whopping 45 entrants (and 12-13 teams) with some actually getting rejected due to time constraints if it was held in the room? Come on now. BYOC actually DOES make people wanna play new games if they see some cool shit in the game. Nothing wrong with liking the old capcom games that we’ve played for 2/3rd’s of a decade, but BYOC is one of the best chnces in the US FGC to promote new games, and actually be able to play international comp.

On that note, I fully support Trag’s idea to put big byoc tourney finals on the big screen. It would be a sick idea and it would be evo’s way of promoting ourneys for small or growing scenes, even if they dont support them officially. Of course if you wanna add any of these new gams to the official Evo roster then that’s fine by me too. :lovin:

Wanting to ‘shoo’ the BYOC away is just shameful. Just because YOU dont like something RIGHT NOW, does not mean that it can’t be liked by others, or even grow to have a very respectably sized scene. You may even end up liking it in the future.

This needs to happen in the main event hall. The reasons have been stated 10x over.

More tables and more TVs could be set up in the ballroom, if evo had access to them and the ability to run power away from the walls of the room. There is a lot of ‘wasted space’ in the ballroom, and it wouldnt be too difficult to lay it out so that there were a good 6-12 more tables full of TVs for byoc or pools (whichever needs them).

i agree with this. i don’t hate on seeing cvs2/mvc2/3s/st/all the other games every year but it wouldn’t hurt to see the finals for arcana/melty blood to spice shit up.

Yes, because HnK used up 4 TVs. They only used one TV, dude. And the only people there were me, Mago, Nestor, Hydra, Laugh and 4 others. The most we did was crowd a chair.

i was one of those players too man havoc u need to get ur facts straight before u speak smash was taking up more tvs after their tounry was done bitch out the smash players not HnK
