I don’t understand what the tension is between side events and main events. A side event is no different from someone deciding to sleep in or play Monopoly in their hotel room.
You can support an infinite number of side events as long as you make sure they don’t get in the way of the main events. Now realistically that would mean that side events would be inconvenienced and harder to run, but that is what you would expect for a side event vs a main event.
The problem is the mentality that side events need to be catered to, when in reality they need to do the catering.
You don’t see baseball games put on hold because guys in the dugout are in the middle of a rousing game of Go Fish.
We didn’t fuck with anyone’s game the entire time we were there. None of the side tournaments did. And by the time GG came down for singles we were down to three stations anyway.
You people have to stop bringing that shit up like it was hurting the main games because it wasn’t. Priority went to main games and first foremost for Geese’s setups, as well as ours, and anything not associated with main games (ie Marvel teams, 3s teams, GG teams, whatever).
Yeah…I think it was more so the idea that Evo was thinking that they didn’t necessarily want to ruin anything else to get the tourney moving. They know there are people who appreciate the convenience of the BYOC room and know it’s been a staple of Evo for years. I’m sure they weren’t really planning on kicking people off Melty Blood and KOFXI side tourneys just so there’d be a chance that 3S may have run a little more organized. I mean they really could have told everyone to F off so they could use those extra TV’s but I think they understood what the people on those other TV’s were trying to do. Get offline competition in games that throughout the rest of the year they almost never get a chance to.
Well the MB tournamen at EVO was a huge step foward for us, and we have a crazy event coming up next year that I would hate to see done away with because of no BYOC. This is their tournament however, and if they choose to they can get rid of the BYOC, though I’m sure that would damper the spirits of alot of people.
Also, in reality MB only took up 3 televisions, the rest were monitors, and Dark Geese was running shit on like two tv’s the entire weekend. That’s hardly a call for abusing resources ;p.
I’m not sayng it was you guys’ fault. All I’m saying is that, had that been MY tournament, I would have taken all the BYOC TV’s, the TV’s that were running Mario Golf, the TV’s that were running that Yaris game, and some TV’s out of hotel rooms to make sure that 3S went off without a hitch.
And that’s not because of any bias. If you think I hate MB… I really hate Third.
The reality, though, is that 400+ people came out to play that game, so during the hours on Saturday that were dedicated to 3S, I would have used ALL of my resources for that. BYOC could resume after Third, but not a moment sooner.
I just don’t want people thinking we were trying to fuck anyone else over is all, and in a way I agree with the need to use all those tv’s for tournament anyway, but the problem would arise with ‘getting them back’ after they had fufilled their use in saving time.
The BYOC was pretty damn big this year though, I think it took up half the entire ballroom.
you know that photo release form you made us sign? add to that form a line that says ‘i hereby certify that i have read and understand the rules for this event’. then you even have it on paper and no one can complain about being dq’ed
Disclaimer: *I have no idea how to run a tourney, nor am I a regular participant in tourneys. So take whatever I say with a grain of salt. *
3S, MvC2, CvS2, and ST should all be definites for the next evo. All of these games have been within the community for a long time, and simply deserve their place among the lineups. Each game has a dedicated following, with guaranteed player outcome(except for maybe CvS2).
Tekken and Smash should both make a return to evo next year. They’ll both probably be on their next installment by then, so we’ll have to see how everything turns out for them.
All 6 of the previously mentioned games should be held as 2/3, just for the sake of keeping everyone happy. Smash should be moved down the 3 stock, and 3 minutes(which will free up a hell of a lot of time).
No team tourneys! IMO I’ve never liked them in the first place, and they seem to troublesome to run especially at an event like evo.
GG, VF, SC and DOA should all be cut. Lets test the games out in the regional qualifiers first to get an idea of what the general interest for the games are. Then decide if a tourney is worth being held for those games.
Online registration only. Being able to have a set in stone schedule before running an event would help tremendously.
Keep evo a 3 day event(4 days is just asking for too much time for people to place in their schedule). And heres an idea of how it should be organized.
Day 1- Semis and Quals for ST, CvS2, and Tekken
Day 2- Semis and Quals for MvC2, 3S, and Smash
Day 3- Part 1- sid tourneys/special events/etc. Part 2- Finals for all games
I say GG, because it’s interest level isn’t as high as the other six previously mentioned games(except for maybe CvS2). And if GG must be run, then we should just go with singles instead of the team format. It’s much easier in concept(as far as time is concerned), and I don’t like the idea of team tourneys in general(but thats more of a personal thing). But as I said before, take what I say with a grain of salt, especially since I don’t know what the GG community is really like.
