You were not sleeping. You were playing Marvel. No excuse.
I meant both. But regardless, I would’ve been there if it were later.
3S MvC2 Cvs2 and ST are all self explanatory why they should be at evolution, period.
Smash is bringing in #'s and is a good game so I understand why it is in.
Tekken is not just A, but THE staple 3d game in America. I dont what version is what and blah blah blah, Tekken should always be ran. Its not going to do anything but get bigger.
Guilty Gear, even though I dont play it and dislike it, it should always be at evolution because it is part of evo’s history and it DOES have a major following and is another game (outside of 3s and CvS2) that japan and US compeat in and is always fun to watch on evo dvd.
That is seven games. Evo says it has a hard time scrunching all the games into 3 days. Here is the solution, I GOT IT.
Take some of the money you make! Rent larger venues and buy/bring more tv’s and systems for games to be run on. That is the only solution to “please” everybody. Anybody that runs a BUSINESS knows this. IF the business gets a lot of DEMAND then they INCREASE their ABILITY to DEAL WITH IT TO MAKE MORE MONEY. Investing to earn and grow? Any other solution will be stepping on someone’s toes pissing them off their game was left out and just holding the scene back in general. I understand money doesn’t grow on trees…but supply must grow if demand does.
how do people feel?
sponsors dont just appear like the fungus on polarity’s dick, you either have to find someone willing to give you money, or charge larger entry fees, which alienate the community.
edit:
One thing I think would be interesting is have Aksys sponsor the GG Evo tournament. Evo should still put in some money, but I think Aksys would be interested in sponsoring a game they’re releasing. Namco might even do something if you let in T6. Those would be the “best best sponsors” besides uh… whatever the latest Toyota gimmick car is.
I was referring to power333 or 999 or whatever his name is.
Didn’t even know inkblot used to play, never heard of him playing GG, oh well. And I think the operative word would be “used to” play, if that’s even the case. In which case, a grudge wouldn’t be a bad guess, looking at his position and history. But if you know him to be chill with it, then I’m just flat out wrong about him since you seem to actually know him. Sorry about that.
As for “everyone hates GG” i think it’s more “everyone just assumes GG has a small scene since they don’t pay attention” …except during GG finals, which was freakishly low in audience attendance considering how many people showed up to evo specifically for it. I bet you a LOT of people just simply missed the GG finals, and weren’t aware of it until later on. People DO need to check the schedule more…
But this cutting games thing? I really don’t think it’s the answer. Keits and havoc are right. The suggestions given to you by the south american fighting game event guy were absolutely perfect. I don’t see why you haven’t responded to him, trag. His post was more valuable than the rest of the thread responses by a long shot. It seems sad that you really want to cut games instead of shore up how you actually RUN the event. Efficiency is definitely possible, and we could hold 8 games if you would just sit down and draft out a strict schedule with that guys guidelines in mind. Evo itself could be run quickly and without confusion, both players and the audience would have a much better idea of when things are going to occur, and waiting for people would never be an issue again.
I don’t see how any other option could possibly be better than this one. It needs to be looked into more thoroughly before you even THINK about cutting any games at all.
As long as I keep making money betting on my boy flash and garvin in GG, it’ll always have a place in my heart.
I love you, Flash (no homo) and your performance at Evo 2007 was awesome. And I love Guilty Gear. I think it’s one of the best fighting games ever made. I always try to support the game and make sure it lives on and I try really hard to make sure the community survives. Many of the guys who go only for Guilty Gear are really good friends of mine. I’m saying all this 'cause I want you to know that I really want Guilty Gear to survive.
But you are incorrect on all three points you put up.
- We have never had this problem before. We’ve had 1 person missing from various games, maybe 2 at tops. But for the most part, the two earliest games have never been missing players. But when we ran the intro for the game and then the interview for the first team (BAS’s team), NONE OF THEM WERE THERE. 0 out of 3. For team MatlockDown, only 1 of 3 was there. For team Yossan, only 1 was there as well. And your team, 2 of 3 was there. That means that 4 out of 11 people were there at 11:00. And then the one player in question never even showed up until the final final match. That’s simply inexcusable. The tournament was supposed to start at 11:00. It started at 11:30. We’ve never had this bad of a rate of players show up ever. We ran Tekken at 11:00 last year, and guess what? All the players AND their entire community showed up. Tekken at 11:00 last year was MAD HYPE. I love Guilty Gear, but being in Vegas and it being at 11:00 isn’t an excuse. It just isn’t.
-
There’s no one to blame, then, but the players. You should know when your game is. You should check the schedule. That is not even remotely valid as a reason for players not to show up. Have you ever seen a tennis match at the U.S. Open postponed because one player didn’t check what time he played?
-
I already stated that 4 people were THERE and 7 were missing. A few people showed up soon thereafter, but only after being called by cell phones.
The community is huge. And we get great numbers for the game every year. And the game is FUN. I mean… FUN FUN. I love it. I will keep playing it. It’s the only other game I play (besides ST). I want to see it flourish. But this isn’t the way to give itself a good name. The fans need to be there. I guarantee if Smash were at 11:00, all the Smash players would have been there. And when Ken and Hugs were battling it out, the audience was mad loud. They would have been at 11:00 as well.
For Guilty Gear, we don’t need Justin and Yipes to play Guilty Gear. We need the fans to be there to cheer on FlashMetroid!!! You think Yipes and Justin became famous because people knew them beforehand? They became famous because their play is damn inspiring. Watching you take down Team Kabuki was TRULY MAD HYPE INSPIRING SHIT, Flash. And the fans should have been there jumping up and down and hollering and hooting. LOUD. Then we don’t NEED Justin and Yipes. You WOULD BE Justin and Yipes. YOU should be the famous name of Guilty Gear right now, and the community should be carrying you on their shoulders. That’s how you build up a community for a game. Not by bring other games’ heroes into yours, but finding your own heroes.
11:00 is not an excuse. As I said already, Tekken was mad hype last year at 11:00.
I agree with this post 100%, perfectly said!
And as for Smash and GG players only playing one game, that is incredibly far from the truth. I mean, I’m a GG that plays Smash, lmao. Of course I play other games too, but those are the ones I can properly compete in so far.
Thing is, I think cutting a game like GG, is like cutting off a flowers bud before it can grow. GG is the only 2D game on the roster that blesses you with sequels and updates, something people complain about when it comes to other games.
Also, you wanna be careful not to turn EVO into some sort of Capcom event; there are many players to tend to out there, and bringing them all together creates an atmosphere of appreciation and respect for every game and every scene. It would be lovely to see players branching out alot more, of course, you only have so much time, but you wont know what can or cant be done unless you try.
Also, dare I mention giving a game like Arcana Heart or Melty Blood a shot? Of course, numbers are important; but let us be honest, having say 80+ dedicated and devoted players is better than having a player base of 200+ where only a fifth of the players truly give a damn. Numbers wont have to mean a thing (in terms of audience) if people were more in unison; like there may be 80 participants for a certain game, but you have a crowd of 250 cheering the game on in the finals. It is that kind of overall respect and good nature that can really help the overall scene.
I guess what I’m trying to say this time, is that games should not always be decided by number; rather, that should factor in when considering games as returnees for the next event; otherwise, some scenes and people may never be given a chance. One slot a year for a new game that has a considerable following should be thought about. Check out the Arcana Heart thread for example; rarely have I sat and read through a topic that long, but the people that play it just make it interesting like that.
maybe if your a kid
you come to vegas once a year what are you going to do?
Drink and stay up late hoping to wake up in time for the tournment?
or go to bed early so you can watch finals and then sit around waiting for cvs2 and 3s (or whatever)?
not saying its evo’s fault but seriously, anytime before 12 in vegas is way too early imo. So im not surprised on the turnout.
I’m 25. I managed to be awake on time every day. Your point about being lazy/young/whatever is invalid. The case was closed with the fact that Tekken at 11 was hype.
Please…for the love of all that is holy, don’t get rid of ST
I’d like to put in my 2 cents on the subject of GG being included. Considering that the game is still an import right now and it still had a decent turn out, that really goes to show that it has some support. There’ll be an American release soon, and with that, a lot of new players and more access to the game.
I also think next year should be done in traditional format. It’s much harder to get participants in the game when it’s in team format because not everyone has connections with other good players to form a decent team with. Traditional format also helps decide who’s the best and what not.
I think this year’s turn out was lack luster for a couple of reasons. For one it was fucking early, and I know people have time restraints, but come on. What gamer is up and ready at 10:30 to battle it out? That’s not fair to the players that came all the way out there to play. The team format really did hurt it as well, I believe.
But other than that, there’s a lot of support for the game and I’d be really sad if the first evo I could make it out to didn’t even have my main game. So please, keep it around! There’s plenty of players and interest.
Also, good shit on SSBB and SC4! I agree with the addition of them.
3rd is crack. Marvel is cocaine. Let’s make GG that heroin. Oh and yes…GG people are a bunch of crazy looking drunks…and its cool.
Couldn’t agree more. I really hope that the mods and tournament organizers dont think that cutting games is a good idea. The more people and diverse set of people playing at Evo we have…the better. We can definitely have 8 or 9 games and have them run well IMO. Evo should really get past the whole “SF games” thing. Games like SSBM helped to do that. Bring in new players without overshadowing the games that have made Evo what it is for years. Guilty Gear is slowly becoming a concrete part of Evo but there’s still a lot of people who dog on it because it’s not SF or the people who play are weird or whatever.
I definitely wasn’t the one running brackets but I really believe there could have been other measures made to make things more organized and get games running on time. Not having to take such drastic measures as making multiple Capcom games one match to declare a winner. There just has to be other ways.
Oh and yeah…I was turned off by BYOC after Evo 2k6. Just not organized and takes too long to get in and play matches. Especially if you’re playing something that everyone likes to play like 3S. If you’re not good you’ll maybe get a game or 2 in and then not be able to play for another 30 minutes or longer any ways. Especially when everyone likes to play 2/3 games. There needs to be a rule on that. One game and if you lose GTFO. LOL. 2/3 matches is a waste of time. It’s not a tournament. Accept the loss and get off the game.
i don’t think its invalid at all. It did have something to do with the fact that gg was the way it was. Point is, not every gg player was there because they where sleeping. Didn’t say its someone else’s fault, but that is the reason why turnout for finals was like that.
Even so, GG players showing up late for the finals was horrible. I’m glad they pointed it out and are essentially hanging a sword over our heads. That should have never happen. What’s even worse is that Marn was visibly sluggish because he had just woken up, him actually being up and ready might have put America at the #1 spot.
People need to be responsible and get there early. No excuses barring emergencies (no getting drunk and not waking up on time is not an emergency).
Yeah…all in all you just need to plan better for next year. If you wanna get doodoofaced in Vegas do it when you know it wont cost you time needed to watch or especially COMPETE in important events. Come a day or 2 early or stay 2 days after the tourney and get retarted then. You can get cheap hotels to stay in during the week at like 40 to 50 bucks a night. Split it up between your boys and get destroyed then. I just turned 21 3 months before Evo and I was definitely ready to jump out and hit the clubs. Yet…I made sure it didn’t necessarily get in the way of my tournament schedule. Stuff that I already paid money for to compete in. I understand how troublesome it is for bracket makers when they call people and they’re not around because they’re busy doing something not as important or just simply didn’t make it. I want to be around and ready as soon as they call my name the first time if I can definitely make it possible.
Yet…I understand people have their money matches and what not and that’s all good but there’s nothing like being ready to play in and advance through a tournament. Even when I play money matches my head is not really in the game like it is in a good tournament match.
I only went out clubbin during times when I knew I wasn’t going to have a tournament game coming up. Seeing that the only 2 games I entered this year was 3S and Super Turbo that made things easy. 3S didn’t start till 12:00 on Sat and Super Turbo was around 8. If I did want to do something I would just make sure to come back and get a full 8 hours rest before then. Yet…I didn’t even do that. I just didn’t do stuff Friday night. Got there on Thur and we all did stuff that night and Sunday night after finals instead.
To quote Ino (when someone was like 2 mins late):
“In Japan, they lose”
Welcome to Evo 2008!
The Tekken argument against Guilty Gear isn’t really valid. Here’s why:
Tekken players generally only care about their game, so they could all wake up at 11:00, watch finals, and then go back to bed.
Guilty Gear, on the other hand, has way more players with an interest in other 2D games. So, the mentality here was “since Guilty Gear is so early, I can just sleep through it and wake up later since the most important games aren’t until after Smash”. That’s definitely what I did.
Rather than make scapegoats, I think it’s important to look at ways to make the schedule more efficient while at the same time buckling down and getting more strict about no-shows. With the above in mind, the BEST way to hold finals is to group the fighting game genres together (Tekken / SC4 with Smash Bros. and all the 2D games next to each other). That way, nobody has to worry about missing a game they would like to watch/have hype for, but realistically isn’t a good idea due to suboptimal scheduling.
Another 2 comments.
- “Run things more efficiently” is not a great answer. At Evo2006 absolutely everything ran flawlessly and we finished exactly on schedule…and still had 14 hour days Friday and Saturday. Right now we’re in a position where absolutely everything must run perfectly or we start falling behind and some game gets screwed.
Instead of tournaments from 9am to 11pm with a good shot that one tournament gets screwed, how about 10am to 9pm, with 4 special events afterwards? Sounds a hell of a lot better to me.
- The massive sense of entitlement is boring me. Evo is the biggest open fighting game tournament in the world. We take the tournaments very seriously, and all we ask is that the players do the same. And players don’t even show up? The VF5 players managed to show up at 9:30 am. The Evo staff, which was loading TVs onto a truck until 4am all showed up at 8:30 am! You think, “they were drunk and didn’t look at the schedule” is a reasonable excuse for that?
But let’s not pin it all on the teams that played on Sunday. Did you know that some players took a 1/2 hour break before playing their last qualifying match to get into the finals? Crazy shit went on in this tournament that would be inconceivable for some of the other games.
To me, the only games that get a free pass to 2008 are 3s and MvC2, for obvious reasons. (Please don’t play the “inkblot is biased” card. I hate 3s and played GGXX and #Reload…a lot).
…but that’s why it’s on you.
Yeah, players act like asses a lot of the time.
DQ those fucks and keep it moving.
You can’t have a lax attitude about it, as the tournament director, and then take measures that basically punish the players regardless of whether they were culprits or not.
I was at my pool on time. I even caught an error, and had it fixed before my pool played it’s first match. I was around during semi’s listening for my name at all times. To now see that games are being cut because of time constraints, despite my compliance to rules… it’s kind of annoying.
You allowed the players to engage in the stupidness that they did.
If people can show up late as hell with no penalty, then what’s their rush? DQ. DQ. DQ.
You can cut each tournament down by HOURS if you force people to check in at the start of pools, and DQ any fuck that wanders off. Simple.
