Evolution X (2008): Decade of Domination!

Just incase you didn’t know GG is by FAR the most popular fighting game in Japan right now, AH isn’t close.

I highly doubt AH would be able to get any bigger than GG in the US either way, and they’re even considering dropping GG, so I think the chances of it at evo are slim at best.

I agree with flashmetroid.

GG is a very popular game throughout the US. It always get bigger #'s then every game except for 3s and mvc2.

GG only had poor turn out due to how early it started. When I got downstairs, GG was already at the loser finals.

Plus its a team tourney. If it was singles, more people would be there I believe.

For CVS2. Even though it doesnt have as much #'s as most game. It is the only game that brings Japan and US together, meaning its the only game that we can contend with. Each year, US gets closer and closer to win at cvs2 against their best.

Funny thing is, your name isn’t in your sig. So, care to backtrack on that a bit? And good shit on picking up AH. We need all the more players for this game.

Reading is fundamental. Notice how I didn’t specify AT ALL that AH is the trend. I was basically going with the “anime-style game” point. GG, AH, Melty Blood, Basara, etc. That is the current trend in Japan’s scene.

You went directly from AH to “latest trend”, it sounded like you were just talking about it. You are correct about anime-style games.

So at this point the major GG players who have posted up answers in this thread have delivered a strong counterpoint as to why the game should remain on the evo rotation. We’ve cited examples to every major question and complaint that has been brought up, so instead of more bickering about mindless posters who’ve contradicted themselves across 9 pages, I want to hear the Evo Staff’s response to what we have laid out on the table for you. Like I said earlier, I would argue that alot of guilty gear’s “problem” lies in the fact that the big names just don’t get involved, but a mere 3 posts up you have the biggest name in US fighting games giving the thumbs up for the game.

So, what more do you guys want? Though I think it would be ridiculous that we need to do anything more to prove GG’s worth to the staff, I can assure you that if ask it, we will freakin do it, because we care about the game that has made us a part of the Evolution community.

I don’t think the Evo staff needs to make it any clearer than they already have: GG needs a visibly thriving community. That means frequent events with good turnouts, that are well publicized (see also mad hype) over the next several months. Let’s shut our goddamn mouths and just start doing it.

Or DON’T you want to have frequent tournaments?

I’ll tell you one thing, if Justin and Yipes plays it seriously (like really seriously), the impact will be fantastic. Maybe we can get Choi into it, and Ricky back into it. The real goal is to make the game so big that it’s impossible to cut.

Also, no matter how many times I’ve said it before: Nothing except MvC2 and 3S is a lock for next year. Nothing cut is final. Nothing added is final. Be positive =D.

Recommendation:

There needs to be 2 series of large scale tourneys.

You can’t run 16 games at evo.
And no one wants to see x side game take over cvs2, right?

So have EVO, and have all the stuff evo normally has like marvel and sf and etc.

Then have EVO2 and have it be all the other shit like vf and mb and arcana and gg and all the snk shit.

Everyone wins.

The capcom people don’t have to deal with the games they like being cut and the people who have been bringing up scenes for their new games now have a chance to shine at a tournament not overshadowed by mega marvel hype.

You need to lose that arrogant attitude. You’re completely in the wrong here.

The GG finals were at 11:00 AM. That is not early. Nearly every game we’ve run during the EVO finals has had better attendance than the GG finals, including last year’s 11:00 AM DOA4 tournament. The only one I can think of that has had worse attendence is the 9:00 AM Mario Kart finals from last year.

When inkblot said that none of the teams bothered to show up for the tournament on-time, that’s exactly what happened. It wasn’t just one person. Entire teams were missing. We called all 4 teams to the stage to play and only 2 members of 1 team showed up. That’s incredibly disrespectful. This was the only time I can recall at any Evo that anyone has failed to show up for their finals on time, and all 4 teams are guilty. If something like this happens again next year, we’re certain to disqualify the offenders and they can go home with $0.

I can pretty much guarantee that won’t happen again if it’ll be singles next time. It’s still inexcusable, though.

Here’s a suggestion. Now, before you read this, take in mind that it is ONLY a suggestion. Here goes:

MvC2 / 3S / GG / TK5:DR (or SC4) / SSBB / CvS2

OK, the 6 game schedule is still the main suggestion for time reasons. Give all of the big games a full run at 2/3 instead of being forced to compress everything to 1 game and have zero time for big events on the screen, or dinner breaks, or whatever.

What’s missing? STHD. Well, we know STHD is not going to be perfect. I personally like the idea of giving the rebalanced mode a try, but I’m not sure how well that’s going to be received (we will find out soon enough). The only perfect version of ST is arcade… and we know that’s not gonna happen. The alternatives are either a) accept ST rebalanced mode as a “new” old game, or b) AE (which also isn’t ST). I’m not hating on either games here, I’m just pointing out that we will never have a perfect version of ST again (unless some miracle happens).

So why not run ST as a side tournament. Perhaps someone can bring their supergun (I remember something like that a year or two ago). Have a real ST tourney on the side, and we won’t have to worry about playing an inferior version, and have the Japanese take our money using some slow-stage BS! =D

Anyway, this is obviously going to cause an uproar (just a suggestion!) but let’s see what happens.

The other major suggestion is to have finals on both nights, leaving plenty of time on Sunday for everyone to arrive to watch whatever finals we have. For example: maybe on Saturday we have TK5:DR and CvS2 finals in the evening, and on Sunday, we have remaining qualifiers for 2 of the games (in the morning, but not too early, as we are only running 6 games now), and we bookend Sunday Finals with big games (start 3S, then Smash, GG, finish with MvC2). In fact, since we only would run 6 games (in this “suggested” format) the finals may not even need to start until afternoon, and we possibly wouldn’t need to run any qualifiers on Sunday morning.

More time for big matches, BYOC tourneys etc etc etc.

Anyway, post up.

I’m all for this. Do this and I’ll make everyone play GG.

:lovin:

The way I see it, attendance at this year’s evo for GG players was a fluke.

Inkblot seems to be the one that has a grudge against GG. I would bet money that he eats his words about GG’s community come next evo.

And shit, all we have to do is have lots of huge ranbats and tournaments and majors and regionals left and right to be garanteed a slot? Well, I guess we don’t have to change anything, since THAT ALREADY HAPPENS! ARE YOU PEOPLE BLIND?! Christ.

Power, your logic is flawed all over the place. Trag is right, you just keep twisting words.

Inkblot definitely has no grudge against GG. Remember, he used to play it hardcore in NorCal. None of the Evo staff are twisting anyones words (not sure who you are referring to). Let’s keep this positive and focus on the future of EVO (all games) instead of pointing fingers and assuming everyone just hates GG.

Remember, negativity is only going to make people put up their guard and not want to talk to you anymore. The whole goal of this thread is to get people talking, thus coming to a mutual conclusion.

Exactly. The excuse that ‘its vegas’ is just lame. Go to vegas for a vacation sometime, or stay there before or after Evo to ‘party hard’. But, Evo is not a vacation. If you come, and you enter, you have no excuse for not having read the rules or the schedual.

This post killed me:

2.) Wow, what kind of total dink do you have to be to fly to vegas for a world championship and never look at the schedual? Oh, you just assume your game will start when its comfortable, so checking is just too hard! (the schedual was posted in like 8 places in the room, and you could ask at the staff booth easily too, and it was online weeks before the event…)

Do you guys also just show up at a movie theater and freak out when the movie isnt schedualed to start for two hours (or, more likely, started two hours ago)?

Edit - I think the lineup this year was fine. VF might be iffy, and Melee should obviously be replaced by Brawl… but I don’t see a reason to change anything else other than making GG singles and being more strict with DQs for time’s sake.

Good points, Keits.

However, the idea right now is to reduce the overall number of games, but do the ones that remain “better”. Meaning, intros for every game (not just half or so). Make sure there is plenty of time between games. Give more time for other events on the big screen (which are ALWAYS a huge draw, sometimes even bigger than finals).

I’m simply trying to find the best case for only a 6 game lineup. Who knows, EvoX is a long long way away. Things can (and always seem to) change.

this thread is getting to that point where it needs to get closed, because people stopped making any amount of sense a while ago.

in my opinion, the “big three” (cvs2, mvc2, 3s) should never go anywhere, unless a newer, better version of those games crops up. guilty gear, the big three’s cool cousin, should be a staple, and the guilty gear community needs to figure out what version they’re going to be playing every year. and they need to be playing singles, not teams.

the latest widely-available flavor of tekken should be present. tekken was fun to watch, is a great game – even if i think it’s kind of silly – and brings in good numbers every year. it also seems to get more straight up respect than soul calibur does any given version.

smash bros. is the biggest fighting game out there right now. when brawl comes out, all bets are off. and what is this shit about the communities not mixing up between each other? i have a bunch of friends that play smash that went to my fiu tournaments and became interested in learning other games like 3rd strike or cvs2. likewise, i had people that played both the traditional 2d games and ssbm present. and even then, the most entrants by far were for smash bros (35+, the winner took home a nice, comfy $300 or so). you can’t ignore it.

after that, it’s up to what game decides to be hot. if snkplaymoreusa did its goddamned job and kofxii is released by the end of the year, we might be able to do something neat like xii, but the chances of that happening are almost nonexistent – because snkplaymoreusa sucks. vf5, as much as i love it, keeps pulling in like no players at all. ditto almost for soul calibur (although that scene may be a lot bigger) and doa4 (which already has its spot at the wcg and whatever the hell that thing on directv was, so let them have their fun i guess).

what other ideas do people have in terms of games? do we really want to give mb or ah a shot? do we have any other choices?

Why???

Obviously time restraints are an issue. I don’t understand why cutting the number of games is automatically deemed the best answer for this. To me, that should be a worst case scenario. It’s not like everything was run in the most efficient way possible.

If all other measure were taken to keep things on time, and it still didn’t work, then yeah… cut some games.

This clearly wasn’t the case though.

I’d much rather see BYOC cut. I’d much rather see players just get DQ’d. I’d much rather see better organization in pools/semis. I’d much rather see a whole bunch of measures implemented before we start talking about cutting games.

AGREE! Why cut anything, when all we need to do is train the staff and DQ some suckas? A tournament tests your ability to play AND your ability to show up. You can be the best in the world from your house, but you can never be champion until you show up. RITE EMIL?!

Disagree! BYOC is heart and soul! Side tournaments are amazing for people who want to be competitive at a game with a smaller scene. Breaker’s Revenge is blowing up, people!

I’m speaking for myself and about 10people I was playing marvel with during GG finals. If GG started later, we all would’ve been there to watch, and to flip money on flash’s team over mw’s team.
