@ the people complaining about single game double elimination and losing their first round

When you look at the top 10 and look at the bottom 10… do you think it really matters if it would of been double game double elimination. People are complaining about getting knocked out in the first round like they would of actually made a difference in the 3s results if it was double game double elimination.

Yeah…well it definitely does make a difference as far as the people who weren’t going to make top 3 to begin with. I mean I could have very well gotten 2 and outed because of the 1 game change. Yet…the way my character works and the fact that very few people know how to play against her to begin with…the opponent literally has to be more skilled at the game than I am or it’s free wins. Which is why I had no trouble running through average players who have never fought a decent Ibuki before. I really had no reason to worry about getting randomed out unless I did something stupid myself.

Any kind of change in the rules will alter what could have happened but like the top 3 people IMO at least would have placed the same regardless. Tokido and Nuki were definitely taking top 2 and after how well Valle performed last year…I could only imagine seeing him doing better. From there it’s a real mishmash but generally if you just set your mind out to take that one game then you were definitely worthy of your placing regardless.

Everyone’s worried about what they would have done if it was best 2/3. IMO if you weren’t going to make top 2 or 3 it really doesn’t matter that much any ways. If you weren’t going to be top of the top to begin with then try again next year. I got within top 25 great. Didn’t get any money or prizes so I can’t complain

I’m not trying to crap on anyone, but I’m just trying to say that the TOP players will adapt to any rule thrown at them regardless.

EDIT: DJ just said what I wrote.

Some people want to maximize their tourney playing time, regardless of how well they think they’ll finish. People spend a lot of money for Evo, and they want to get their money’s worth. 1 game just doesn’t sounds like it to me…

there’s always casuals.

I’d be happy to put my money in to enter Evo. The government has my ass in chains though so that’s not going to happen

Tourney and casuals are two very different things. Yes, you could do MMs, but really, people come for the tourney and the experience. Personally, I would prefer two games as well, even though I know I wouldn’t get top 3. I think most non-top 3 players feel the same way.

True…for those that are used to 2/3 double elim each year and/or got peaced out 2-0 I can imagine them feeling a little taken advantage of. At the same time though, it is one game and if you were really trying to make that one game count you’d still get your money’s worth out of it. They even gave us the benefit of resetting the brackets for semi finals. If you qualified everyone was put back in the winners bracket and could lose once without getting knocked out. Still one game but IMO it’s just as good or better than 2/3 and being in the losers bracket. 3rd Strike one game allows for a lot of craziness but if you’re playing hella solid you can work your way around the random factor.

If there’s anything playing in tournament this year in Vegas taught me…it’s how to take advantage of the time you’re given in one match to win a game. I definitely learned especially by watching other high level players go at it how to use the first and second rounds to guage your opponent. During KSK ranbats you only get one game to judge your opponent any ways until semis and grand finals so that’s just what I tried to do. I tried hella hard to win the first round so second round would be my round to guage the opponent. Then win the 3rd. You just had to bring the hard stuff from round 1 because you only get 1 game to do it. If you get that first round you literally take control of the fight and the opponent has to work harder to try and even things out. Being able to have a free round to understand your opponent works in a lot of ways.

I’ll be honest…after last year I definitely wasn’t coming to Vegas just for 3rd Strike. There’s way too many other things to do in Vegas especially after you just turn 21. I was not going to let my trip be just about 3rd Strike. It’s clearly been my favorite fighting game for years but after not being able to do anything else but sit around and play games last year…I wanted to treat myself to something new. Not that there’s anything wrong with it but…it’s Vegas. Even if I did go 2 and out I’m 21 now and I was gonna find a way to have fun. It just happened to work out that I qualified out of my bracket after losing terribly at Evo East (minus beating 1 strong player) and going 2 and out last year in Vegas to people I’ve never heard of.

But it feels a lot better to beat someone. You feel more accomplished getting out of pools. So I would say yes it does matter beyond top 3 to other people. Not only that, but the people 4th-8th place made a pretty penny.

I don’t know how anyone can imply “top players will adapt.” So are you saying some of the no names that did really well are the real top players? Why aren’t they doing as well in tournaments with 2/3 format? Maybe if we start to see consistent results that lineup with what happened at EVO for a while I’d agree, but I doubt that will happen.

Well what I’m trying to say is that with single match there’s a bunch of beasts and they’re all going to just beat each other until about the point where it’s just whoever is left vs. whoever is left of the top players. Which is pretty much what happened and quite a few people that should have made the top 10 or 20 spots ended up near last. You just had to play that one match like your life depended on it. The rules weren’t gonna change and IMO you just had to want to win. If you thought about what would happen if it was 2/3 you were already gonna lose.

All I’m saying is that in a single match format the only results that are really solid are like the top 2 or 3 players. Everything else is a mishmash. You just did the best you could in that single match and if things didn’t work out…plan for next year. If you’re worried about if you could have made some money through placing 4th-8th place…you’re coming to Evo for the wrong reason. It really shouldn’t be about the money. Especially when you have to place 5th or higher to do more than pay for your trip. It’s obvious that things will be more organized next year so that’s what we’ll all be planning for. This year should already be in the past seeing that a lot of people didn’t agree with what happened. Evo 2k8 is only a year away. There’s plenty of people that went to Vegas and lost a lot more than an extra match to compete in 3S. We know the guys that run Evo are smart people and I know 2k8 will be more organized.

man single game can really mess w/ things. but a huge turnout is always a good thing. its for the greater good i guess. but maybe an ideal future would work like sbo, have a butt load of quals all over the country, then only those players go to evo world, but thats another discussion…

i think everyone expected nuki/tokido 1st/2nd, but VALLE 3rd - he’s pretty strong this year, props to mr. street fighter. i wonder why no japanese yuns came.

I didn’t see any Japanese Yuns this year at EVO.

Edit: I just realized your actual statement. My best bet would be college. A lot of colleges begins between August 24th to 27th.

Probably a few reasons why there were no Japanese Yun’s but I’m sure one of the reasons is that the Japanese knew they had a chance of winning even without them. Which means less plane costs and all that good stuff. They always split the money amongst themselves no matter who wins any ways. I think it worked out for everyone because IMO finals were a bit more entertaining this year without all the Yun mirror matches. Yun is cool up until you see about 3 different mirror matches of him in the finals. Not to mention it was interesting to see people play out on the big screen that may have no been up there had the rules been different. Just a good change of pace IMO.

I’d rather watch Yun mirror matches than Chun mirrors.

I wanna see RX, Roshihikari and KO yang at evo
