I think that was because Evo decided to use 4:3 so they just followed suit, or they only had 4:3 TV’s avaliable.
Widescreen please. Give it a chance.

there’s always the fact that people without HDTVs can’t practice in widescreen, while people with them can practice in 4:3
but are there enough people without a widescreen tv to care?
As far as I can tell, in east coast majors, the aspect ratio used is just determined by the aspect ratio of the TV used. On 4:3 TVs they use 4:3, and on widescreen TVs they use widescreen, including NCR.
I.e. most people don’t even notice the difference when they’re not looking for it, honestly.
(My own stance is still “don’t care, both are fine”)
Ok EVO this year will be 16:9 widescreen after the partners took a vote.
Practice up!
Woot!
Who are these “partners” and how many of them consider HDR their primary game?
Personally, I find 16:9 to be disrespectful to the heritage of ST. The underlying game was just never meant to be played in anything other than 4:3.
Perhaps the guys that allow SFII to still even exist at EVO?
HDR got the second largest number of entrants last year out of any game, so it is in their own best interest to “allow” it to be there.
Yeah, I suppose, but if you saw the stream last night, it was being treated like a joke, and they had to talk about it like most of the people watching it had never seen it before.(probably true), that doesn’t look good for its future.
Also, second to SFIV, but closer to third or closer to first?
What were the numbers?
closer to third, sfiv had 1000, hd remix had 300, next was around 150?
I guess an idiot treating SF2 like a joke and SF4 like the real deal is pretty much an analog of a person to disregards 60’s and 70’s music and recommends whatever pop POS music is being marketed at the moment, for the sole reason of being old and not (when compared to commercial music) popular. Giving any importance to such people or their opinions is just a mistake.
No doubt.
HDR is usually the second or third highest turnout at most majors and it’s treated like the red headed stepchild.
Sickening.
West Coast Warzone 2 and Devastation is the only majors that come to mind that gave HDR actual spotlight and hype.
Well, i know that some people don’t like HDR so much just because sirlin made it. I don’t understand why, but some people simply don’t like him.
I’m not knocking the game because its old, but whether you guys agree or not, ST’s engine is not what the current generation wants or needs. ST isn’t going to see money like IV. Casuals are where the money is at, and IV got a lot of people back into FGs and got them to keep playing too.
Do you blame Capcom for going away from the ST engine?
I know it sounds bad, but SFIV got 1000 entrants, and HDR got a third of that? Second place doesn’t sound so close anymore.
Thanks for the info Wheezy.
This is gold.
The only issue with that is that you can’t look at ST or HDR from just a gaming POV. You also have to consider it from a business/company POV.
Sure, its age doesn’t make it bad. It is harder to sell something old like that though, on top of its rather less than beginner friendly entry way.
I’m very interested to find out how much the participation will drop off at EVO in '11. This year will be packed because of Super, but I doubt we’ll see '09 or (probably) '10 numbers again. It’s one thing to get new players to come out, but to make them stick around year after year is another.
Capcom kinda did market IV on the SF2 name. By including and advertising all of the old characters from II, it automatically drew in a lot of the people who gave up on SF during the Alpha and III days. I mean, they could’ve just as easily decided to go the III route again and only include Ken and Ryu and even more new characters.
Please, not this argument. IV has everything that ST has in terms of difficulty and accessibility plus a ton more (one frame links, combos that rely heavily on dexterity, more complexity due to more match ups, etc.)
As for tourney’s there isn’t a specific reason to not carry it, unless the numbers do start to dwindle.
Eventually all of these old guys are gonna have arthritis and carpal tunnel. At that point the newer generation will be the primary players.
If you want SFII to survive, you’ve gotta get the young players interested in it. Especially if there is any prospect of a SFV in the future.
This is awesome! Looking forwards to Evo more than ever!
There it is.
