haha thanks again guys for your support…
tornadoflame, that was the best post i ever read in my life lol.
Lol but yo im not gonna play valle for the spot. I have no interest/desire to. That socal team is buff as fuck and will win the regional tournament.
Of course I wanna be on the socal team but, fuck it, im not, so its all good…the people that are on the team will rep it to the fullest. You still have to understand, there are tooooooooo many killers here in socal, someone wasn’t gonna make the team so its completely understandable.
If I was team captain, the first player I woulda dropped would be the Honda player too lol
Well I just don’t understand why pick the team so early in March when Evo isn’t for another 3-4 months. I mean what if within those 3 weeks, someone like Keno who isn’t considered for the Socal team wins 18 straight SF4 tournies. Why not pick the team in a month or two, especially since AI and Denjin just started their seasons. That would be a shame if someone who every Ranbat but still wasn’t considered for the team cause the teams were picked early in March.
And haven’t we learned from the past… Socal should ALWAYS have 2 teams in these kind of events. There are just way too many good players in this region and people are always getting snubbed because of it. Even if there was a playoff, someone is going to get snubbed.
I’ve placed first or second in every single SF4 singles tournament I’ve ever entered except my very first, in which I’m pretty sure I still got top 8. I’ve also placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the SF4 teams tournaments I’ve entered (including a couple times where I teamed with Valle). Since my first tournament, the only time I’ve not gotten 1st or 2nd was the Cal Regionals team tournament, which was literally the first day I’d played Street Fighter since November and things had already changed pretty significantly.
Unfortunately none of this means very much. I had to take three months off (not counting CR), and in the month since I’ve had free time I still haven’t really had time to get back to the arcade more than 3-4 times. Nowadays I’m way out of practice and not very good, and I not only have to get back to where I was before, but to where everyone else has gone since I stopped playing, which is pretty far ahead of where we all were in November.
I don’t mean to say that I think I deserve a spot on the Cali team now; the point is actually that I definitely don’t. I’m posting this is to say that I don’t think picking the Cali team so far in advance is a good idea. Lots of things can change in the several months between now and Evo, both in that some good players may drop off and some new players may come up.
Under the system put in, Alex has the right to pick anyone he wants in any way he wants, and I get that. Few people are as deserving of that ability as he is. And he’s picked a strong team, one that I expect to do really well in the tourney. But personally, I would have made a slightly different team, held qualifiers, or at least waited a while to figure it out.
I think this touches on exactly whats going on. If you don’t have respect for Valle and his talent at SF, you’re just being silly or naive, but I think people are ready to start recognizing the new generation of players. The old guard is established. When can we start immortalizing a new set of names? There’s tons of people putting in an enormous amount of work into this game, and it’d be a shame for it to be tossed aside for people with already established names.
The team is picked, so w/e, but people should understand why people other than MIKE ROSS are concerned about this.
When the new names start to consistently overtake the old names. Like what NKI and AfroLegends have done in ST.
Valle’s been to SBO for 3s, this experience between new players and old players is pretty similar between that and now. To do well you’re going to need a strong grasp on the basics on top of everything new that SF4 has thrown at us. Valle has learned his lesson from that SBO experience and I doubt he’ll be as naive now as he was then (IIRC from the gootenks podcast).
Mike Ross, he’s still got the SRK wildcard and if he keeps up his performance he’s bound to make it. Besides Valle can still change his team if he feels the need to. Evo is still several months away.
Can’t really start ‘immortalizing’ peeps until they’ve done something on the big stages like Evo, SBO, etc. I mean sf4 hasn’t even had its first official tourney showing at Evo yet…so kind of premature to proclaim anyone anything…including Valle. Most of the country just got this game so time will tell.
I like how all the California people are like, “You guys are doing it all wrong! Valle is so dumb! Teams shouldn’t be this or that, lalala.” but then they’re all like, “All players on Wild Card team should all be from California because we’re so good that we need 3 teams and no one else should even be considered for Wild Card team because seriously, we’re already set!” And even though MrWizard is already like nope, people are like, FUCK IT I’LL STILL SUGGEST 3 TEAMS FOR CALIFORNIA!
Good luck on that though, really.
But onto Marn’s thoughts… I think this exhibition was made to see who the best coast is obviously, not just coast, but mid U.S, and so forth. It’s not an exhibition to see who can randomly win one tournament and be on the team (spot suggestions, etc). It’s about people who can prove themselves and what not. I think I’ve seen at least 20 different people win a California tournament. You can go through a whole list of people, and you can choose 5 who work well together, and that’s what Valle did. The other spots, what happens if someone won the spot and was just on their game that day, get on the team, and then straight get destroyed?
So I think in Valle’s mind, instead of going through people, he went through a process in which I believe is fair. He picked people who could team together, and he picked people who have already and not necessarily need to prove themselves any further, although there are probably people better than those people he picked. He picked a team that could have a group synergy. What if someone was on the team that everyone else hated, but he could be the best on that team? The team would obviously vote for him to go first, and maybe even hope for him to lose… Who knows? And I believe he picked people who he thinks could stay calm under pressure cause they’re all tournament players. All these aspects and more that make someone worthy of an Exhibition spot.
Sure, they could all be butt buddies and friends and they could have massive gay orgies, who cares? It’s not like he picked up some random dude who gets 17th place all the time… If he did, then I’d agree with you guys being mad.
yea that hawaii shit is the real sad part. mr wizard should give them their own team if they can get 5 solid players. otherwise no one in hawaii will get picked : (. i seen them in CR and they were putting there all into it
Everyone knows that Dagger_G and I are established 3s players. But, we haven’t been playing 3s recently although we’re a set team for EVO2k9. We’ve been playing NOTHING but SF4. Practicing every week and holding round robin ranbats every single week.
I think we deserve a shot and we won’t disappoint. Also, we’ll have live feed starting this weekend, so we’ll showcase our matches.
this is an exhibition, why would i want to see 53215 socal boxers play? sounds like a really boring way to spend time in vegas if you ask me. id much rather see a honda player over ANOTHER balrog (wildcard fixes this). if socal is allowed another team it will ensure that im not going to watch but of course i have no problem with an exciting player or 2 from socal making the wildcard team.
Yeah, Hawaii has always been full of beasts in every game. Though they seem to be forgotten and slept on each year. Mike Ross + Hawaii = Team Pac South.
