PSASBR in my eyes is not a tournament worthy game.
Now for my picks that aren’t a troll they will probably be:
SSF4AE: Staple UMVC3: Staple TTT2: A good new game with a good amount of players
Those are really the only games we can probably tell for now. SFxT: Terribly unfinished game/takes up too much time, but it will still probably have a fan base because it is Capcom. And Capcom is going to make me wait for 2013(which will probably fail) so I can return it for like 10 bucks. I wish I never bought that game it was a complete waste. Injustice: A very unknown topic because of the release date and not much is known about the game, but will have a strong fan base because of MK9. MK9: Has a good fan base but it will probably get the boot because of all the new games. Id hate to see it go but if it is replaced with Injustice id still be happy. KOF: A solid game with a somewhat limited fan base but still a good contender/ its kind of time consuming. P4A: A game that died too fast but it probably wont go to EVO over these newer games/re-balances. DOA: A very slept on game which I don’t know much about but will probably not go to EVO because it is different. Soulcalibur: Another slept on game with a OK fan base but it might get the boot because not many people “care” about it anymore and its different. BlazeBlue: A good game but it’s hard to say how it will turn out Skullgirls: A good game that is basically the same as one of the staples so its hard saying if it will go with the patch and all.
Overall I like the idea of having a game limit from companies. Maybe a 2 game limit wouldn’t be so harsh. After all it is the WORLD fighting games tournament not CAPCOM.
That is one of the reasons I like Big E tournaments because they give a chance for every game so it appeals to every player.
But sadly EVO doesn’t work like that due to time restraints.
For what it’s worth, I’ve been thinking P4A/MK9 is about even. I’d admittedly written P4A off back in October/November, but it seems to be surprising people. And KOFXIII certainly warrants a round 2 just purely for having the most non-Capcom entrants last year.
Street Fighter 4 AE
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
Tekken Tag Tournament II
King of Fighters XIII
Persona 4 Arena
Injustice
Street Fighter X Tekken
Playstation All Stars Battle Royale
I think 8 games, Soul Calibur V Mortal Kombat Skullgirls & Virtua Fighter 5 could still have side tournies
More entrants at majors plus international competition
I believe that game will be
SF4: AE
UMVC3
TTT2
P4A
Injustice
Another game
The sixth game is the wild card. I don’t know if PSBR even has a community yet. KOF has been slowly dying off unlike MK which has been steady for a long while. Then there is DOA/SC5/GG/more games.
Even over at Dustloop, the P4A forum is very quiet. The main P4A discussion has a small handful of posts per month and character forums generally average 0-1 posts per day. By way of comparison, the TYM has constant chatter, both in the general and character specific forums.
I’m shocked at the lack of people saying MK9 like their community isn’t still showing up and supporting their game.
Why are people acting like NRS can’t have 2 games at EVO? (assuming Injustice comes out in a resonable time frame)
I don’t like MK9 at all but big, supportive communities are what gets in. Face it, if you had to pick a 4th community that’s supportive, you’re looking at MK9 or P4A.
BBCP will be out in like May/June for consoles. That’s too late.
Message forums aren’t really a great way to determine the amount of people playing a game. A lot of the people that play in tourneys don’t post on forums. Like even at the local tourneys I go to…only like 5 of the 20 to 30 people that may enter tourneys there are like regular SRK posters. Not everybody likes to post or has the time to.
P4A, Skullgirls, Injustice, and all of the other animu games will be there.
Yeah, I think the earliest I heard people guessing was like May 2nd. Of course, if Injustice were to get in on April 30th and not BBCP on May 2nd with the reasoning being release date, I’d think it fishy, but I realistically don’t see it coming out until late May or June, like you said so I doubt it’ll be a problem.
Message forum numbers are more reliable than “a feeling” someone has. If only 1 out of every 100 forum posters actually attend events, you can reasonably extrapolate that a forum with 400 active posters will generate more tournament entrants than a forum with 3.
Right now, the support I’ve seen for games like P4A are people (without Evo banners under their name for the most part) saying that there are large numbers for tournaments, without any links to evidence. Similar to the people who say that KOFXIII is a lock because of its “mad hype” finals, which really doesn’t mean anything when compared to attendance data.
I still don’t think that’s the best way to judge exactly the amount that is coming for anything other than maybe SFIV and UMVC3. The Evo banners won’t really mean anything until sign ups start for this year any way. There’s a lot of people that go to Evo or other major events that don’t post on forums or have an account but rarely post.
I’m not getting into the whole thing but I don’t see what the fuck whether someone has an EVO banner under their name or not makes any difference as to how credible things or people can be. Hell, I’m sure if people want to know the numbers for P4A at NEC they can just ask like…James Xie or Dacidbro or Lordknight or something and solve it quickly.
KOF - 24
Skullgirls was also there, but I don’t know the numbers (prob. lower than kof ones).
Anyway, my take:
SF4 - still the most popular fighter; it’s a given
MvC3 - same as above
Persona 4 - well received by critics - best 2012 FG; well received by the community - usually is the 3rd game in tournaments. Fills the anime spot at Evo. Unless something really wrong happens, is almost a given too.
TTT2 - Evo has a spot for 3D fighters, and tt is the best placed to get it, being the newest, Namco’s flagship, and the fact that SC V and VF don’t make any waves in attendees numbers. It’s place is quite asured, too.
MK - has a solid community (see numbers above).
The rest:
SFxTK - evo staff don’t love it (see MrWizard), didn’t make any waves at Evo 2012, and after evo almost disappeared from tourneys. Even in 25th qualifiers tourneys, where sfxt had the biggest prizes, the attendance was on par with 3S and ST (2 games that are 15-20 years old and have small communities outside Japan). Unless 2013 patch makes a miracle, sfxt doesn’t have much chances to return to evo. My prediction - the miracle won’t happen.
KOF - mad hype at Evo, but it’s numbers are falling down fast - see above - kof is way below p4 and MK. Might have a chance for the 6th spot, but otherwise…
SC 5 - ttt2 is better positioned as the 3D fighter at Evo. Not many chances
Guilty Gear - surprising numbers at FF, but I doubt this trend will continue. Also, P4 is better positioned for the anime spot.
Skullgirls - doesn’t make enough noise in tournaments to have a chance.
Injustice - the game will arive too late, and is difficult to say how well will be received. I don’t think it has a chance.
Playstation AS - are you kidding me ?? I can’t believe some people think this game will at Evo. Critics weren’t impressed, FGC wasn’t either, doesn’t have a solid community and tournament numbers to back it up. The only thing it has is the Sony support, and I really doubt this will be enough. Yes, Smash was present at Evo, but Smash is actually a good game with a dedicated community. No way.
BBC - a wild card. If it turns to be really good, might take P4 spot, but I really doubt.
In the end:
1.SF4
2. MvC3
3. TTT2
4. P4
5. MK
6. If there is a 6th spot - KOF.
I’m pretty sure GG having numbers at all has a good bit to do with the game recently being released on XBL and PSN. Without that. I think some other attendance things might be a bit different. Either way, people are forgetting last year when everyone had written off MK9 for another go and said everything fell off for that and it got a 2nd chance. I think people are being way too quick to write off KOFXIII.
Yeah if KOF13 has the most international turnout it’s not really too much of an issue if numbers are falling in the US. It’s most likely getting enough worldwide support where there’s a good chance for it to return. The game probably has more international players from some countries than UMVC3 or SFIV do.
SFIV, UMVC3, TTT2, P4 and MK sounds like the best bet. Especially considering the potential sponsoring from those game’s companies. Now that the game companies themselves play a more active role in the tournament community…that plays a good factor too. P4 is another Atlus game any ways so if KOF doesn’t make it, they’ll just be doing the same thing except for a game that brings more US turnout. Namco and WB will obviously have no problem throwing down again for their respective games also.
Few reasons. Less arcade machines of Climax. Plus there’s an undercurrent of stigma against it like SF4 had for being “too casual friendly”. It’s nowhere near as outspoken as it is for SF4, but it’s there.
