Evo 2012 needs to change

Well, it’s certainly up in the air, I’ll admit. And while it’s very likely SFxT is in there, with all of the complaints about it, the real question is if it’ll be the success people would be hoping for with it, or fail like some are fearing.

Me and 6 other friends are going to evo from mexico and it’s mostly because of kof(duh). With stereotypes aside, I know I will drop the trip and maybe a few others if kof doesnt make it. It was a fun trip in '10 but AE 2012 isnt enough to warrant the trip, nobody takes marvel seriously over here and even less the other games.

Hope evo hits all sides of the spectrum next year. I know its hard but one can hope.

News flash: MK had the 3rd most entrants at EVO last year.

Let’s look at the last two majors:

NEC XII

AE- 228
UmvC3- 231
BBCS2 45
MK9- 70
GG 36
T6 86 man (SC5 on demo)
SC4- 57 entrants (SC5 on demo)
KOF XIII - 57 (came out a week before)

SCR-

AE- ~ 200
MvC3 ~200
MK9- 53
SkullGirls- 83 (free tourney w/ 1000 pot?)
KOF13 ~75
BBCS2-40

You can conclude one thing for sure:

Blazblue is done. If you can’t crack 50 at majors, you’re a side show.

Well, that was concluded when wiz busted on it as well.

KOF 13 has a serious shot. It’s attendance is on the uptick, and word in my state is that a lot of people are playing it. SRK doesn’t have an anti SNK bias, it’s just that they haven’t put out a good product that garnered a large scene in the US is over a decade. They may have one here.

MK9 gets better numbers than the “buzz” would indicate, but hype and numbers are fading for it, unlike AE and Marvel. I think it’s return is 50/50.

Tekken still outperformed almost everyone else at NEC, but TTT2 and SC5 demos had to have boosted it. I expect it to be gone for SC5.

SFxT is a major Capcom release. It’d be crazy to think it wouldn’t even get a shot at EVO. Remember, EVO’s taken fliers on games before (mario kart, DOA, smash brawl)

Skullgirls is going to be way too niche to be a main EVO title. EVO doesn’t have a way to guage what the scene will be like, and sales forecasts can’t be all that high (unlike a MK9 or SC5, which are million sellers). Not to mention they haven’t even set an exact release date yet. Expect an invitational or something.

My thoughts?

EVO expands back to 6 games and EVO staff will hate life.

AE2012
UMvC3
SFxT
MK9
KOF13
SC5.

I think MK is getting overstated. As much as I “like” MK, you have to make room for new games and MK9 has had so many patches it is a freaking nightmare to keep up with among other things…

SFAE 2012 has never been there…it will be
UMVC3 has never been there…it will be
SFXTekken has never been there…it will be

That leaves probably 2 spots open unless EVO decides to go 3 days or really ramps things up because 6 games is rough at any tournament…

I don’t have anything against Skullgirls but seriously, if MK took THIS LONG to get to EVO, why do people think a downloadable game that has virtually no scene compared to other games should get a nod? That doesn’t even make any sense. It should be there is some form, no question, but as an official tournament?

If there were two other games to pick, Soul Calibur 5 should get in because, it has never been there, will have numbers, and is new…Soul Calibur doesn’t jump the gun on everything, though…KOF deserves the 5 spot. Why? It has never been there before. 5 brand new games basically would be a first for EVO…if there had to be a 6th, MK should be there but KOF is a better choice and this is coming from someone with a Jax avatar. =)

Heck, If people were playing Tekken Hybrid TTT in HD would be a good one but no one really talks about it…TTT was a HUGE game at one time…

and just as an FYI, almost EVERY scene for EVERY game increases every year on new 1-3 year old games, so it’s hard to justify that as an explanation because EVo would have 29382893 games and the staff would be running tournaments 24-7 for three straight days.

You can chill and back off, Renegade. I was’t making this something to get defensive over, so I’d prefer if you didn’t try to. DreamTR’s post is actually pretty thought out though, so I’ll give him props on that.

This is spot on, skullgirls wont be in evo, anime games never have done well ( melryblood was a joke ) bb only got in because it basically got grandfathered by the gg community ( and basically none of the gg players play it anymore ) mk9 may not get a spot because the scene is stagnant because the patch after patch. UMVC3 SSF4AE2012 and SFXTEK are all a given, Sc5 is a large possibility and kof 13 has an uprising scene that has a shot if it keeps going strong. I dont see how Bb has a chance tbh, especially with skullgirls taking its spotlight.

WHat is all this talk of Game choices for evo? All I want is entrance themes for the Top 8’s of all tournaments. ANd some pyro would be nice O.o

Evo 2012 needs more HYPE

For Daigo theme?

But yeah, they could do top 8’s, or Top 4’s even for a lot of tournaments.

Edit: Also, I only inserted that thing to try and be funny, I’m not trying to spam or go off topic or anything.

LMAOOOOOOOOOOO

Announcer: APPROACHING THE STAGE, THE WORLD’S STRONGEST BEAST, DAAAIGOOO UMEHARAAA!!!

The big 3 from Capcom are in. now the other two that SHOULD be in, are KoFXIII and SC5. However we’ll have to wait and see. One way to gauge this is the numbers at the majors previous to EVO. One main reason why I say KoF over MK is because;

 • what is going down at Final Round in two months. I mean all of Mexico’s big hitters are going for the KoFXIII tournament as well as some of the players that just got sponsored for KoFXIII alone. Isnt Elive sending the two best KoFers from China they just signed to FR???

 • Dream Cancel vs Power up @ Power up 2012. 5 vs 5 is one of the main events at the major next year. I might be on the team (if Osirun lets me) but still it will be great to see this kind of event in the spot light. There is a MK event planned too, but I cant wait to see the KoF event.

 • Dont know what CEO, ECT5 or UFGT8 is doing for KoFXIII tournies but their input can be the deciding factor if KoFXIII, SC5, MK or Extend get a nod at EVO.

Please let Skullgirls be in the lineup.

It’s been at WNF and many, many majors. Everyone has seen and has a really good idea of the game and it’s designed for tournaments from gameplay to features such as push button button config, holding start for 15 frames to pause to prevent accidental pausing, stages won’t mess with color blind people, etc.

And none of the stuff matters if the numbers don’t add up, instead of begging have faith in the game and see how it performs at the lead up majors, because that’s going to be the defining factor.

The game’s not even had a definitive release date on it. I get some hype about it being set to be super balanced, but from the most recent tournament footage of it I saw, it seemed well…slow and kind of boring. Plus, for some reason a bunch of people from different scenes decided to get on it when I personally don’t think it’s anything more than an ‘okay’ game from how it looks and stuff. Not to mention it’s like sucking people from other scenes and stuff for no real reason too. I highly doubt Skullgirls would ever realistically be in the lineup. On top of what I said, it’s also like…way too cultish in the general scene of things to be main stage.

The lineup is being announced Tuesday

Hardly an issue since any of the unreleased game people are expecting could be delayed.

I’m not trying to be a douche about it, Mr.X. I was simply trying to post my personal opinions on the game without burying it.

I didn’t view your post that way.

Mortal Kombat

Just because a game is designed for tournaments doesn’t mean that people will play it in tournaments.

…has always been a very successful and popular fighting game series, with big sales numbers. Even shitty MK vs DC was able to sell 1.8 million copies. I fail to see why putting a game of the series is a gamble if the developers express the intention to make it EVO worthy. Skullgirls has hype from some guys in the FGC but at the end of the day it’s a new series from a new brand without a fraction of the clout the MK brand has and there’s no guarantee enough people will play it. To me it would be rather surprising if that game makes it to EVO2011, considering the “we’re not here to build your community and make your game popular” message Mr Wizard wants to send out.

The fuck does any of that actually have to do with it being a tournament viable game and putting it in EVO wihtout it even having time to get a scene not a slap in the face to damn near every game? I’m a big fan by the way if you wanna pull that hate MK shit.

I thought EVO wasn’t supposed to be building scenes.

I wonder why a game getting alot of hype from the FGC should get a chance at EVO despite not being out yet when a game that was getting alot of hate from the FGC got into EVO. Wiz says alot of stuff that bullshit and you know it. And if he truly believed that eh would never have put MK in EVO last year. Time to move on my ass.
