This is a pretty fucking good problem to have, isn’t it? I wonder what’s better: 1) A longer event with more games, but that fewer people will be able to attend (because of time constraintss), or 2) Keep things the way they are but some games kind of get the shaft. It would be really interesting to see a breakdown of how many attendees could attend if Evo was stretched out to like 4, 5, even 6 (!!) days respectively. The Evo guys must have all attendees emails cause they sent us out the codes. Fuck it man, get the data, then decide.
why fix something that is not broken
exactly.
And I’m sure like 90% of the people posting have never even been to EVO or this was their first evo.
This. ^
So tired of people wanting evo to change for the sake of their spectator sport.
Evo is fine the way it is for the most part, sure it could pick up one more game, but the thought of becoming a 4 day event is just ridiculous. So many people would get shafted on the scheduling part.
If tournaments for all these games really mattered to you(especially poverty games), then side tournies exist for a reason. 9 official tournaments is ridiculous.
Why is there always so much simmering anger in these forums? It’d be great to see some of the less popular games get some exposure but I just don’t see how they’d have the time for it. Is extending the event to 4 days really as simple as people think it is?

If their asking our opinion about whether or not they should switch to four days, then it is possible. Whether it should happen or not though is the question.
You know, personally I don’t think it’s realistic to hope for Skullgirls or Arcana Heart 3 to make it in over Blazblue or for KOF13 (as much as I’ve liked the KOF series) to get in over SFxT. My personal guess is that it’d be SSFIVAE, UMvC3, BBCSX, SFxT, MK9, and SCV.
I wouldn’t exactly Evo BB a “world tournament”. To me, BB at Evo was more like a North America National tournament with very few international players (tho I’d be curious to see how many were actually there)
I agree with all your other points tho.
Please. No one is getting “shafted on the scheduling part” since many people arrive in Vegas a few days or sometimes a week early every year anyways. Whoever wants to be at Evo finds a way to not only go but usually make an extended vacation out of it. From a scheduling point of view + demand of additional games, I see no reason why Evo can’t be more than 3 days. Especially since they seem to want to limit the actual playing portion to 2 days by not allowing side games and demos to be played throughout Sunday. Not everyone wants to watch the finals for games they don’t give a shit about. I’m not even going deep into the issue of the many games that are (and will be soon) available for the current gen hardware with good player support that Evo does not include in the lineup for whatever reason. I’m not buying that 4-5 games are good enough for an official lineup. Things could and should be better for what they are charging per player.
Of course, the money portion is a different story but the way this event is growing every year by attendance numbers + the ever growing entry fees, is booking an additional day for the ballroom really that big of an issue anymore? At least one more day for the hotel room bookings has to count for something as well. There is money to be made that I’m sure the players are more than willing to spend.
Wrong.
Me, and the rest of the people who are already having issues in the first place who are blowing it up on twitter disagree.
You typed that as if I don’t even attend Evo. A lot of people who even competed(tons of people in the brackets I judged, wtf) in games didn’t fly in until THE day they were competing(mainly international, but some U.S. players too)
Speak for yourself, that is all.
Don’t even get on that trip Stu. I’ve been trying to make since 03. Even then it would be incredibly dumb for evo to lose the BYOC space to shit that isn’t gaming. I’d go to Evo just for the BYOC because to me that’s always been more legendary than anything else. Really though, not every game needs to be in the mainstage and there are a chunk of people that go to EVO just for the BYOC because they get to play the games that they can’t in their local scenes.
People need to spend less time worrying about the EVO main stage and more time finding the people that play the games they like and making meet ups at EVO so they can run tournaments at the BYOC area. Here’s an idea and you have a year to figure out how to pull it off: All the people that want tournaments at Evo for smaller games, get your community together about getting set ups there (depending on what Evo provide for you this shit might change) and once you have shit Ironed out, ask Mr. Wizard or the Cannons if there would be a way to register for side tournaments at no additional charge so you guys can have brackets set up in advanced. That way VF, Melty Blood, AH3, TMNT: TF and all other mofos can have their official annual meet up at EVO but it won’t be a bitch fight about fighting for stream time. Real talk though, if you’re game is played by like 50 people in the U.S. still, don’t be asking to be put in the main stage. Although if there were a way to fit in the finals for all the smaller tournaments on the last day on stream for people to see, it would greatly increase the exposure those games get.
You should take you own advice. I don’t need make assumptions on this. Instead, I know plenty of people from out of town that were in Vegas for at least 5 days during the week of Evo, if not longer. If you don’t believe me, ask around to see how many non-Vegas locals were at Insert Coins and Gemini Arcade Palace the week of Evo because they wanted to be here longer. If you can’t schedule for more than just the 3 “official” days of Evo, that’s your problem, not the event’s issue. Plan for yourself better next time. I stand by my comments.
There’s another option that hasn’t been talked about.
Who says EVO has to be the national tournament for those games?
Final Round would be a good choice for non-EVO games nationals
a) Shinblanka loves SNK and poverty
b) It’s a damn good tournament
c) It’s opposite of Evo timewise and locationwise
If the non-major scenes are viable enough, forge your own kingdom.
that said, I’d prefer to have one real national tournament along the lines of an SBO. That benefits the community. However, 3 days is not enough to have a national tournament for all worthy games, especially when Capcom’s shooting themselves in the foot while other companies are doing well.
If Evo’s going to be a Capcom/Namco event, then quite simply, it’s time for the rest of the community to accept that decision and start working on things themselves.
Because that’s what EVO wants to be, in general, for fighting games.
It also gets more exposure than anything else.
I’m not saying not to support other great events too, but also push for presence @ EVO.
Yeah I agree, it’s preferable to be at EVO, but if they’re not going to take you no matter what, you might as well go it alone.
That said, it’s wait and see what games are at EVO- I’d love to see a preliminary list in Feburary before Final Round so I can pick my tourney for the year. It’s tough right now with the game I want most not coming out until summer, and my 2nd pick uncertain for EVO. Beyond those two, there’s nothing I really give a shit about right now.
I want Evo to be 4 days. What Benie said earlier in the thread was spot on
I don’t quite understand all the complains about EVO being a Capcom event… you guys do realize that it has always been a Capcom event, do you? The whole EVO started as B3 in 1996 with just SFA2, B4 in 2000 had ST, SFA2, SFA3, 3S and MvC2. This site name itself already should have told you guys that this is a place for Ryu and Ken fanboys. Mr Wizard has tried to give other non-Capcom fighting games as much time to shine as possible and deserves praises for that, but why does he has the obligation to spend much time and money on games that no one wants to play? He’s doing so as a big favour to the fans of those non-Capcom, non-Namco gamers, not as some obligation. There’s a limit to the amount in the pie that he can give out to fighting game fans, adding poorly attended games will just weaken EVO and waste resources rather than strengthening it. Those fans of games that nobody plays need to do their work and make their community strong enough to justify their place in EVO.
You would think people would realize this. But they’re too blinded by their own fanboyism.
If KOFXIII doesn’t show up at EVO, I’ll still watch it. I’ll be disappointed as fuck, but I’ll still watch it.
If KOFXIII does show up, I’ll fucking be there to get my ass cut. Guaranteed. I’ll fucking quit my job if they won’t give me that weekend off.
I just want EVO to be 4 days cause it’s fun. I dont actually care of they add new games on the 4th day… although i definitely wont complain about them if they do.
