EVO 2012 Lineup Speculation

EVO 2011 ended yesterday. But now, with the anouncement of many new fighting games (and versions), it’s gonna be hard for us to speculate and for EVO Organization Team to decide the EVO 2012 lineup.

Until the three days of the 2012 World Finals, we’ll have in consoles:
-Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike - ONLINE EDITION (August/2011) - PS3/360
-Skullgirls (Winter) - PS3/360
-The King Of Fighters XIII (October) - PS3/360
-Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (November) - PS3/360
-Super Street Fighter IV: AE Rebalance (until the end of this year) - PS3/360 (is PC included in this patch?)
-Street Fighter X Tekken (2012) - PS3/360
-Soul Calibur 5 (2012) - PS3/360
-Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (2012) - PS3/360 (even it’s not officially anounced for consoles, demo of the game in PS3 Tekken Hybrid is the hint)

In my opinion, I hope the EVO 2012 lineup can be:
-Super Street Fighter IV AE Rebalanced
**-Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 **
-SF3: 3rd Strike OE
-Skullgirls
-Tekken 6 (or Tag Tournament 2, if released until EVO 2012)
-The King Of Fighters XIII

And you, what games you think to be in main lineup in EVO 2012?

SSFIV2012
UMvC3
SkullGirls
KOF
TTT2
3S exibition in there too.

3S is not coming back to the main lineup…so put that out of there.

MK had 500 entrants. It’s coming back haters.

Yet another disc update of SSF4AE
UMVC3
TTT2
BBCS2
MK9
Street Fighter X Tekken

LOL at skullgirls. Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat, or even 3rd Strike would have a better shot at the lineup than skullgirls. Honestly 3rd Strike is not coming back, I almost fell asleep during the exhibition. They might’ve had a chance if they did some rebalancing but no one wants to see Chun/Yun/Ken again taking over and the “HD upgrade” wasn’t that noticeable. The amount of hype in the room just died after the first couple of matches of the 3rd Strike Exhibition when everyone realized how little they cared.

Also you might wanna fix your first list of games out on consoles. I wasn’t aware that Street Fighter x Tekken would be out before Evo 2012 and even if it was, it would’ve definitely made the lineup.

I can only just pray that Tekken 6 never comes back again.

SF x Tekken slated for quarter 1 2012 release, meaning jan-march 2012.

Guaranteed spots:
-SF x Tekken (capcom)
-UMvC3
-Tekken Tag 2 (namco)
-KOF XIII (Atlus)

All the games above will be new games released by a company that sponsored Evo. Capcom, Namco and Atlus all supported Evo, so it’s natural that their games will get dibs for Evo spots.

I’m fine with this, and I am definitely in favor of KOF XIII making it there. First, it’s a great game. 2nd, Haunts and IplayWinner.com are streaming KOF XIII tourneys to promote the game in California, and the Mexican KOF scene has a ton of great players. So just adding KOF to bring a big Mexican fighting game scene into the Evo family is worth it.

So 1 spot left…
candidates: AE rebalanced, skullgirls, MK9, Blazblue

I think AE rebalanced is the favorite because it has the biggest player base. Blazblue top 8 was super hype, skullgirls shows a lot of promise and MK9 was a huge success, but I think attendance for these games at next year’s tourneys will decide which game gets the final spot.

I could see Evo adding a 6th spot for a main game… since the number of Evo attendants keep increasing it’s possible that Evo staff will be happy to accomodate a 6th game.

Lets stick with what games will be there first of all

SSF4 whatever version
mvc3 whatever version
tekken 6

now that we got the B and B out the way the possibles in rank of greatest to least is
kof13
mk9

If SC5, SFxT, Teken tag2 comes out then im assuming evo WILL have to extend how many games are avaliable
The best thing bout evo is that they allow fighting games at least 1 year to be on the schedule of evo

If Tekken Tag 2 comes out then it will automatically replace Tekken 6. No need to extend game slots in that situation. I have serious doubts whether Tekken 6 will be back even if TTT2 doesn’t release before then. The hype just committed suicide during Tekken 6 finals.

3rd strike is done. A new port doesn’t mean it’ll make it back into the lineup, because it’s still the same game.

MK9 has a much higher chance of making it back into Evo than KOF13 does. This isn’t to knock KOF13, I personally feel that it’s a very fun game, but traditionally there just isn’t a large enough scene in the US to justify its inclusion. MK9 had an awesome showing and the community will probably grow over the next year with continued support from NRS.

Threads like this used to get locked on sight before like April or May.

I don’t mind Theory Evo. I think it’s fun for fans. Like me.

I’m interested in how you guys are making your dream lists, though.

  • Are you naming the games that you think will get the biggest attendance?
  • Are you naming the games that you think will have the largest active playerbases at that time?
  • Are you choosing any games based on which have the hardest-working players?
  • Are you choosing any games based on which have the hardest-working organizers?
  • Are you predicting which games will make the most appearances at the year’s regionals and majors?
  • Are you predicting which games will pull the largest numbers at locals all over the country? All over the world?
  • Does it matter to you whether or not foreign players will travel to your dream tournament for these games?
  • Do you take realistic hardware and organizational factors into account?
  • Do you take possible sponsorship into account?
  • Do you take potential viewership into account?
  • Are you picking the games that you personally enjoy playing the most?
  • Are you picking the games that you believe others enjoy playing the most?
  • Are you selecting games that you objectively believe are the most interesting competitively? To spectators? To their players?
  • Are you naming any games specifically because they’re new, or specifically because they’re old?
  • If you named any old(er) games, have you selected any of them just because they’ve been at Evo before? Or mainly because they haven’t been there in a while? Or simply because they have not ever been included before?

(I think history has demonstrated that the Evo staff take all of these factors into consideration.)

-AE Rebalanced
-UMvC3
-SFxT
I am 100% sure those will be there, now here are other ones that maybe will get a chance in my opinion

-Soul Calibur 5(it better get a fucking chance!)
-Skullgirls
-KOF XIII

I just don’t see MK a second year in a row since there are SO MANY new games coming out, the only way it stands a chance imo is if they do what capcom does and release a new version of MK

No Tekken since its old, and no TTT2 since I don’t think it will be out by evo

I don’t think we will see 3S OE either because the game will be almost a year old already by evo 2k12

If we’re talking about a game being SHOEHORNED into Evo, it’s freakin’ Tekken. No disrespect, but OMG that shit is boring to watch. It drains all the energy from the entire room, and the new Tag Tournament doesn’t look any better.

And let’s cool it with the 3rd Strike hate. It may not have been complete hype, but there were a heck of a lot more cheers during the 3S exhibition than the TT2 exhibition. The potential is definitely there, anyone would love the chance to have their own “beast unleashed” moment.

It’s probably near impossible, but i really wanna see ST included again in the official line-up.

MK9 is getting constant support from Netherrealm, and by the time of Evo next year, the current DLC characters are Freddy will have been checked out and allowed, so it’ll be just like a new version of the game will have been released. The finals were the most diverse finals at Evo, and one of the most hype, so I really can’t see MK9 not being there next year.

While its maybe not the most realistic option due to time and size constraints, Evo should increase its game count to at least the 6 it had last year to accomodate for all the new games that really deserve a shot, combined with older games that are steadily revitalizing their scene. 8 would probably be best, but, again, such a thing is probably only possible in a perfect world.

Anyway, going off that, what will probably happen is, in order (i.e. 6 to 8 will only happen if they have that many slots):
-Street Fighter 4
-Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
-Street Fighter x Tekken

These three are guaranteed, given that Shoryuken is the brains behind Evo. Street Fighter’s getting a rebalance, Marvel is Marvel, and SFxT is apparently the best thing since sliced bread, so I’m happy with these.

-Mortal Kombat 9

As I said above, its basically getting a new version if you assume time stops in between this year’s Evo and next year’s. Its exciting, its popular, all the pros are behind it, I really hope it sticks around and Netherrealm continue to give it the support it deserves.

-BlazBlue

Its pretty well balanced and seemed overall hype, even though not as many people play it and its early time slot on Sunday, though that may just be because people love seeing a low tier win regardless of whether or not they know what’s happening. Its also pulling a community by itself (dustloop, that is to say), and that’s an upside by itself, really.

-Skullgirls

If its out by then and MikeZ hasn’t been high the entire time he’s been designing the game, I can’t really see it not getting a spot. MikeZ is a really popular player in the community, and this is the first fighting game that’s been designed and done entirely by a fighting game pro, so, even though its not out yet, I feel pretty assured it’ll be exciting and balanced.

-Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (if its not out, Soul Calibur 5):

The main reason this is down so low is its unlikely it’ll actually be on consoles before Evo, but if Namco does get it out on consoles around the same time as arcades, then it should be a lock. Tekken is popular, Namco wants it at Evo, but…people don’t want Bobben 6: Bobline Bobvolution, and that really caused the hype to drop around Tekken finals. TTT2 looks to be more enticing of a pick, as, even if Bob is once again god tier, you can only have one Bob on your team. Soul Calibur, however, has been at Evo before, but only in the absence of a Tekken, and that was due to T6 being out in arcades but not consoles, and no one wanting to go back to Tekken 5. I’m sure it’ll be given a chance to prevent Bob single-handedly consuming hype and support the 3D community in the absence of TTT2, however.

-King of Fighters XIII

This being the lowest on the list should really show you why 8 slots would be so beneficial to Evo (or even maybe 9 if TTT2 is out and people want SC5 still). Its balanced (despite what some really…odd glitches might imply about the game), diverse (by necessity of the 3 man team system) and popular. It, as with all of the games besides the overlap in Capcom games, wields its own community, and as such would, once again, promote Evo being a fighting game convention, which is the image they really want.

I’d really like some older games like Third Strike, Super Turbo or VampSav being given a chance again (or for the first time, in the case of VampSav), but, even with 3SO, I doubt they’ll be able to draw a large enough crowd to necessitate them knocking one of these ones out. Its a real shame, especially for ST, which many see as the quintessential fighting game, but what can you do? The only way to fit more games after a certain limit would be to change to an SBO style system, which would ruin the fighting game convention angle, and lower hype quite a bit. Nonetheless, a boom in popularity might happen for God knows what reason before Evo decides its game, so you never know what might happen. Assuming nothing big changes, though, I can’t see the games list being too different from mine (which is pretty much the same as everyone else’s anyway).

I think AE Rebalance, UMVC3 and MK9 (or possibly UMK9?) are almost guaranteed. If Street Fighter X Tekken is released in March 2012, as most sources are saying is planned, I can see that being there. Same goes for Soul Calibur 5 if it gets released as seemingly planned for Jan 2012.

The Tekken situation is a curious one in my opinion. As much as I personally love Tekken 6, there’s no denying that it didn’t do much for it’s reputation at Evo 2K11. Compared to how exciting SSFIV: AE and MK in particular were to watch, T6 was a snooze-fest, especially the Top 8. Although the amount of people who signed up for it was still pretty good. I wouldn’t be so sure that Tekken Tag 2 will come out in time for it to be at the next Evo, can’t count out the idea that it might take forever for it to be released on consoles, like T6. I hope that doesn’t prove to be true however.

One of the reasons why Sunday ran on way longer than it should was because Tekken 6 took too much time. Whoever decided that each tekken match be 3 out of 5 rounds should be shot for putting us through that hell.

Um, Tekken is always 3/5 rounds…

Yeah… and I’m saying that’s the dumbest idea ever. It just makes matches a lot longer than they need to be.

I’m sure glad you know more about a game than its community does, then. Its been like that forever, and it reduces the chances of being randomed out, so its only a good thing. 3/5 is the compromise between increasing the chance of the better player winning (which approaches 100% as the number of rounds approaches infinity) and the time the matches go for (which obviously approaches 0 as the number of rounds approaches 0).
