EVO 2012 lineup AKA what will be the biggest games a year from now?

Being a Japanese import game on an old console with no netplay and little player overlap didn’t stop Melty Blood from getting a good showing at EVO. Hell they even got to bring out two Japanese specialist players to EVO 2010. Although I do understand times have changed. But whatever game gets the spot, the players better show up!

Personally, I want Vanguard Princess Prime to be mainstage. If Under Night: In-birth comes out, maybe that as well. But eh, I’d be mad happy if KOF XIII gets mainstage, gets a great showing, and maintains a consistent scene that just enjoys the game and is willing to get better, if pragmatically. Psst, psst, Vanguard Princess Prime mainstage please.

Just noticed this thread. cross-posting with some edits from an evo thread

I think these are the most likely games at Evo 2k12:
AE (v.2012)
UMVC3
SCV
SFxTK

Wildcards (potentially all 3 of these, 1 or 2 of these. or none of these could make it):
KOF13
Skullgirls
MK9

A few points I want to make about some games:

-UMVC3 has the potential to be more popular than AEv2k12

-T6 I predict won’t be there next year because of boring top 8 this year, SFxTK & SCV coming out next year (I know they’re not really substitutes for a Tekken game, just using them as a factor and nothing else), TTT2 will be coming out this year in arcades, and who will really care about T6 even if TTT2 won’t make it to the states in a year or more?

-However, I fully expect TTT2 to be at Evo whenever it comes to console, and I expect 1000 people to enter. I don’t care for T6, but I’m pretty hyped for TTT2.

-Will MK9’s showing at Evo reverse its trend of dying out? I have my doubts. I predict numbers for MK in tournaments dropping off gradually if not quickly. Only way it survives is if more MK9 players (who’re mostly online warriors if not completely casual), come out in mass to support their game at majors, ranbats etc…

-Since I don’t see T6 coming back, I see BBCS2 coming back next year even less

-KOF13: Doesn’t really have a big scene in US. It has a bad rep of being unbalanced (although, cries of unbalanced/OP characters are always exaggerated IMO, this case is no different). It comes down to 1 thing IMO: online. If the online is BB status say, It’ll do well and likely be at Evo. If the online is ass, sorry SNK/KOF fans. Here’s hoping for good netcode.

-I don’t see 3S coming back personally. Couple things: US ain’t that great at the game, and mostly newcomers will cry or be bored of same top characters usually winning things.

-AH3: time to move on trollface.jpg

If EVO does not have SF2 again, I will not check a single match again - haven’t this year. Still, together with the fact that I live on another country and do not plan on going to EVO due to the very high costs compared to the amount in my bank account and my dislike for most new games and how I seem to be different than the masses that love anything Capcom releases regardless of quality, it is clear that I am not the kind of person who gets SRK/EVO revenue, so I do not matter. The funny thing is I have lots of friends from the ST boards and GGPO that I would love to meet in person, and yet SF4 lovers from around here are the ones willing to spend high sums of money just to say they have been to EVO, even though they are not nearly as interested in the game itself as I am and do not really know anyone from these boards, but some top players of which they are either fanboys or haters (Justin Wong comes to mind, I believe local Daigo lovers see him as some evil person).

If only ST got a proper treatment like 3S is getting with OE. It still wouldn’t be anywhere as big SF4, but it wouldn’t been dropped as quickly as HDR. Personally I don’t care 3S, I’ll only gonna buy it to mess around with the dipswitches to make it play like HF haha

i dont get why people think SCV is a lock? is the scene for it that big?

lol, why dont you see bbcs coming back?, from all the non capcom games i think that is one of the few that has stronger chances of being on evo again, the only thing that can make it not being on evo is that the update dont be released before evo, and that is unlikely
t6 imo wouldnt be on evo in favor of scv, and because the people would be more interested on getting their hands on ttt2
i still think that ssf4ae2 and sfxt could end as mutually exclusive due to similarities on both games

Soul Calibur has historically been a pretty strong “casual” title, Namco is a big company that is getting pretty involved with the competitive community, and if the game is good it’ll probably have a solid hardcore following. With a timely TTT2 release being unlikely, I feel like SCV is pretty much a lock, given that they don’t completely botch the game (which seems entirely possible).

Since the console edition is getting a balance change, I don’t think this will be a problem. I hope T6 comes back again despite the boring top 3 this year.

As much as I hate to say it, 3SOE will not be in simply for being 3rd Strike.

SC “5th Strike” is supposedly being built with competition in mind (and is apparently closer to SC2) so I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t at EVO.

You mean you think EVO will straight up abandon one of the most popular games and give Capcom a huge middle finger, all because the graphics look sort of similar?

So far the description I have been hearing about SFxT is that it’s more like Darkstalkers + 2D Tekken than it is like Street Fighter. Irregardless if 3S and CvS2 can coexist I have a hard time seeing why people will stop playing SF4 with the release of SFxT.

Oh right, I forget it was getting a balance update with the console release.

MK9 made it to the roster this year, I don’t see why SCV can’t either next year considering what Kristoph mentioned. Obviously these are just opinions and speculation… minus AE and UMVC3, I don’t see any game being a lock for next year.

I never understood the “can’t play more than one game” argument. I think it’s obvious they don’t play identical and I hope that “they kind of look a like and some characters are the same” is not mentioned at some point against having both games.

Also “irregardless” is not a word.

my feeling comes more about game variety, we know that sxt and sf4 arent the same game and hopefully dont play alike, but you cant deny that there is still some similarities on both games, i think that i worded kinda bad what i tried to say, i feel that both games try to cater to similar audince, so i wouldnt be surprised that this ends hurting the scene of sf4 and many players prefering sfxt over it

The games at EVO next year will be whatever Mr.Wiz, the Canons, and [S]their corporate masters[/S] want there to be there, don’t make the mistake of thinking that there’s anymore to it than that.

MBAA only got in because we (the people who actually fucking go to events and play the damn game) demanded it and came out in force, it only got added to the poll because Wiz didn’t realize that it was a PS2 game, and japan only at that. EVO staff later admitted they added melty to the poll as a concession to make us shut up about not being given a shot, they thought there was no way in hell we’d ever win.

I wonder why there was no “people’s choice” this year? [S]Illuminati.[/S]

Despite having a better turnout than TvC (and another game I will not mention because no one ever believes this and I’m tired of getting corrected by people who didn’t even go to EVO 2010, or who slept in instead of watching melty on stage.) it got no time on the stream setup during pools (which TvC and game X did), had to go first thing in the fucking morning for finals, and the footage for melty finals has still YET TO BE POSTED. Beyond that the mainstream press largely ignored the fact that melty blood was even at EVO, instead G4 put a random tekken mixup and a fucking giants match as top 10 EVO moments instead of something actually exciting like Garu versus Kusanagi. Both Garu and Chelsea flew out from Japan just to compete in MBAA, while Chelsea is a relatively obscure player and didn’t top 8, Garu was an SBO qualifier and is considered one of the best players in Japan. This would be like if Muteki showed up for HDR or ST and no one mentioned him being there or put him on stream until he won, and then didn’t post his finals matches online afterwards.

So yeah, it’s time to move on from those games that came out a week prior to the lineup announcement, they didn’t pay their way in like the games that weren’t even out when they were announced as EVO games.

And were sure as fuck can’t be assed to figure out what console they came out on either.

Again, it wouldn’t happen. The similarites between SF4 and SFxT is about as close as the similarities betwen 3S and CvS2, and yet those 2 games ran on EVO for years. Neither does both games cater to the same audience, SF4 is the Call of Duty of the fighting games and is (relatively) simple, highly accessible and yet deep at the top level of play. SFxT caters more to the SRK visitors and wouldn’t have as much mainstream appeal.

How do you know that SFxT doesn’t have the mainstream appeal? i assure you this it will have way more mainstream appeal than AE2012. Capcom lost 1.5 million buyers from SFIV to Super, something like SFxT is aimed to get a lot of them back as well as the people who keep buying the revisions. If they can keep the core userbase, get back a significant number of the people lost from the OG SFIV and tap into the massive Tekken casual fanbase who use to like the game back in the days of 3 and Tag this could be big…

Also Soul Calibur V got confirmed for early 2012, no way TTT2 comes out prior to Evo, Namco are not going to release their two big fighting games in the same half of the year. I expect TTT2 Oct/Nov.

That post, hold dat. You really think that SFxT a combination of the two most popular fighting game franchises of the last 15 years isn;t going to get burn internationally? What the fuck do you think this game is? Marvel Vs Capcom? Ignoring that most places worldwide never had access to a SFIV arcade unit in the first place Super never had an arcade release. Lots of top Japanese players played it, godsgarden did online tournaments for it, NSB 17 was a console meetup for Super instead of SFIV @ the arcades. Tekken is crazy popular in Japan and south east asia… and this is still a SF game… Japan isn’t going to treat this like it’s MVC3.

It will have to gain like 300 players from this Evo and have AE2k12 lose 250, not going to happen, SFxT could cause both games to take a hit…

Yeah it would be ridiculous for Evo to give spots to the 2 games that will get the most entrants as well as play completely different, having the same model for 15 characters from SFIV is reason enough to not give them both a spot. Who cares if half the roster is brand new and from another franchise and that they’ll more than likely have 5 SF characters not in SFIV or even that the returning SFIV characters will play completely different. Who cares that this isn’t a 1v1 game and that it’s actually a 2v2 tag game and has Cross Rush, Cross Assault, Switch and other mechanics not even unveiled yet.

takes breath

They used the same Ryu character model, the same character model ffs, don’t give them both slots Evo, it would be ridiculous… do the right thing Mr Wizard.

AE of course will be back.

UMVC3 unfortunately will porbably be part of the main events

SF X TK is a coin flip

Isn’t MK america’s game as well? Will be back on the main event for EVO, which means they will have to make room for the others, which means…MORE EVO DAYS! =)

That is my prediction.

Huh? If anything, Capcom lost 500k buyers because Super sold nearly as much as Vanilla did.
