Conservative/Liberal lining up to mean segregationist/pro-civil-rights is something we think because of presentism. It is a new development, or rather a new way of looking at things.
In the first place, it’s not just that Republicans were liberal and Democrats were more conservative, and they magically must have swapped somehow. To the best of my understanding, the parties are generally more stratified now than used to be- there were conservative wings and liberal wings of each party (not taking into account the other political parties). This sort of thing seems to be discouraged now, with the exception of the Tea Party thing currently going on- people like to look at the parties in black and white terms, no pun intended. People all over still have a wide variety of beliefs, of course- but as a nation I don’t think we really distinguish very much between any two Democrats and two Republicans.
In the second place, liberalism in the main does not equate to egalitarianism- Woodrow Wilson (Democrat) was unquestionably racist: he fired/downgraded all Blacks in the Dept. of Treasury, Post office and segregated the leftovers, and also segregated the Navy etc- though he has a highlight reel of racism which is quite a bit longer. He was, also, a liberal. And, furthermore, he stood up for Jews and was even in favor of women’s rights.
Likewise, these days people don’t mind taking shots at religious conservatives, but evangelical Christians were an important part of the antislavery movement, based on their moral views. This was also a big part of the start of the Republican party. From wiki:
But, TD;LR-
There were a lot of racist pro-segregation Democrats in the South because it was the prevalent stance in there and elsewhere, and it was politically viable. Republicans couldn’t get elected in the South because, after the Civil War, they were associated with Lincoln and the decimation of the region. They became more and more associated with civil rights as it became more viable. Back to Woodrow Wilson, he courted and won the Black vote because he thought it was valuable, and then instituted segregationist policies and let horrible things slide after the fact. He ignored women’s suffrage because it wasn’t important, and then signed on once it looked like a bad idea to be against it.
Like water, many politicians will just go where they can go, when they can get there. We put a lot into labels, these days.
So ignorant ass voters vote against black candidate for white candidate cuz the white candidate sounded[seemed] black?!
These people voted for someone they have never even seen before or have done lil to no research on?!
Well then, they got WTF they asked for. If you don’t know who or WTF you’re votin’ for, just stay the fuck at home. You don’t HAVE to vote.
This the same shit that just happened in Jersey with Christie. People voted against their own damn interests for reasons I’m not sure of.
i had a pretty good laugh at the thread title. i mean, did the words “evil”, “white”, and “republican” need to all be used? not to mention the entire “dupes voters” aspect of the title.
haha, yeah. its a little weird. if someone made a thread of, “Ghetto black democrat steals again”, people would be like, uhhhhh. i mean, white people are free reign to shit on here on srk usually, but damn. lol. i like my white peoples man. i guess its just very descriptive, but a title of, Texas republican tricks black people into voting for him", would have been sensational enough and fine.
dat evil white man shit is kinda racist. lol.
i havent said much on this here. i talked it over with my girl the other day. i mean most of what i had to say is scattered around the thread already anyways. but just to mention, this is a seat on some community college council, not some big fucking deal, and you cannot dupe willfully ignorant citizens into anything.
if anything this is just a funny, small case of how american citizens vote. like a bunch of brainwashed morons. oh youre for gay people in any way shape or form, got my vote. oh you love small business, even though you have no plan, havent said much of shit, and most of your political campaign bashing your opponent has been lies, got my vote. oh your black, got my vote. oh your irish, got my vote. oh you like weed, got my vote. the list goes on forever.
its too scary for people to actually inform themselves and help actually create a better country. i dont think voting is useless. its a great ideal, and what makes democracy work, but when 70 percent of your voting nation are just voting for inane reasons, selfishly for their own come up, and or just not facts in general, what points in it.
no one gave a fuck before, and clearly they (the council of that college) ran the college into shit, and allegedly may have been committing crimes with the funds coming into the school. now its nationwide news because a white man KINDA tricked you into getting his vote by playing on your stupidity and racism. lol wut. gtfo
in a way im glad that this happened. i bet you will pay more attention to your fucking vote next time. i live in houston, so this is kinda funny to me.
Most of what needs to be said here already has been; I agree that this was a shady campaign practice, it’s a good cautionary tale about doing your own investigation and not just going by what political ads tell you, and so on.
However… since the event has already been done? No matter what else happens, I hope one of the next things this fellow does is mail out postcards of the Trollface to every voter in his district.
as far as racist voters goes, black people vote for white candidates plenty (even over black candidates). the reverse isn’t so true.
around the 60’s. before that all southern democrats were pretty much republicans that were still holding a grudge from the reconstruction era (eg “i’d rather vote for a yellow/blue dog than a republican” => yellow/blue dog democrats). most of the blue dogs lost their seats, but there are still a few keepin’ the torch a live in the deep south. they were the ones that refused to fall in line back in 2010 when the dems had the house…most of them lost their seats.
