Evil Ryu Q&A Thread: Ask simple questions here!

EX is overhead, some guy did it to me when I wasn’t aware and was still crouch blocking

Wow that sounds really cool! I have a few more small questions based on this.

Would you guys say ex axe kick is his best ex move?
Does ex axe kick have invincible frames?
Is he at any frame advantage/disadvantage on his axe kicks on block? (all versions)

I’m used to using Sakura’s lk tatsu for pressure since its 0 on block (much like bison’s lk scissors) and I was wondering if I could have a similar pressure style using one of E. Ryu’s axe kicks.

  1. I think ex axe kick is a real good ex move. It gives untechable knockdown, it’s fast as hell, and it can cancel from a long range c.mk.
  2. No it doesn’t have invincible frames because I’ve been dp’d between the cancel from c.mk to ex axe kick.
  3. I’m pretty sure he’s on frame disadvantage on all of them but I could be wrong. They’re pretty hard to punish though.

Hmmm if its a plus on block I might troll someone with that ex axe kick to Ultra 2, been doing that with Yun’s EX shoulder LOL

I couldn’t get the timing down for c.mp after mk axe kick. I could, how ever, get the timing down for c.lp. Does anyone know the difference in damage and whether or not it’s worth it to learn c.mp for this combo? Also, is it possible to link c.lp into s.hp? To create a kind of loop? I was theory fighting about this the other day.

Could you do s.hp xx mk axe kick, c.lp xx hadouken FADC c.lp, s.hp, etc?

The link is pretty easy. After you see Ryu hit the ground with his foot, you plink mp~lp and you’ll get it almost guaranteed. It becomes muscle memory if anything if you keep playing him.

Yes he can link c.lp into s.hp like Akuma can. I’m pretty sure he can’t do c.lp hado but he can do s.hp xx mk axe kick c.mp hado fadc etc for some flashy combos.

Hey Im about to try Ryu a little bit, I played Rufus,Akuma and Balrog before so any of the skills from these characters cross over well? I played E Ryu a little at SFSU and MGL but I was playing him like ryu. Whats his style like ? more Ryu or Akuma?

Neither really. He is pretty unique. If you are good at a close up pressure game, than E Ryu is a good player for you. I think he has top tier potential, but no one can experiemnt with him because the arcades are always serious business.

Well my Mains have always been Rufus and Zero types, Close up in your face stuff. I mean at SFSU theres like no one there sometimes so free trials, I got to play Yang nonstop for 2 hours.

He’s pretty much in your face character, most of his cancellable moves tends to be close or crouching.
cr.mk been slower does limit his zoning/mid range game a bit and far range just the hadou.
Getting in might not be that much of a problem with dive kick and f.mk.
I pretty much play him like an in your face Akuma but more of dive kick pressure instead of fireball pressure.

Call me crazy, but E. Ryu’s seems to play a lot more like Ken rather than Ryu or Akuma.

I see what you mean, but not quite enough IMO. He seems to be a mesh of all 3 except that he isn’t better then any of the 3 where they excel. He’ll probably end up playing more like Ken and Ryu since he lacks air fireball and demon flip. You hardly see Akuma players play footsie and that’s where Evil Ryu will have to spend most of his time unfortunately.

At least he builds meter fast(according to Air). So he should be able to do safe DP’s soon or try to land EX axe kick for untechable knockdowns. Evil Ryu’s dive kick looks more Seth-like rather then Akuma-like(since the height restriction is lower) so I think that will be a good way to mix up and apply pressure on your opponents wake up.

I’m maining E.Ryu once AE is out on console, so I may as well ask now, to see if anyone knows…
I’m intrigued by his f.MK
Does anyone know if it’s grab invincible? In older games (Third Strike, for example), hop moves were grab invincible, but in SFIV, they’re a mixed bag (Vega’s is grab invincible while Cody’s isn’t), so I’m wondering if Evil Ryu’s is or not. I’m curious.

I plan on maining Evil Ryu in AE (I’m bored to tears with Vega). I was wondering, what combos/links can I practice with O. Ryu (or possibly even Akuma) that I’ll be able to carry over when I start using Evil Ryu?

Would be good to train to hit confirm combos and identify if the opponent is standing or crouching.

You can do this in Training Mode as Akuma vs the CPU and just spar normally. Use jab jab to hit confirm, and also determine whether they are standing or crouching. If standing go into cr.MP xx LK Tatsu > HP SRK. If they are crouching just do a HP SRK after the 2 jabs for the knock down. That might not be the combo you end up using with him but being able to hit confirm AND recognise if they are standing or crouching is a good skill to learn.

Quick ones:

Does stomp force stand? If not, is it possible to link cl.hp afterwards?

Stomp can only be comboed off of cl.hp? Or also from other normals?

It doesn’t force stand.

I think… that MK Axe Kick is only +4 on hit and cl.HP appears to be 5 or 6 frames.

I also think that cr.MP is +7 on hit and that cr.MK is 7 frames. But sweep is 8.

Someone please test this! Juri and Rose are considered airborne on their cl. mk. Its great against grapplers. But Juri and Rose can hitconfirm off of it. I’m guessing E. Ryu can’t unless its a counter hit?

When you go for cross up tatsu and your opponent tries to jump away or reversal you with a DP, you’ll hit them while there airborne and put them in the floaty state instead of knocking them away nearly full screen. So my question is, Can Evil Ryu land either of his Ultras in this situation?

It would be a great opportunity to capitalize on and a mind game to make your opponent be afraid to go for a reversal on wake up.

@Rice_Eater: That would be AWESOME. We at least know O.Ryu can Super off a cross-up Tatsu… This should be tested!
