Evil Ryu Q&A Thread: Ask simple questions here!

Rice_Eater/Annihilationscape: It’s been tested. A little over two months ago. Please read the first post of the Evil Ryu General Discussion thread.

otori: Your stomp combo-ability question can also be answered by the post mentioned above.

Mr. Flowers: There is definitely a window where Evil Ryu is airborne. Personally, I’ve done it point blank to a Hakan that did Ultra 1 on wake up, and my hop kick beat him.

Just read it, and I’m very pleased with the answer. This will help a lot with his knockdown game when he has Ultra.

How fast is E. Ryu’s walk speed?

According to Air, it’s the same as Ryu’s. But from the videos I can swear that he seems to moves backwards much faster than Ryu…could be wrong though.

Evil Ryu’s walk speed is faster than Ryu’s. IMO the difference should be very apparent, where I could go as far as to say, you should notice it by the end of the first round you’ve ever played as Evil Ryu.

Now, what confuses me is how Air, a decent Ryu player to say the least, could miss this.

This is very good for me. The one thing I’ve always hated about Ryu is how damn slow he seems to move (or maybe it’s just that I’ve been spoiled by Vega’s excellent walk speed). Regardless, the faster walk speed is great.

Yeah I don’t know what was going through Air’s mind…he was dead wrong on a lot of stuff, but saying LK stomp was safe when according to the forums it’s -7 (!!!) on block really blows my mind.

I was thinking of exclusively playing either Ryu or Akuma until AE arrives, in order to ready myself for Evil Ryu. I’ve never really played a shoto, so I don’t wanna just start out cold with E. Ryu. My question is, which character do you think it would be more beneficial for me to practice? I’m kind of leaning more towards Akuma because he has the same health/stun as E. Ryu, but I’m not entirely sure. Any advice on this is appreciated.

Akuma, for sure. I say this mainly so you can get used to having such low stun/health. Plus Evil Ryu has a decent portion of combos and normals which are taken straight off Akuma.

That said, I’ve been switching between Ryu and Akuma, but I have over a year of Ryu and 6 or so months of Akuma under my belt, so… yeah.

I’ve started fiddling around with Akuma online, and I definitely like him alot more than O. Ryu anyway. Faster walkspeed is a huge plus. Though I’m playing without using demon flips, air fireballs or Akuma’s standing roundhouse, as I’m trying to play him as closely to Evil Ryu as possible. It’s all good though, because I’m not trying to win at all, just learn as much as possible.

I’m gonna be honest practicing 1 character isn’t enough. You need to practice, Akuma and Seth.
Akuma for combo wise and Seth for his dive kick pressure air to ground options and a bit on air to air option.

Interesting advice. I’ll give Seth a go too. Thanks!

E:RYU i think hes more for zoning just like o.ryu but still he looks great for aggresiive gameplay. i think hes a good mix up character

@ DTC: Well, Akuma actually DOES have a dive kick, but it kinda sucks. I guess I can see using Seth for dive kick practice, but aside from low health/stun I’m not sure what else will translate over. I’m speaking in terms of normals, specials, etc. That’s just me though, I’m basically still a noob anyway so what do I know

Seth dive Kick has timing is much closer to Evil Ryu, so you can practice on when to initiate for different pressure options.
cr.lp to cl.hp timing similar but not exact.
j.mp air to air is quite similar

Good info, thanks.

i main akuma and have been playing evil ryu for a while, and i think it’s almost exactly like akuma’s demon flip kick. if you wanna practice, do this combo with akuma:

command dive kick (try to aim it right above the dummy’s head, just enough that you won’t whiff), cr jab, st fierce, lk tatsu, shoryu

the dive kick to cr jab link is probably the toughest part of the combo but once you get it down, you’ll be ready to do evil ryu combos. it’s even easier as evil ryu because you don’t even have to hitconfirm anything, you just cancel your fierce to axe kick.

It’s been said that Evil Ryu’s dive kick doesn’t need to be done at the peak of his jump like Akuma, so I’d imagine that alone would make it easier to hit confirm into a nice combo.

In my opinion, execution is the least important aspect, specially since every shoto has brain dead execution, with the exception of maybe Ryu who has a pletora of 1 frame links into sweeps and you can even get fancy and do stuff like solar plexus, cr.mp, cr.mp, sweep. From the reports E. Ryu follows the shoto rule of having easy 2-frames links for the most part, so basically in two days of training mode you can get top notch execution with E. Ryu…the only possible problem might be comboing sweep after tatsu (yes I know it doesn’t work on everyone) and since his sweep is so god damn slow I’m not sure Akuma’s experience carries over. Also, the hcb motions can take a bit of time getting used to, specially from a standing normal (like Dudley s.hk, EX MGB, Dhalsim’s b.mk, flame, etc).

So I say you should focus more on general gameplay and pick a character that you think plays similar to E. Ryu. I know for a fact that Seth and Akuma are completely different from him in terms of playstyle, and while his overall gameplan is still up for debate, I’d say you’d better off sticking to original Ryu (for an Air like E. Ryu, kinda focused on zoning) or Ken (more offensive, can work on stuff like kara throws, tick throws, etc).

ok im lost wtf does DS mean in the combo thread im guessing its axe kick…? if it is i feel stupid but i have to know i havent been keeping up with evil ryu’s section at all
