Essential Freeware Thread

don’t worry, my comp didn’t blow up or get messed around. it’s just temp files !

haha, ran it anyway :S

I’ve been using Spyware Terminator as of late, running passively, stacked with the occasional scan from Search & Destroy. Nothing like killing anything that tries to get through.

Standard disclaimer for this sort of software.

I put everything relevant in the first page. http://forums.shoryuken.com/showpost.php?p=3381896&postcount=1
I can’t attest to any of the following, but they might be worth a look. http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm#9a>

By the end of the year I want my home PC to only have a command prompt and that’s it. I’m pretty sure I can do everything I need/want to do without having to touch a GUI. Or at least as little as possible.

Ardour - Digital Audio Workstation software
Rosegarden - Another D.A.W. for Linux
Synthedit - Synthesizer creation software

Tweakbench - Not an application, but rather VST Synth plugins to use in making music. Awesome synths, some of them even based on NES system sounds. Check out Monomate and Padawan. Awesome. Also Maelcum and Mashup can produce some awesome delay effects.

Just tried Faststone Image Viewer… better than Irfanview, Xnview and anything else.

There’s also Faststone MaxView, the very minimal image viewer with no bells and whistles but is lightning fast.

For music Foobar2000> Winamp.

I’m looking for good file recovery programs. RecoverMyFiles seems to be ok, but it isn’t free.

Good thread.

[LEFT]Infrarecorder is a good burning app, handles isos and any other type of file.

Gparted live CD is an awesome free partitioning tool. It can run from your CD drive on boot up, it doesn’t even need an OS, so if you want to resize partitions, make new ones etc. for free, then this is the program for you.

I’d recommend utorrent as the best BT client for windows.

And I have to recommend the ultimate in free software: Ubuntu. I run a dual-boot of XP and gutsy gibbon, and I HARDLY ever boot into windows. Comes with all the apps you could want, and they are all free. Worth a try using the live cd, it doesn’t install anything onto your HD so can have a try.

So I got a outdated computer and I tried some of these.

-GLOM is great for videos. Plays them smoothly for outdated computers [in my case].
-Foobar is great for music. Uses 1/2 the CPU that WMP did [tried Winamp but came out the same as WMP for me].

That’s all I can vouch for so far. Oh, I tried using Spyware Doctor. It seemed to get the job done. Pretty good so far.

Edit: Foobar is too fuggin’ good. Minimizing it while playing showed only 0-2% CPU usage. When I minimize WMP it still had 50%. :wasted:

Bottom Line: GET FOOBAR if your computer sucks.

^BTW, Recuva rapes RecoverMyFiles/GetData and it’s free… searches thru HD in like 10 seconds when other programs would take hours.

-EDIT-

Bulk Rename is an invaluable tool. Rename whole folders (or even most of your whole HD if you wanted to go that far), rename extensions, rename the file without changing extensions, order all your files by number/letter, etc., etc all in seconds.

Bump

For those that might have run into something new…or need some of these.

AVG is coo’.

AVG wants you to update to their new bloggy version, since support for the great 7.5 version will be long gone. Time to start looking for a new app soon.

Btw, yes I know I recommended GomPlayer… but it sucks now. Startup is slow, semi-adware and shaky support for some files (frame skips during subtitles, for one). SMPlayer is THE king. Built-in codecs, like Gom, plenty of options, great interface, fast, issues I had with Gom are not present… just the better player out.

Dosbox: A multi-platform DOS emulator. Nifty tool for Windows ME and up for playing those old DOS games you miss.

EDIT: reading upwards, if we’re posting *NIX freeware too.

LMMS: A decent music composer/beatmaking program for Linux. Runs very much like Fruity Loops.

does CCcleaner do the same thing as cleanup?

I haven’t been able to get LMMS to run yet, which disappoints me.

SMPlayer is the only video player I can find that formats subtitles as well as Media Player Classic without the MPC interface that I hate, so that’s good for something. And it’s funny that I got GOM on Geo’s recommendation and because of the built-in codecs, and then TONIGHT found SMPlayer that does exactly the same thing without the formatting issues and stuff.

It’s funny this thread got bumped because I’m getting ready to make MASSIVE updates to the list I posted on the first page.

I’m actually using AVG spyware and Antivir antivirus…funny I’m not using AVG for what it’s best known for.

I’ve found a lot of really cool stuff I’ll have to update y’all on.

TrakAx is an all-in-one multimedia mixing program that’s better than Windows Movie Maker just in the fact that it has DirectX Plugin support. Oh, and producers, be sure to download their samples…some pretty good ones are in there.

^ LOL… yeah I had to bump the thread after finding SMPlayer. It’s flawless. I got tired of frame skips because of the way Gom and MPC handled subtitles. SM is the best of both worlds, MPCs speed and features with Gom’s built-in codecs idea.

KCEasy is a solid file sharing app. It connects to 4 networks (Ares, Gnutella, Fasttrack and OpenFT) at once. Good if you want those song downloads like back in the day.

TrakAx seems pretty dope. I’m gonna have to look into it.

My only issue with SMPlayer is the navbar is kind of glitchy…maybe that’s just default skin, though? and actually, since SMPlayer is just a GUI for MPlayer, I’m gonna try out some others (like rulesPlayer) and see if they make a difference.

I looked along the thread and thought I recommend this defragger. JKDefrag ( http://www.kessels.com/Downloads/ ) I’ve seen other programs that can defragment your system while your system is going but the good thing about this app you can set it to defrag as a screen saver instead of always using up your resources when you might need them.

And while I’m at it I found this website gives tons of freeware apps and this page gives a bunch of really good windows and paid alternatives. http://www.freewaregenius.com/2007/10/29/reinstall-windows-and-outfit-your-system-with-all-freeware-programs/

Thank you everyone. This page thus far has been added to the first post.
