Essential Freeware Thread

Tested a handful of video players recently (again) on 3 files; 2 ‘broken’ wmv videos, and a mkv with subtitles.

Zoom Player was the only one that played all with zero flaws.

I do hate a few things, though. If you want the most features, you have to pay for the premium versions. I hate how the context menu within the program is pretty worthless (I had to google just to find out how to take a frame capture). And it doesn’t have codecs built in and installs them all seperately and externally.

I guess I’ll be using this until the KMplayer makes some needed improvements.

thank you very much for everyones contributions I feel like a heavy burden has been lifted:pray:

Every day. I set the scanner for 4:00 AM pretty much. The computer is pretty much never turned off anyway, so I let it scan when I sleep. Wake up, check the results, comes up empty, yay. Probably not necessary to do it every day, but I’m too lazy to change it now.

Opera 10 beta is great.

Nice, the exact time I set mine to. Props.

Is Avira considerably better than AVG?

Also, for you guys using AIMP2, get the 2.60 beta 2 immediately.

Nice new features, including the ability to browse Shoutcast/Icecast radio stations.

Where is my rep?

Has Wizmouse ever gotten added? Basically it lets you use your scroll wheel on any window that’s open, (including windows that aren’t in focus, which is nice because I get annoyed with having IM pop ups stealing focus while I’m trying to read something)

Link to it is here: http://antibody-software.com/web/software/software/wizmouse-makes-your-mouse-wheel-work-on-the-window-under-the-mouse/

Just post whatever freeware you like to use. What it does and where to get it. It benefits us all so why not. You don’t have to pay to “unlock” any of these programs and they do their job quietly and effectively.
CDisplay is an essential tool for reading manga and comics on your PC.

The StartupRun utility displays the list of all applications that are loaded automatically when Windows boots. For each application, additional information is displayed (Product Name, File Version, Description, and Company Name), in order to allow you to easily identify the applications that are loaded at Windows startup. if StartupRun identifies a spyware or adware program that runs at startup, it automatically paints it in pink color. In addition, you are allowed to Edit, disable, enable and delete the selected startup entries. You can also save the list of startup items into a text or html files, and even add a new startup entry to the Registry.

Namaste.

As much as I love Opera (and the new 10 beta), I’m seriously giving Maxthon serious thought.

Its come a looooooong way, I’m blown away.

Not only does it take up little memory like Opera (Opera 3k of memory, Maxthon 6k), but it has many things built-in that neither Opera or Firefox has without plug-ins (the ability to jack pictures off sites without right clicking, a file sniffer that can download streaming music and youtube videos).

My main thing with Opera was mail, I used it to check POP email accounts. But I’ve seen moved on to using yahoo/gmail more, and also I can check POP accounts with Digsby.

I might have a new browser soon.

Maxthon is still using ie core isn’t it?

Maxthon is awesome, used it for a few years until firefox came out, not that I like firefox better, but using IE core just doesn’t market maxthon as a competitor to IE.

I might use it as a secondary browser later tho, it is better than chrome for sure.

Yeah, IE is still the core.

While this is a downer, in reality, since a lot of the web is still the most compatible with IE its not a big deal. As long as it has improved security, I’m all for it.

The only feature I miss from Opera right now is the speed dial. I miss opening up and having 9 of my favorite sites ready to go to.

I love Maxthon’s Multi-Search. You type in something, and can get results from Google, Yahoo, Flickr, Youtube and a bunch of other sources. I like the ability to create an account which allows you to store your bookmarks online, so if you use Maxthon on another computer, your bookmarks are readily accessible. I mentioned before the ability to jack music/video off of sites is built in, as is a floater button that allows you to save pretty much any image off of a site regardless of protection. Like the built in download manager as well.

Its just extremely feature rich.

you know you can sync opera across multiple computers too, right?

I vaguely recall reading that, but wasn’t sure.

Yep, Opera Sync. I keep my laptops, my desktop, and my phone in sync.

What are the advantages of having them in sync? Updates at once, bookmarks, stuff like that?

As hype as I am/was about Maxthon, I gotta admit it does have some major flaws. One, browsing is nowhere as fast as Opera, which is huge for me. I also don’t like the fact that most of the addons are made by Chinese and have Chinese descriptions… I don’t know wtf the descriptions mean.

That said, I heard 3.0 is in alpha… so I’m going to wait for that in hopes it increases speed.

For now, I’m testing pretty much every browser out. Flock, K-Meleon, Safara, Chrome, Avant… etc.

Avant is almost an exact replica of Maxthon, but it seems to be faster, so I’ll keep that in mind. It too has also gotten much better than the last time I used it.

So far, Flock fails… its basically designed for the Web 2.0 crowd with Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Email in mind. Its pretty clunky and hogs memory. I’m using Safari right now as I type, and it has that usual clunky feel associated with Apple software, but it surprisingly isn’t using that much memory.

Access them anywhere and any changes you make are saved across the board.

I use Opera notes a lot for instance instead of notepad. If I’m on the go or at work, I could save links there that I could review later or passwords, directions etc.

I got the beta 10 on my other computer, I love it so far. Only feature I would like them to add is to be able to visit the page source where you copy/cut the notes from. You can see the original site when you mouse-hover but I can’t copy paste+go it. I have to type the address manually :frowning:

Still the best for me though. The only thing you really need to know how Opera is insanely fast and effective is to look at the system requirements–

Minimum configuration for Opera 9:
20 MB of free disk space
Any system running Windows 95 (or later)
