who says you cant do both?
it seems like they’re mutually exclusive when you’re trying to back up some irrational thought that tournament winning players are saying fuck frame data and playing completely on feel alone

No one is. You’re making the assumption that one supersedes the other, and that what has been said is a blanket generalization of how people learn to play the game.
Everyone has their own methods. What works best for you? - power to you.
i was responding to this post because it was so wrong its not even funny
and i never made any suggestion that one is better than the other. i was simply pointing out the idea that pro players dont know frame data is silly. then i got called out that you dont need it, to which i just gave a quick example as to why having frame data is useful, to which i was told well um some moves aren’t represented correctly in frame data so yeah you’re wrong, which is a point i never made
I just want to say one thing.
Stop putting UltraChen on the mic for Marvel, holy shit. Not only are they completely wrong about everything, but now you’ve got thousands of baddies believing what they said and later repeating it which leads to a bigger mess.
lilkraken brings up the valid point of who the target audience should be. I thought it was obvious in my initial post, but I guess not. Right now, there is no target focus. My suggestion is to change that focus to the crowd who the casual fan that might be willing to learn, but isn’t hardcore. That is the audience that I believe needs to be targetted to help make the FGC grow. It’s also why I suggested to time this new commenting style with a release because people will buy into the initial hype and want to learn more. If that need isn’t sated, it will dissolve and the opportunity will be lost. My prediciton is that the SFxT window will bring a lot of casual players to the table. And I bring up this new way to treat commentary in preparation for that game’s release.
As for MMA and boxing being proof that hype is part of commenting, I disagree. I don’t watch MMA, but for boxing, they actually sound very bored until something exiting happens. When that happens, they get excited, but they try to restrain it so they are able to give play-by-play over the radio. If they were truly working to get the crowd hyped, that wouldn’t be the case.
And thank you piskoooo for proving my point. People LISTEN to the commentors, whether right or wrong. Same is true of real sports. There are some real idiots out there giving wrong advice. But you know what, at least it’s SOME advice. It’s something that will help make the casual players connect more with the game before them. Things such as random jokes and wasting time does nothing at best and at worst, detracts players. I for one go surfing on the net while button checks and player changes happen. I know I will be more enticed to pay attention if there are slow-mo replays and stats on the screen. In fact, you can place an ad on the screen and do a pip of the commentary and replays and I will be more inclined to pay attention.
edit:
I didn’t mean to belittle UltraChen. I actually like them, it works. I meant more that there are some truly idiotic sports commentors out there. No matter how much you dislike UltraDavid and Chen, you really can’t compare to the bottom rung of IRL sports casters. They suck
It is not essential - there are multiple games out there that have no frame data
A lot of top players don’t use frame data - how are the top players of games without frame data using what doesn’t exist?
“Zero does little damage”
Lol, to speak in their favor, they are more open to outsiders of the fighting game genre. Love the fact that David/Chen will hammer in an again fighting terms and try to explain what is going on in detail. They are doing exactly what a commentators should be doing, even if it ends up becoming boring over time. That’s what commentator switch outs are for.
I do feel they are more accustomed to SSF4 than Marvel however, Chen even more so. In a perfect world, we would have Ryan Hunter and any other commentator, color commentary or not on the mic. That dude is quite possibly the best mix of commentary possible.
I don’t think that’s fair. Considering we have absolutely no requirement or expectations for commentators, he does well. Chen has been teaching game mechanics since the alpha series and I think it would go against everything we’ve been ranting about if we left the OGs out in the cold in favor of some Bob Costas wannabee. We can’t accuse people of falling short of non existant job descriptions.
Thats why there’s a need to rotate commentators every now and then. Hearing just UD and JC all the time does get old.Yet im not knocking their skill though. Like with NEC Spooky was rotating commentary after a good amount of sets all of them were good in their own way.
They aren’t bad commentators, they do an incredibly good job of floating by knowing very little about the game. If you think saying things like “Zero does low damage” “he just took a lot of chip” (while in XFactor), saying it was a mistake not to DHC (when he had no meter or when it would have been a bad idea anyway), and calling things new tech months into the games lifespan when it’s been widely known since day 1 is good then I don’t know what to tell you. If they spent time reading about the game and playing it they would be 100x better, but I don’t even think UltraDavid likes the game so that probably won’t happen. Also fuck “OGs.” If someone new does their job better then let them do it. I don’t care if you’ve been around since the dawn of time, if you suck you need to get out.
That’s because Boxing has more space for “dead time” than MMA or fighting games, which have shorter bouts.
Problem I see with #eSports is that it may restrict FGC commentary into that whole “OMG ALL DATA PUT INTO MA BRAIN NOW”
Also PG13, Chat censorship, No more fun trolls etc
If none of the above happened, I would gladly welcome #eSports
People don’t need to know everything to have fun and I think commentary should be putting Fun > Data .
I’m a person who enjoys more of the East Coast kinda commentary but I love it when UD/GC get on the mic .
Disclaimer - I don’t own any consoles nor have I even touched SF4/MVC3 or any of the current-gen fighters but I usually watch FGC major over lets say a LOL Major just because I find that I have more fun watching FGC even though I have no idea about any of the frame-data or any of the more advance stuff .
I also find that FGC chat are ALOT more fun to be in .
The difference is that you are probably someone who will watch fighting games even if there was no commentary. As such the commentary shouldn’t be targeting you. It’s like preaching to the choir. You preach to the weakest believers, not the strongest. Once in a while, you do a sermon for the true believers, but really, it’s not for them.
I’d think that the hype is more because it’s a newer sport and the commentors are just getting hyped and isn’t as professional. I’ve seen a handful of matches and I don’t see why they can’t do it in a calmer manner like they do when there’s nothing going on. I still stand by the concept that commentary is for the casual fan. Cuz, really, how can the casual fan know the difference between one hold vs another. How to counter holds, why certain ones aren’t used anymore, etc.
Even if they do get hype in MMA, then I would attribute that as the wrong way to do commentary, instead of the rule to follow.
lmao
we already know these idiots will buy the game but how can we entice new players? dumps out bag of gems on Capcom board room table
This would be a fucking godsend
There is a big difference however between “would watch fighting games with no commentary” and “would watch fighting games with what is perceived as bad commentary”. Sure you can turn the sound off but now you lose game music, crowd hype, etc due to not wanting to hear the commentary. For this reason commentary still needs to worry about the demographic that got it this far, while still trying to pull in new people.
And those thing would be bad, why? Do you really want your community represented by shit like “Yo yo dat nigga be salty as fuck yo he KFC and pringles and he got straight bodied all day by Sagat nigga hahahahaha so salty!”? Commentators talking about dumb shit like shemales and what their porn name would be? Call me crazy but basketball is pretty exciting, I don’t need some commentator screaming curse words and nigga nigga nigga every 5 seconds to keep me entertained. I’d like to think fightign games are exciting enough that the GAMEPLAY keeps you engaged in watching, not some guy screaming “hahaha salty ass nigga covered in da salt KFC NIGGA!!!”
That shit is part of what gives this community a bad name to outsiders.
funny thing not every east coast commentators are like that and don’t generalize them as such.
Why’d you even waste time replying to such ignorance?
