Uhmmm I haven’t played a rufus maybe everyone dropped him but she beats Seth easy Yun is winnable IMho you just have to sit in one stop far enough to react. Camny is the same way. Whom ever disagreed with the shotos be 7-3 your not playing her correctly you shouldn’t even be rushing in with her your suppose to sit in one spot let the opponent hang themselves or run the clock out
Imo I think she does quite well against divekickers, just got to space them out and use crmk which always works or if they divekick from a high hight shp, if quite close then slp works well.
Hello everyone, long time lurker. Started elena upon release.
Not to sounds Debbie downer but I’m disagreeing that shotos are 7-3. That’s implying they all have the same gameplan.
Elena is a scrub killer, and I don’t like the term scrub but that’s what she does best. Once people learn that her low game has far less payoff without fadc lynx combos, you have a much tougher time as they start blocking high.
A smart ryu won’t zone you. His cr.mp is enough to shut down your mallet smash game and it doesn’t play nice against our own cr.mp, plus he can dp any blocked ex mallets for a nobrainer punish even in lag (for the online players), though he could do bigger. I’d say it is 6 -4 though at the most. Like yeezus said…really gotta be willing to go for time out when needed.
With rose, I focus on footsies. Stay in a range where slide isn’t max distance but weave in and out. You’ll be surprised how often you can punish her slide with cr.lp. since you can focus her fireballs, she has to come to you. Don’t be afraid to eat a throw or two, or four lol. Just don’t let her catch you teching to get hit by her cl.mk. you can pretty much eat three throws before adding up to the damage she can do with a quality tech trap combo. And if she back dashes alot, I don’t think os sweep works, but don’t be afraid to make a raw read and just slide on prediction. Keep her guessing. Mix in throws on her wakeup when she has meter to beat out her ex spiral and give yourself a u2 opportunity.
Rufus is tough when he gets in, but abuse predictive s.hp on his jumps. He has a slow jump and will often go for dive kicks. S.hp will shut that down fast. Really, a fight with rufus is just knowing when to tech and when not to. Jump back hp is amazing in this match too.
Abel in my opinion is one of her worst matchups, if not worst. I usually switch to cammy lol. His ex change of direction blows throw everything, and his mixup game really hurts, and her floaty jump is so slow that sometimes it’s hard to punish a tornado throw that you read with your neutral jump. Biggest thing to remember is abel pretty much has to come to you, and his main footsies are just step kick and s.lk. I tend to go for more hit and run, as I was getting destroyed if I stayed in too long giving pressure. I’m still working on this matchup though.
If you just stand vs Elena you’re going to regret it. Hk lt FADC is too big of a changer just to allow. Your best beet is to block low allowed react to her overheads. Then there’s also cr.mk if you don’t respect her lows you’ll get blown up by that. So no blocking high isn’t the answer.
It’s definitely not always the answer but the majority of people I see eating big combo damage from elena is off of a raw ex mallet, or one combo 'd off a non-low. Cr.mk into mallet/hk lynx is definitely scary, but it’s not nearly as often used as cr.mp just due to the better range on cr.mp.
Hk lynx fadc combos are huge damage though. Once she has two bars, people have to be more aware of that. I honestly barely ever see it on at least the youtube vids I watch of elenas aside from sako. I think alot of elenas use much of their bar on ex mallet and ex dp.
Her overheads are really too fast to truly react to though. Ex mallet is like the same speed as dudleys. The ex flash helps but even then, I think it’s more a matter of prediction in the fact that you are gonna whiff if done less than three crouch normals out in a blockstring, so people start watching for it. If someone is buffering a cr.mk into ex mallet in footsies, It’s very hard to react to
It’s definitely difficult to react to Elena’s ex MS and depending on you use it you’re going to make it even more difficult to react to. Cr.mk is good to use if your opponent is always standing and since it combos into ex ms you can get a pretty solid combo from it. After that your opponent should be more weary about how to block vs Elena.
You just gotta decide what’s the best use of meter in a given situation. But that’s nothing Elena only. I’ve seen some Elena do hk lt fadc into heal. So it depends on who you see I guess. But Elena with meter has a lot of options.
I have zero clue what to do again a down back honda with stock. I feel like this is one of her worst match up to be honest, I’d rather fight yun’s and cammy’s all day.
Punishes vs Honda:
L/M/H Headbutt: Block standing > Ultra 1
M/H Headbutt: Slide
H Headbutt: EX Mallet Smash
EX Headbutt: cr.MP xx EX Mallet Smash
EX Headbutt: Block standing > cr.LP xx M Spin Scythe
L/M/H Handslap: cr.LP xx M Spin Scythe. The timing varies depending on range.
Other stuff:
Smash: Hit him out of it with st.MK / st.MP / st.LP.
Headbutt: cr.LK stuffs it. Don’t try this against the EX version though.
Just make sure your punishes are on point and walk at him.
Is it just me or is the Gouken matchup ridiculously easy? I haven’t had any troubles against him at all but I see people saying it’s 5-5 or 6-4 Gouken
Also vs Yang/Yun, st.lp is amazing. Shuts down divekicks comepletely.
Rufus is still a very hard matchup though… not sure how to go about winning that one since he can instant divekick
Rose matchup is broken, have to completely change my gameplay to win. She can punish spin scythe on hit since it whiffs the 2nd hit when she’s crouching, have to use either HK lynx or LK rhino to end combo instead. I typically abuse throw against her since it’s the only safe pressure against her EX spiral.
I fight a Gouken all the time. I remember starting Ultra with Elena about a month after he started with Gouken. I beat him 10-0. The thing is Gouken CAN NOT chuck plasma at Elena like a lot of other characters. Her anti-zoning is on par with Rose and any red fireball user. Slide is a godsend in this fight, because the Gouken player is screwed once you enter that sweet spot for making it safe. His best non-projectile tools are his sweep and 3 frame jab. However, Elena’s airborne moves and crouching hurtboxes render those invalid. Gouken can play a bit smarter with his counters, but then he opens himself up to throws. I have also noticed that some of his combos are much harder on Elena than normal.
dont know if this has been said already. but vs balrog, you can slide poorly spaced dash punches and turn punches. totally goes under the punch and gets you a knock down.
At this point, the only trouble I am having is against Rufus (well, and the Rolento MU but that’s not too bad.) I just can’t find a reliable way to get Rufus off of me. I have searched on these forums and found some bits about 3 button tech but that doesn’t seem like the best idea.
One thing I have trying to buffering normals with srk in case he jumps which is very useful at mid range. But when he gets in it’s really hard. S.LP xx LT (close up) works sometimes but seems to get beat a lot.
Just curious if anyone has some advice for the MU. (I’m not really interested in playing other characters. Just don’t have the time to learn more right now.) Appreciate any advice. Thanks!
Tod that MU just sucks! But have you been using standing hp when he jumps? That button just hits him out of the sky when he’s trying to close in. I rush him down until he has three bars no good Rufus player is not going to spend meter unless he has a read until they get three bars then sit back let them hang themselves. That’s how I’ve been approaching the MU
Yeah. I use all versions of anti airs depending on the distance of the jump. Though if Rufus does Divekick at certain times S.HP will whiff and get hit. It’s a tricky AA. Hmm…
I suppose I have forgotten how bad he is without the meter. I will keep that in mind. Maybe try more aggressive to start the match. The Rufus I play though, spends meter pretty freely. He’s one of the best players in the area so he isn’t afraid to spend a little extra for jab links into ex tornado. I should take advantage of that too maybe. I just need a way to stop his momentum and pressure.
Going to spend some more time in the lab and test some OS ideas as well. Thanks Yeezus_Walks.
Tod, another good tool against rufus is reading jumpins with your jumpback hp. You can’t abuse it in case he starts ex snakestrike, but you can almost always land a couple. Several characters can do this well against rufus
For an example, check Julio playing Ricky Ortiz at west coast war zone recently. He does a similar strategy with yun
