El Fuerte Matchups and Strategies v.2 ***Updated 02APR10***

You can use lots of the combo’s from my 2nd combo as block strings and just interrupt them and go for a throw or run stop throw. If you are out of range for a throw (after f+MK, 3xLP you are still close enough to walk up for the throw) end your block string with c.MK.
From c.MK xx backrun you can choose between tostada, cross-up tostada, tortilla, stop & FA, ultra their DP, shower kick, HK, c.HK, air throw… be creative and try to predict their next move.

You sir, are AWESOME  thanks a lot, now time to practice!

Question about Blanka to those who consider themselves comfortable with the matchup:

Is it even worth doing wakeup games on him? it seems like the blanka up ball beats splashes, tortillas and slides, the only way to punish it is if its baited with a stop, the risk seems too high to do anything else, which kills the wakeup game. I try to really be patient with Blanka but I hate the fact that I can’t apply most of my mixup options against him, is there a way to apply pressure without being too risky? Any specific tricks for Blanka would help, especially for the wakeup game.

His Vert Ball beats pretty much everything we can do on wake up… if you have meter, you can run stop ex guac though.

Runback stop forward jump will avoid even an EX vertical ball if timed right, and you can cross-up fierce if he doesn’t do it. Atleast in my experience, though I don’t have a whole ton of Blanka experience and I got knocked out at one in a tournament this past Friday (DeLucifer). And if he misses with a ball, you can punish with slide.

You’re doing it wrong. I love it when they DP. more counter opportunities fient more.

Sorta kinda updated. mentioned the note for Sagat geting up slower then most. Added the “Tricks” Section for fun gimmicks If there’s something you feel I should add to the individual matchups let me know via PM As I saw what I thought was repeat discussion

Two things I hate about Blanka is his hopping around to confuse me on which side to block, to EX upball (or crouching forward, ultra). The second thing is that he can’t be corpse hopped, in my experience. Anyone else notice that?

blanka’s vertical ball doesn’t beat anything. the EX version does however.

Safe tortilla is not punishable by anything, thats why its called safe tortilla lolz. Just get that down then he will think twice about up balling when you punish him, which then opens up all your mix up. Its the same with your crossup splash too if you time it right upball misses it.

This matchup is still annoying even when you got it down, just be very patient and get your far mp down to stop balls at full screen and if you have good enough reflexes, slide when you notice a slow ball thats gonna stop before it gets to you.

Thanks guys,

hmm, the problem with trying to cross Blanka with a jump fierce or splash is his electricity, a good Blanka knows that you have limited options and will do it on reaction to your jump to prevent you from applying pressure, but its worth trying once in a while just to be unpredictable I guess  Ill try my best, I think I have been a bit too scared to do much on wakeup, but its worth taking some risks just to put in at least some sort of pressure.

@IIPeru: Is the timing for safe tortilla the same for the vertical ball as it is for DP? I seem to do it fine against shotos and many other characters with antiairs, but for some reason I rarely succeed against Blanka. I know its possible, I just want to verify if the timing is exactly the same as the other characters. Thanks a lot and appreciate the advice.

Its not worth using against blanka unless you know hes going to fire out electricity. Up ball beats tortilla every time. The Balrog/blanka video by nothingman is a good reference for the blanka matchup.

Thanks. Yea i have seen this, its what lead me to believe that doing Okizeme on Blanka is just too risky, and its much better to be patient instead of trying to apply pressure. I will still try out some of the ideas posted, It seems that maybe its possible to some extent with well timed tortillas and splashes, but defintitely not completely safe as against almost all other characters.

The good thing is Blanka takes a lot of time to recover after his balls, so punishing him with RSF and ultra is much easier than many other characters (please correct me if I am wrong on this). I think this matchup can be the hardest for new Fuerte players just because Blanka has a lot of tricks and requires a very different strategy, but once he is figured out it is not as bad as it looks. I still need to learn it better because I don’t get exposed to it a lot, so I appreciate all the advice :pleased:

The tortilla reset also works against another El Fuerte.

What I’d like to see is a list of characters that Fuerte can cross-under with slide after RSF, with the slide not hitting. Fuerte’s body just passes under the other. I know it happens during mirror matches to me VERY OFTEN. Anyone else seen this?

My current take on El Fuerte’s match-up numbers:

7:3 Dhalsim | Gouken | Sakura
6:4 Guile | Rose | Vega
5:5 Blanka | C.Viper | Chun-Li | Dan | Gen | Ken
4:6 Abel | Balrog | Cammy | M.Bison | Ryu | Sagat | Seth | Zangief
3:7 Akuma | E.Honda | Fei Long | Rufus
1:9 El Fuerte :wgrin:

My most important reasons for bad match-ups are:

 • They can easily escape your wake-up pressure and/or Ultra
 • You cannot easily escape their wake-up pressure
 • They do a shitload of damage

i HAVE had it happen the on balrog and vega. never anywhere else. lots on balrog. i think it comes from firing the slide WAY too soon. i was doing FA>F, RSF, RS-Slide and WHOOSH right through the reeling animation. but im much better with timing now and havent seen it much lately due to the fact the i now like to stop RSF intentionally (after 4 hits-ish) to make people try something… to which i re-RSF

anybody else seen it much.

No it doesn’t if you do safe tortilla it will miss where you can then punish. When your doing it you want to aim more towards the back of there head, if you try and do it more towards the front like your doing it to ryu it will hit you.

This may help

My first day playing SF4 and my brother whips me with his non flowchart Ken and very boring, simple minded Guile.

Mybrother likes to spam crouching Mk and F+Mk but due to Fuerte’s slow normals I get beat out. I try focusing but I usually trade I think I’m missing something here. Then again I came back using a controller not my stick.

I also hate Ryu and Ken’s j HK it seems to stuff everythingin the air including air throw and regular guac. He’s also smart enough to not jump around like a retard. Also is itjust me or does Ken’s dp NOT get beat by safe tortilla? I can beat his super but not none of the dps
