El Fuerte Matchups and Strategies v.2 ***Updated 02APR10***

that would be amazing!..i know theyre hookin everyone up in ssf4 so maybe they will give him even better stuff =)

would be nice indeed but i doubt it… actually i like fuerte as he is
i dont think the ssf4 changes are going to be THAT noticeable for fuerte somehow…

well, still hoping for nice additions and upgrades.

The main problem with gordita sobat is that everything else is better in all situations.

Tostada: invincibility on the up. Knockdown. Useful vs fireballs. Controllable distance
Fajita: mixup. Though nearly as useless as gordita since crouch evades. Controllable
Back step: better then our back dash
sudden stop: has mixup options by itself.
Tortilla: has a safe version, controllable, grabs grounded person, links to super
picadillo: usefull for escaping
Slide: knockdown, good after ex run. But normal slide is better.

we look at gordita and I see a move that links to super and is a flashy setup for it after RSF but gets defeated the same way other run options get beat but with none of the applications or benefits of the others. Even with +2 frame advantage or even +3 I still don’t see it having use.

i just wanted to tell you guys that i just beated a wake-up-ultra from boxer with a cr.RH

always thought thats not possible but it didnt even trade!

from my experience it will beat his ultra only if you meaty slide while he’s waking up to ultra. great guess, sir.

This tips have improved my game greatly. Thank you for the tips.

i know it happens once every blue moon, but i got destroyed twice by the same guy in a mirror match online. we started both matches with a classic double taunt, so i know that i was facing a real fuerte man. except that HE seemed to know the match-up. i don’t understand why i lost, i haven’t learned but one thing from those two matches : tortilla beats the hell out of every options offered by run except run stop. i got that covered by the first round of second match.
i need more info !

if you KNOW what he is going to do, then i would suggest that you react to that like you would with any other character against fuerte.

example: focus for tosada and so on…

i made the experience that if you dont know or cant guess what he is going to do, then ex guac or lk guac is your way to get out of the oki-game safely.
any other advices from fellow fuertes?

I’ve found sliding a lot as they are waking up works. By sliding I mean down+roundhouse. creats frame advantage and stops their running. also it slides under their wakeup ultra. they might grab you, guac escape, but not much more than that, that i’ve seen. It’s a surprisingly simple strategy that works pretty well for me. Hahaha.

maybe you arent doing your slide meaty enough, online latency can cause trouble aswell as just higher priorities.

slide on block is almost safe but not completely, nor leads to blockstrings.

it does give you frame advantage but i wouldnt always speculate on that

Which gate is better for Elf? Octagate or Square gate?

its about preference imo.
for myself, im playing with square.

maybe some of the better fuertes can give a suggestion
like brainz, kai, cheapocrespo and so on.

honestly dude it’s just preference.

wat yu mean by which gate is better.?

the way ii play ELF is rush down/mix-up…ii know it sounds wierd.

ii like 2 rush down cuz ii want ppl 2 mash DP…if they do…ii could get a free RSF
and mixup…is my other thing ii love 2 do…sumtimes ii do like 4 slides in a row…and then 5 torillas in a row…

“Gate” refers to the way the box for the joystick is cut.(dunno if those are the right terms)

Square gate means it’s square shaped, so you move the joystick to the corners of a square when you do diagonals. Octagate means it’s octogonal shaped so all directions are the corners of an octagon.

I’m used to square gate myself so that’s my preference.

Also, I’ve surprisingly been using Gordita Sobat more in my matches. Although it’s crap damage and I never use the super cancel because I never have a full super bar, but…

  • It’s good for footsies. It’s got just a bit more range than most sweeps, and even outranges a lot of Chun Li’s pokes.(I started doing more sobats after fighting a good Chun)

  • It’s a good quick move to fill that irritating range just outside where standing MP can reach.

  • Just run and sobat immediately, and you’ve got a move that closes distance fast, and is safer than slide. It’s range is deceiving.

  • Because it’s just that little bit faster, it hits people who are trying to react to a splash/slide.

  • Safer against people who react to Tortilla and Tostada with jump back HP/HK. I’m getting a lot of those lately because a simple jump back HP/HK on reaction shuts down a lot of my options.

  • Sobat is a less high risk option to close distance on turtlers, hit box extends further than f+MK.

  • On max range hit, frame advantage lets you back run into your next guessing game, perfect distance that back run tortilla will beat almost all footsie/fireball attempts.

  • On close range hit, links to standing LK, then cancel into run.

  • However, random or on-reaction focus attacks will stuff you up. Gordita sobat should be used very sparingly if you want to try it out.

I now usually do a sobat about once or twice a match, usually after I’ve done some Tortillas to discourage focus attacks but have trouble getting in with my other moves.

what’s the Gordita Sobat on BLOCK thats what I wanna know

I’ve been saying this except without all the info lol. I don’t know wut it is on block, but I’ve been able to go into cr mk loop off it kinda like cr rh.

I’ll consider myself to fall under the “and so on” part.
I’ve had much experience with both types of gates, switched back and forth a couple times. I thoroughly enjoy my octogate. When I switch back to square, I screw up a lot at first: stuff like simple runnning doesn’t happen, which is extremely annoying. When going from square to octogate, I become enveloped with a sense of calm as my run never fails, and I never end up doing EX guac while trying to Ultra. The reason that would happen is because I would get stuck up the 90 degree corner, and not make it all the way to finish the command. It definitely comes down to preference, and just getting used to them. For now, I’ll stick with my Octogate…unless I pick up Guile again, haha.

I prefer Octogate over a circular gate. The Octogate may be an compromise between square and circular, but being able to easily feel the corners makes it better. Alright, no more talking for me.

Expanding your Game + Tricks

Habanero Dash Has More moves then listed; Expanding your Wakeup and Mind game

Under normal circumstances I’d say tricks are just gimmicks for other characters. But given Fuerte’s ridiculous Wakeup game and pathetic poking game, I’d say footsies, but movement and intentionally whiffed moves are part of footsies… unless I’m horridly mistaken.

But it is my belief that is these exact gimmicks and tricks are the life blood of this character. I’d like to compile all of that info and put it here for people to see, as I believe this is what will take a player to the next level.

So let’s get to it then.

When I see vids of some of us guys here in the community as well as some of the Best Fuerte’s around, thought back to when Saco spanked me, it was due to many moves being done unconventionally

Off both the Forward and Back run we only have so many command moves, but as you know, by pressing :lp: el fuerte recovers immediately, this is the basis behind RSF… But who’s to say we are limited to only the RSF as far as taking advantage of sudden stop? The crMK loop is an example…but we’re looking at easier stuff.

An Example:

Hab Back run xx sudden stop xx f+mk

If the opponent jumped You’ll be fine, and you can likely Guacamole them too.
Blocked high? Lp Block string
Crouch block? ha ha ha… LP block string anyway.
FA? Mash throw

Just remember to hold forward and then use the well known Plinking Technique (which is what we do for RSF in the first place.)

And you are singlehandley adding more moves to what he can do.

Stuff off of run that works:

These apply to BOTH forward and back runs.

Habanero Dash xx Sudden Stop -> F+mk

Habanero Dash xx Sudden Stop -> Jump Forward

Habanero Dash xx Sudden Stop -> cr HK

Trick Triiiiiiiicks

These are mainly gimmicks.

Gimmick Combos (I.E not reccomened for constant use):

clFP xx Q-Bomb (Non knockdown) xx Super.

clHK xx Tostada Press. This is a quick way to switch sides on people, you have to be quick about it though.

Gimmicks: These are tricks that dont work on everyone

Tortilla Reset: You have an opponent in the corner and you Tortilla him/her quickly move forward and you can land a standing or crouching lk xx Super
