How I got better at fighting games:
Wanting it more than anyone in my area.
Le Fin.
You want it, you’ll do anything in your power to get better. doesn’t matter what that entails
I will say this. Pointing fingers at anyone other than yourself when you’re talking about leveling up is a mistake. It’s all your own initiative.
Now that’s different from ShinAkuma just being the douche he usually is - i’m not telling you “Yer on yer own kid, do it yerself”, but you’re not going to get better by not actively seeking ways to get better. That said it’s also unrealistic to expect people to coach you, since nobody gets that treatment, yet apparently we’re all aware of that with the exception of ShinAkuma who felt it was better to try to make you feel weak / stupid about it.
My level up process was like this:
- Picking the character I wanted. That was easy, there is no way I cannot play Vega if he’s in a game.
- Learning what he was good at, slowly learning what everyone else was good at - I got decent here. Still lost at tourneys in Calgary but i was levelling up fast.
- Frame data. Once I learned frame data I started making a name for myself. The game began to make perfect sense.
- I can actually attribute this period to a ‘wall’ that I didn’t think existed until now. There is stuff from back then I still have yet to perfectly incorporate into my game, the least of which are option selects and on-the-fly hit confirms. Thankfully, losing to Daigo during this period guaranteed I levelled up tremendously since i got buttfucked so badly. I learned some shit needless to say.
- Mindgames. mindgames mindgames mindgames. Once I got good with Vega and went toe to toe with pros by doing what Vega actually is good at, instead of randomly hoping to bait SRKs and play “perfect defense” (A fallacy) I began to feel the sort of kinetic force that exists in intense footsies. you know where to be at, so do they, but you’re both struggling for that space in every way possible. At this point I began to play Street Fighter. Took a long time.
- Strive for perfection. I had mindgames, I had execution a long time ago, what I needed was the perfect combination of both. Constantly changing mindsets so I could never say I had “Aggressive mindset, defensive mindset, passive-aggressive etc.,” My mindset was just “Mindset”. Adaptive and flexible. the way to win. I continue to work on this.
- Now it is a slight reversion. I feel like I subconsciously level up alllllllll the time, especially when i lose. Just by thinking about the game ( Which I don’t do as much of anymore, although when I play I’m generally going 100%) I get better. Now I’m just working on the matchups. Option selects to shut everything down, etc., I need to know this shit. my footsies are fine, my offense needs work. It’s all about expanding your mind.
I attribute my success 90% to my love of SFIV, 5% to myself and 5% to my community. I am good at SFIV simply because I want to be. game is too good. I like SFXT and KOFXIII too as well, so i wanna be good at them. it’s that simple. Once I have that goal in my mind, i just do anything to get there. All the hows and ifs and etcs., answer themselvev if you play enough and ask yourself enough meaningful questions. just be aware and adaptive and you will get better.
Dear god why haven’t I seen this before? Haven’t had a laugh like that in a while.
Are we still meeting up at OK tomorrow for SFxT casuals?
best advice if you want to prepair for a tournmanet, do what I do!

Make sure you watch all the way to the end, so you get the point!
SRK took all the character threads that were made pre-release and made them the official threads… now the first thousand pages are outdated beta talk and speculation from a bunch of clowns that just wanted to make the thread title, what a cluster fuck.
Yo Vesper, any help for Sagat’s trial 15 and 20? EX knees don’t seem to connect and high step to low step in 20 just doesn’t work regardless of spacing from corner, timing, etc.
Also had problems with one of Hugo’s (ends with EX clap, stand LMH punch, but the final fierce always whiffs no matter what I do), and one of Gief’s (stand MP, stand MP, stand jab, stand short xx EX greenhand, stand short is always out of range even if I try to walk forward between the pokes as much as it seems possible).
I haven’t done Sagat yet, I’ll get back to you once I do them.
Hugo - Trial 19, You have to walk slightly forward after EX Clap. Very slightly.
Gief - Same thing, you have to walk slighty forward after the S.LP to be in range of S.LK, VERY slightly. You have the right idea. Keep trying.
I feel noob but im having problems linking 2 crouch mediums into mountain raze for pauls 15th trial i think, any1 have any tips?
Sagat trial 20 you have to whiff the stand short
Does anybody know a way to beat mission mode 19 against akuma? that stuff is beyond broken.
Thanks, got it! You do have to kara cancel the low step kick (basically instantly). Got 15 as well more or less first try after hitting only once with the first EX knee. Not sure why it didn’t work before, because I’m pretty sure I tried that. Oh well. Got Hugo’s lame “walk forward a bit” one, too.
So that’s 18 characters complete, and a few others at 95%. Dhalsim’s 20 is really stupid, Cammy’s 20 is hard, and one of Chun’s has a low forward that just goes through Kazuya’s feet repeatedly, so I ragequit that one.
Dalton, did you read that from the Brady Guide? lol.
Put in p4u into youtube search and you will find tons of match vids.
Most of it uploads are straight downloads from Nico Video
Rolento/Oger mash away.
I’m trying to figure out Bob. It’s hard to remember all the follow-ups to his special moves.
sfxt - don’t know how to feel about it except that I don’t love it after 2 hours.
I’m pretty sure I think I like it… I think? But if they don’t fix that ridiculous netcode thats worse than MK9 its going to be dead to me. Not to mention I still can’t get the hang of slowing down chain combos to get links to better stuff instead. Its like there’s no point to do anything but mash the launcher string right now.
Link combos do way way more damage. Chains scale your damage quite a bit. I think in the future you’re going to see launchers almost exclusively for meter less tagging out
