Dudley Q&A: Let's learn... like Gentlemen!

so mean Thirtyfour.

English isn’t his first language, he could also well be 15 or 35 who knows/cares.

I have a mindset problem at the moment, I practice training mode combos like f.mk > cr.lp > s.hk xx whatever, however In games i always go f.mk cr lp cr lp st hk.

it a) ruins my range and b) scales the combo, I don’t really know why I do it but is it just a ‘play more’ thing ? I guess it’s because I never know when the f mk will hit, even tho the cr.lp lets me confirm and s.hk is safe on block anyway. :frowning:

stay in training mode
master combo timing

stop asking how to time combos

holy hell

please stop asking how to combo
it is the least of your worries when it comes to playing Dudley

It’s not an issue of playing more, but an issue of actually making yourself DO what you want you to do. If you want to make what you practice work, you have to go into matches and force yourself to do the things you practiced as opposed to what you are accustomed to doing. Just make sure you say to yourself mentally, “I am going to do ____ every time the opportunity comes up as opposed to doing what I normally do.” If you play people with that mentality, you will quickly apply the stuff you practiced.

hey everyone, this is my first time posting on here…i was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a dudley approach for a charge player? i main dee jay in AE, but used to main blanka/claw in super…so im just looking for some tips on how i can utilize dudley so he can be a resourceful sub for dee jay (and possibly the other two if i stick with them) to change things up a bit and make them switch their game up.

i used to play dudley and cody back when i was on the d-pad…but had trouble getting used to them on the TE stick so i became a charge character player…but ive been itching to get back to dudley. so any help will be appreciated…in the meantime, im lurking…apologies in advance if i find a previously posted answer to my question while doing so.

Best advice I can give you is practice. I mained rog in vanilla and I can tell you it was a BITCH to learn how to play dudley, but your controls will only get better with practice. The more time you spend in training mode at first means the more fluent the controls come and the more you can focus on the actual match.

Practice the motions, alter doing c.lk -> c.lp OR** f.hk TO s.hk ->EX MGB -> c.hk(1-2x) -> U2** combo in corner untill your hands hurt, this one is especially good since you learn to proper links, “fast enough” motion for u2 and Plinking(which you should learn for duds).
Learn to use the down forward/down/downforward shoryuken motion shortcut, practice EX jet upper FADC to c.hk U2, practice doing the motions facing both ways.

Start practicing using the proper punishes, that usually something like this

f.mk->s.hk XX LP Jet upper juggled into
[]EX duck straight -> U2/EX duck upper (it works right? not 100% sure on the upper)
[
]HP Jet upper (misses lot of the cast outside of the corner)
[]Straight to U2
[
]Super (might miss some at mid screen)

LP MGB(only in corner)
I really want to emphasize this since at least for me it was really hard to stop doing shitty punishes like c.mp xx mp MGB.

Movement is a huge deal, I used to be very turtley with charge characters so it was weird learning to move and not just block down back constantly, remember that Dudley is best when he’s right in the opponents face.

This is all I can think of so far, these were the hardest things and best practices for me when I made the switch from charge to “normal input” character

Learn how to get the motion you want when you want it. I’ve gotten EX MGB instead of EX Jet Uppercut many times because I was holding down-back to block and then had to quickly input the dp motion. This game is stupid with how much input leniency there is. It’s a lot different than a charge character.

@ragequit, best simple advice for u is to just get the muscle memory by practicing in training mode and live matches. Get the mentality of rushing that shit down when you get your opportunities, but to your advantage you use to be a charge player, so you know how to play patient, which is someting alot of duds lack, so understanding when to turn it on and when to back off will be key for you.

sum1 tel hwo 2 dudely

Jump-in forever and full screen EX MGB.

And Hard MGB too !

You know I was kidding right? That’s a recipe to get murdered.

Oh sorry

Hello my fellow Dudleys.

How do you guys feel he is in AE? I currently find him to be one of the biggest sleepers right now and i think he feels so at home and much better in this game. I feel like i can actually get inside a little bit more now due to the defensive characters being less viable now. Thoughts?

I still think he sucks.

This.

Gonna whore Fei and Yang.

Defensive characters got worse but they buffed others. With his poor wake up and escape options, he’s more or less in the same position as before.

Dudley is definitely better, but he’s not going to blow anyone away. I really miss easy-mode Counter-hit st. roundhouse xx short duck > st. roundhouse frame traps and the like 7 frame window you have to land the link. Now, I have to waste meter and have a tighter window to do the same combo.

Also agree with Mr.X. Yang is where it’s at. He has an actual cross-up.

This.

I’m so disgruntled by how AE is turning out to be. EVERYONE is dropping their mains and playing top tier. No surprise. I think Dudley is better simply because everyone in the entire SF4 Vanilla cast except Bison, Gief, Akuma, and Ken basically got the boot and was nerfed. Dudley got BETTER as an offensive character in a highly offensive based game. I think Dudley is mid tier at the moment. He has bad match ups with chun, rog, sim, etc but judging by all the crap ive been hearing i really dont think im going to have to deal with too many of those match ups.

This is exactly why fighting games are getting worse. No one wants to learn a game anymore. People want the easy solution.

definitely think dudley vs sim is less in dhalsims favor now. dhalsim is so weak now dudley can take more hits and get in and fuck up dhalsim. when dhalsim is in the corner, gg.

Every fighting game is unbalanced, you’re going to have to deal with it. Dudley still struggles from his bad matchups like in super, but less from rose, dhalsim, maybe Balrog. imo Dudley’s worse matchup is gief in AE.

I think Dudley struggles less with Rog because of forward strong and the fact that you can basically stick that out at any time and pick up either his limbs or a dash punch.
