Dudley Q&A: Let's learn... like Gentlemen!

Yeah I almost exclusively play online. Sometimes, though rarely, the connection will murder me but most of the time It’s me messing up that makes me lose.

I’ll work on these. I sometimes hit grab just after a hit or during, which lets me block but can save me from walk-up grab/tick throw; which I have trouble reacting to. Can be a bitch, especially against Akuma and a few others, but my reactions are shit, about 250ms. Which, added to latency and input delay etc can make some of those impossible for me to react to.

Well on someone’s wake-up I either chose to go low, overhead or bait something; rarely going for a grab if I’ve flustered someone into blocking. I pretty much need to push when I get a knockdown, it’s so common to turn a knockdown into 300-600 damage with a few good guesses with Dudley (I got 2 perfects today because of this). I’ve started baiting more but you say I can turn that guess into a grab reset? I’ve been holding down back to be honest, if the bait didn’t “work”.

Beyond a delayed grab can you reliably (maybe half the time) turn a missed bait into a mix-up and several hundred damage without resetting the situation completely; or being punished for “letting them out” so to speak. I get that an Ultra, EX DP is much less likely a second after wake-up but without the advantage of a meaty attack can Dudley really out-prioritize the other characters and avoid being grabbed.

Also can a delayed crouching jab be followed up without pushing you too far back to hit-confirm or combo at all; presuming it will stop wake-up or delayed wake-up grab?

How can I practice buffering EX MGB under a s.HK to counter-poke without just getting my ass kicked? I got stunned by T.Hawk the first time I tried. I want to learn to do it, (only did it once today) but I feel like I’m committing to “not blocking” at which point I get hit and fall into a mix-up. I get a lot of mileage out of the rest of those methods btw.

I guess it’s just because I’m trying to get in without getting touched and I’m inconsistent with my versions of Duck. I used to only use HK Duck (outside of combos) because you get the most horizontal range for fireball punishing but I learnt (only a day or two ago) that LK and MK are faster; so experimenting with those is probably messing me up. Also I kinda suck and they have several kinds of fireballs each of which can kill me on block and can probably out-footsie me (and Dudley) If I get close. I’m a whole lot better at Rolling Thunder on wake-up than Duck, I get hit while I’m inputting duck more than I’d like to admit.

Will do.

This is one area where I’m better than I would expect; I pretty fluidly decide what I’m going to do and I absolutely love playing SF rock, paper, scissors with Dudley’s oki mix-up. Almost no one blocks more than half of my guesses and I can tell what someone is thinking as they get up (most people expect overheads all day) and switch just when they get wise. I think turning a bait into a mix-up is my next step. My execution is only getting better but having the opportunity for a potential punish (One of Dudley’s specialties) and turning that into another rigged guessing game sounds amazing.

Thanks for the help man, I don’t know whether you’re just a really helpful person or you can’t stand to see Dudley misrepresented and played poorly but It’s appreciated. I’ll make my Dudley a killer if it kills me.

I think he’s referring to the certain, shall we say, “mentality” of online players in general, not necessarily your connection.

Only PSN is bad.
(insert joke about last week)

It’s funny because you’re the one always complaining about how your area doesn’t have a scene. If online is good why does it matter?

i never complained about my area 'not" having a scene.
i post in DE thread from time to time

i dont see where you’re getting at.

is psn up yet

What kind of frame reversals can you block with a backthrow? And when you’re talking about a delayed cr.LP, do you mean a cr.LP which isn’t a meaty?

Yes.

With a backthrow I’m talking about the same thing as delayed cr.lp. It’s not this godlike option because if they wakeup OS tech you’ll get hit but against characters with fast uppercuts it’s a way to do stuff while not worrying about reversal uppercut.

O, a delayed throw! I misread it. Thought you were on to some awesome free sort of pressure I didn’t know of.

If only…

dudley has free pressure.

its called c.LP c.LP LP MGB EX Jet Upper FADC onb lock

I only just realized Ryu’s (and I assume some others) shoryuken has invincibility from the first frame. 3 frames of start-up + that invincibility. What can I do to keep up pressure with Dudley, theoretically a mashed or reversal shoryu beats any blockstring I attempt. Is there anything Dudley can do against a blocking shoto; that is safe against a shoryuken past c.LP,c.LP xx LP MGB (as thirtyfour said). I thought there would be loads of options to mix-and-match normals, LP MGB, SSB and LK Duck that would be no worse than -2 on block and therefore safe.

No wonder I’ve had trouble being completely consistent with my Oki online.

What am I looking for in the moves’ frame data for safety. Do I need frame-advantage always? If I use a +3 move then use s.HK am I going to lose to mashed/reversal shoryu in the 1 frame between the initial block stun and the s.HKs active frames kicking in?

I’ll do the work on making my blockstrings/frame-traps I just need to know whether a string that leaves a 1 frame gap is a frame-trap that’s reliable to use or shoryu-bait. I’m guessing I need some that are truly safe (or as close as can be) to bait unsafe reversals and some that beat all my opponents safe options (Jab etc).

Right now I just random my way to a knockdown and win with Dudley’s Oki mix-up or lose lol. I need to strengthen this part of my game; I only bait shoryus on wake-up atm.

What Duck should I use against typical fierballs, I used to use HK because it’s got the longest Ducking Straight range but with those extra start-up frames and putting you closer to hurt if you guess wrong. Then I started using LK and creating a mind game of getting hit in the face with plasma enough times (by accident) to give my opponent confidence, then Rolling Thunder to victory. I’m guessing MK Duck if I suck at spacing/timing.

I’m gonna go lurk on SSF4s replay channel looking for good Dudley’s and YouTube to try and figure this out. Any help would be appreciated. I’m pretty new to this shit. Oh and I’m never quitting Duds, I don’t care how difficult it is or how long it takes I’ll turn mine into a threat; besides, I don’t think I know how to learn new characters.

Edit: I take it you’re not a fan of the Bison match-up Mellow?
Edit 2: Removes some clutter.

Experiment with differnt normals
things like

jab DELAYED jab (delayed enough but not too much to get grabbed)

good to know what your opponent likes to do under pressure
if you get hit during the gap then obv, the guy’s pressing buttons.
SRK? jab? HOLDINGING BACK+GRAB?!? crouch tech? HOLDING UP ?!?!?

cant do block strings and other mixup without first conditioning your opponent into not pushing buttons btw.

boy do i make the worst replies

also dont look at other dudleys because there are none online doing well in ranked
and add endlessmgb

I read what you offered and tried to implement some of it for some ranked matches. Namely the delayed normals as part of a mix-up or oki and the importance of reading my opponent’s choices during pressure.

I had something like a 6 win streak and hit 2,000 PP for the first time (a while after the streak, all in Same Skill). So thanks man lol. I’ve never seemed more psychic when avoiding wake-up moves or punished so many poorly realized DPs.

I played the same Ken a few times and realized he loved doing DPs but if punished would block the next attack; turned those into mix-up opportunities and beat him consistently since then, he was maybe 2,000-2,300 PP during our matches.

Edit: Endlessmgb is an account not a recommended strategy lmao. I’m a goddamn idiot lol. Added it.

Thanks I really appreciate the help! I was wondering what is the best punish for chuns and roses backdash? Im sorry if this question was answered already but I couldnt find it in the threads.

Hi, I was wondering if someone could tell me how dudley does against dhalsim, honda, bison, guile, chun, balrog, rose, and seth. Those are the matchups that I don’t like with my main char, and I was wondering if you think any of them are good, even, or winnable in duds favor. I was playing dudley for a good while, but I lost all of my matchup knowledge already cuz I was just learning and then mvc3 came out.

Basically I play DJ, and it’s hell to get in on Dhalsim, Guile, and Seth. So I figure since dudley is hard hitting he’s got a better chance since he needs to get in fewer times. And I was curious about Dudley vs. Honda match, cuz if I remember it was even or in Dudley’s favor.

All of those match ups are not in Dudley’s favor imo.

Those matchups are 5-5, with the possible exception of Seth which is in my opinion 6-4 to Seth.

Played someone from here yesterday.

Who approaches with MP MGB reversal LP HP Jet Upper.

Its like nothing gets through to these people

Honda in console super is slightly in Honda’s favor imo. It is pretty even in AE due to his nerfs and Dudley’s buffs.

Guile, Chun, and Rose are also slightly favored imo, but are not as bad as many Dudley players might think. Also more even in AE

A good Rog, Bison, Sim should all dominate Dudley pretty hard. His options are very limited in these match ups unless he can score a knockdown.

Seth can dominate Dudley, but one mistake pretty much ends the round.

I have friends who grab every single duck under I do in block strings (such as lp>lp>hk>duck) I’m so used to grabbing people after the duck since people fall for it online a lot that I end up getting teched every time I play my friends. What do you guys usually do when this happens to you? I was thinking of ssb to hit their grab but I tried it in training mode and its really easy to grab the ssb if you just mistime the grab by a tiny bit…also you could just shoryuken the ssb if you see it coming. Is uppercut really the best solution I have?

Also I have a hard time deciding what to do when I play kens (kens that are actually really good) when I’m at mid/long range. I usually buffer hk>exmgb to catch a step kick (f.mk) but I usually end up getting jumped in on or swept (swept because they move in just enough when I buffered). When I try playing footsies with step straight I usually eat the step kick unless I’m really far away.
