how do you effectively use f+mk as a poke to start off block strings? I’ve been trying to incorporate this move into my game more but it just seems to have quite a few startup frames compared to cr lp or cr lk.

The only time i see its value is when i’m in a footsie battle and i try to catch my opponent’s poke with it. Even then, i wonder if s hp, cr mp, cr mk aren’t better options. Just seems so situational to me. anyone care to show their use of this move? and if your opponent doesn’t fall for a frame trap, how do u follow up a blockstring to continue pressure?

You use f.mk when you know they’re intentionally delaying their poke/tech to avoid frame traps. If they are doing their tech/poke as soon as they come out of blockstun they will hit you. But that’s when you should be trapping with cr.mp xx lp MGB, s.hk xx lk ducking, or s.hp. f.mk also punishes people who don’t hit any buttons at all because you can just do it over and over and never get pushed out.

I like the way Marn uses a blocked f. MK to make the opponent guess high (overhead), low (cr. LK that can link off the f. MK if it hits as well) or throw.

ive been trying to put this into my game more but it seems i get crouch tech light kick or ill just get grabbed out of the overhead i hate grabs in this game

Yeah, only use overheads in blockstrings after you condition them not to press buttons during your strings.

Yeah, I go for throw or low more often than overhead since people online (ranked more specifically) love pressing buttons. There’s a very few times I snuck an overhead in and got away with it.

If you want to be fancy, you can meaty with it. This gives you some nice things since if you get a counter hit you get to land a good move that’ll lead into a big damage combo, if you just plain land it you can go into cr.jab and combo, and if they block you’re still plus 3 and can do some blockstring stuff. Just watch out for backdashing as I don’t know if it will hit.

I will say one thing though and it is that this move is very hard to meaty since it’s active for like 2 frames, so watch out.

Well if you plink this it’s no problem, but if not, you can practice it by linking crouch jabs into each other. If you can get the jabs to link, then all you have to do is delay that timing very slightly to link into st. roundhouse.

Dudley’s cr.lp -> s.hk link is the same as Ryu’s cr.lp -> cr.hp link frameswise.

Damn, that Ryu uppercut is fast.

the problem I have with the c.LP-s.HKxxEX MGB or duck upper or whatever

is that I dont know if i should either let go of the stick so it can go into neutral or if i should pull the stick back?

At first I used to go back but now I just go to neutral. Fucking shortcuts.

I put the stick at back when I hit :hk:. Never gotten a shortcut.
