Dual-Modding a PS2 and Xbox 360 Stick (Updated)

Dual modding the pcb’s will have zero affect on the 360 wireless headset. HOWEVER, 360 wireless headset are notorious for having problems even with first party controllers, and problems are frequently reporting with it and the madcatz common ground pcb’s. So if this is a big selling point for you, I would recommend you test out the headset with the controller you are going to use before you even open up the controller. If the headset works with the controller normally, it should work just fine hacked into a stick, even with another pad. If the headset doesn’t work with the controller before hacking, there is no way in hell it will work after hacking.

Ah cool, thanks

I new to making sticks. Is it possible to use this guide if I were making a 6 button x360 specific stick? Thanks

Sure. Most of this would still apply. You would just exclude the power wire and PS1 PCB. The ground would also go to the stick instead of the second controller.

Nice guide, it deserves to be sticked.

Also, do you think it can work in a different configuration, like a DC&GC/Wii?

I don’t see why not. You would need a common ground controller for each of those systems. I already use this on my Dreamcast with a PS2-DC adapter. I have an adapter for Gamecube as well but my GC is out in storage.

As far as i know, both controllers are common grounded so thats not a problem. Also, i see that the GC controller has 2 V lines, one for 3.3v and one for 5v, in this case and since the DC has a 5v only the bridge will be between the 5v of the DC and the 3.3v of the GC. Am i rigth? (in theory at least)

That sounds right. Hopefully Toodles will chime in with an answer.

It would be nice to compile a list of controllers that play nicely together. Can any of the geniuses help out with a rule of thumb on these?

With GC controllers, it is a little hard to say. I know it has both 5v and 3.3v, and I only use the 5v on my boards, but I don’t know for sure which one(s) are needed and used by the legit GC controllers. I would suggest trying to use just the 5v line, leaving the 3.3v disconnected, and seeing how well it works for you. If it doesn’t work, try the 3.3v line and leave the 5v disconnected and test again. If niether of those work for you, I don’t have an immediate answer for you except to get an MC Cthulhu.

Otherwise, just I can’t think of any pads that can’t be used this way as long as they are common ground.

Thanks for posting this! It was very helpful, the images are especially nice. I added a MadCatz 360 pad to my PS2 custom this weekend, and the 360 buttons kept grounding out and going nuts! Then I checked this thread and realized I needed to connect the two power leads on the pads. Thanks again!

How much would you charge to do this to my Hrap 2sa?

Post a picture (or pictures) of the inside. If it looks straightforward and you can supply the pads and pay for shipping both ways I wouldn’t really charge for labor. I need to take some more pictures of the process anyhow.

I would to get some more wire, another terminal strip and some quick disconnects. Once I see the stick I’ll let you know what that will cost.

Is this good enough?

which x360 pad should I get?

Yeah, that definitely helps.

Can you find a diagram or explanation of how the joystick connector works? Is there just the one connector that goes into the joystick? It looks like there’s 5 wires which I’m guessing is one for each direction and a fifth for the ground. Does it crimp down? Does Lizard Lick carry them?

Also what size are the quick disconnects? I know I can get those from Lizard Lick.

Is there a tutorial for it which shows has to swap in a different PCB (360 maybe?). I would imagine that would have enough information to get this done.

I wish I had one of those sticks. I’d just do it for you and mail you the PCBs so you could connect it.

thats what the basic wiring looks like for hrap2sa dual mod with a 360 pcb. you will have to modify the plastic cover that goes over the pcb so the wires can come out. you will also have to add another button for guide if you use up all the other buttons in conjunction with the hrap pcb. also you will have to figure a way for the 360 cord to come out.

fsckyle-can you post some picks of your stick, just want to see what it looks like.

this is the easiest 360 pad to hack right?

The wiring doesn’t look bad. Is there a guide that goes with that image? It looks like a Mad Catz PCB. I’d rather use a terminal strip for ease of swapping when the Xbox 720 etc. is out.

Can’t you wire Guide to Select? That’s what I did on my stick and what apparently a lot of others do.

I’m not too happy about drilling into plastic. Guess I’d need to pick up a Dremel for that.

Sure. I’m off work in a couple of hours. It’s just looks like any other SF Anniversary stick.

Please go to your local Gamestop and see if they have it. They sell them for $13 and people have seen them going for less. They keep going high on eBay which is annoying because I also wanted another to take pictures with.

The Mad Catz pad in the picture above should also work. I need to sort out which ones are common ground and if I can still buy one locally.

sorry, i have no guide and have no plans to make one but it should look self explanatory. before you take things apart just write down the color of the wire to what button it goes to and use multimeter to find the vcc and grounds.

its a madcatz gamepad pcb and they fit really well out of the way on the left side compared to a madcatz arcade stick pcb.

terminal strips are always useful especially if you want to future proof something.

you can use select for guide if you want. i was just saying if you matched up every other button you would have to add a new button for guide. me personally i use the back button alot for reset to center in vf5 dojo and like the option of having all buttons be able to be active.

the dremel is one of the most useful tools you can own when modifying sticks. for this mod you will have to cut through the case to be able to fit the ferrite ring on the usb cable to get to the plug to the back of the stick and then a small hole to fit the usb cable through on the back of the case. also what i was talking about before with the wiring coming out of the hrap pcb cover, you will need some kind of cutting tool for that.

anyways that should get you started and i’m sure if something doesn’t make sense now it will once you have the stick in front of you so good luck with that.

Thanks. I need to go pick up a Dremel and put a few holes in things.

Danomighty: If you can find a wiring diagram for the Hrap PCB then we’ll see what we can sort out. I’m too scared to play with your stick without one.

Also I’d be mapping Guide to Select if that’s a problem. Select would still be Select on the PS2. I don’t have the skills or the desire to butcher your case in attempt to add another button. I’ve yet to use the Back button on the 360 but apparently it’s useful on VF5.
