Ok. Did a 30 minute shooting last night and cropped some images.
An eraser/ charcoal figure drawing

I really enjoyed drawing like this. Will consider it for future pieces.[/details]
An update to my character

I’ve decided to use more realistic proportions in my comic style.[/details]
Foreshortening is certainly a headache at first because visualizing perspectives that are uncommon can be difficult to do. If you can, find a big mirror to study poses and foreshortened joints. My bathroom has a mirror that spans the entire wall.
Sorry for it being real light, but I only got a shitty phone camera. I tried just doing an outline and lightly filling it in, but it doesn’t look right to me.
If you have trouble with hands you always have handy references attached to the ends of your wrists. Those plus a mirror and/or a cellphone cam can usually get you started. Basic structures: the wedge/block/spatula of the palm, the egg shape for the base of the thumb, the “two-by-four” of the wrist; the phalanges of the fingers and thumb can be thought of variously as cylinders, blocks, or ball and rods (spheres for the knuckles and cylinders for each phalanx). Once you’ve figured out the basic measurements and proportions (the Anatomy, Gesture, and Character post above has some scans from Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist by Stephen Rogers Peck), then you can work on what the hand is doing, what it’s expressing, and what is its function, design, and storytelling purpose.
Preston Blair cartoon hands (draw a mitten then figure out the fingers and thumb):
Quick sketch/figure drawings/life drawings from a seminar from last month. One to five minutes each in pencil and/or ink.
(NSFW-ish due to nude figures)
Thanks a million for looking. I’m currently trying to wrap my brain around how light work and how to use tone and value to cast light and shadow on forms.
Yea, I probably should have just omitted any type of shading until I understand it better, but practice makes perfect. Will remember to keep it smooth and consistent next time.
Also will read up on the link later.
Also, as a reminder, if you guys are having trouble drawing characters, read up on Loomis’ books but remember they have a learning curve for each one. Fun with Pencils is stage 1 where as Figure Drawing is like, close to the last stage. Head to hands also teach you how to draw cute stuff, which will also reflect on those wanting to draw animu and mango stuff.
I employed some of the techniques from this guide out of sheer will (never read this guide until recently) but what really made a difference for me was attending seminars where I could draw with experienced artists.
I draw manga mostly, but I grew up drawing western style art, so in perspective, I like to draw Kill La Kill but I grew up on Sin City.
Time for practice was something else holding me back too, but the bible I’m making for my character has mostly been keeping me drawing
I want to draw cute things all day cause I’m gay like that. However, I’m actually trying to learn how to draw for a future project I’m working on. I have no social life so this works out fine for me.
Also, I never understood the whole “draw the way it looks and don’t call out what it is” kind of thing. Maybe I’m just retarded, but whenever I see an object, I tell myself “that’s the check, the mouth” etc etc and it seems to come out accurate. Only reason why I feel as though it comes out correct, is that my art tutors always tells me “good, that’s how it should look” or whatever. I dunno, I think it is cause I can’t comprehend said object, it allows me to focus on the object a lot easier.
Ok, I compiled a list of drawing exercise for those of you who don’t feel like posting your own work right now. I should’ve done this a long time ago. This way we can all improve by simply practicing a few techniques rather than drawing random things.
So basically it consist of practicing straight lines, drawing boxes in perspective, drawing “perfect” circles/ellipses and shading.
So here’s what I want you guys to do first… Freehand draw a number of different sized circles on a piece of paper, you’re objective is to draw a perfect circle with one stroke. On the same piece of paper draw as many straight lines as possible, with every line being longer than 10cm. If you’re interested in doing this please let me know so I can post more often… Also do me a favour and ignore the troll below, flag him if you need to but do not respond to his posts.
