Playing a Fighter right now (level 21), with a Ranger pawn.
This game is a blast to play so far. Combat system is amazing and I think sets the standard for Western-styled RPGs. It does a good job of not holding your hand and not being afraid to let your ass get kicked.
Because of this, the difficulty and the tactics involved in taking down mobs or the large monsters give an enormous sense of accomplishment. I had a real beast of a time trying to kill a Chimera while escorting some peddler. I managed to kill the snake and the goat, but it kept killing my mage pawn so I was barely doing any damage to the lion. And while that was going on, every so often, it would pounce on my escortee and maul him. Took me maybe 9 or 10 tries to get it right finally.
To be honest, those collected experiences alone more than make up for the relatively sparse story (and for all the Skyrim comparisons IGN makes, it wasn’t exactly as though any of the Elder Scrolls games have featured highly compelling characters or a tightly told story).
I actually kind of like the fact that your fast travel is restricted to Ferrystones since there is so much (so far anyway) to see and explore.
How I feel about skyrim?
Instead of being a game, it’s more of a spectacle.
I can equate it to cable:“A thousand things to do, but none of them actually fun.”
Oblivion was a blast, so was Morrowind, I love Elder Scrolls, but Skyrim was just ass.
The leveling was cool, but the story and it’s execution was ass, and the melee combat was as unsatisfying as ever.
I never felt rewarded because none of it was challenging.
And for all the money they spent on that shit, not an inch of it was creative, they would have been smart if they set up a shop on consoles that let them add in mods like the PC(A shop in the start of the game, you want a add on, if it’s on Be’s offical channel, it’s up for you to download), but they didn’t.
I think Skyrim is bad. Actually, I think the last three Elder Scrolls games are bad. They are just so boring. I can’t see how people stand to play those games. I feel like it was some mass conspiracy by game reviewers to say, “The Elder Scrolls games are 10/10,” and everyone just went along with it because they thought it would make them cool. It blows my mind that this series is a hit because banging my dick against a wall is more engaging than the combat in those games. The story is no better than any random teen fiction (in fact, most teen fiction is better written). That only leaves exploration, and considering how trash the rest of the game is…I’d be better off just watching an episode of Dora the Explorer.
Seriously, most ppl don’t know what it’s like to have some form of gaming OCD. I’ve started over at least 4 times trying to get the looks of my arisen/main pawn just right, also the fact that you’re required to choose both a name and a moniker for your characters gave me yet another thing to obsess over. Had the game for almost 3 days now and I still haven’t explored beyond Gran Soren because I’m trying to complete every single sidequest as they show up as well as purchase exactly one copy of every piece of armor available for my arisen/main pawn’s class. If you’re the type that likes to pick up every single item off the floor or destroy every single enemy in an area, this game is gonna be a nightmare…just saying, you’re gonna have to drop some of your usual gaming rituals/expectations when playing this game.
xbox GT: CA viren
Pawn: Cassandra
Class: Fighter (Lv.20 atm)
Rolled a double fighter team and so far things have been going smoothly. Currently having fun throwing enemies at her and seeing if she’ll juggle them, haha good times!
EDIT: oops, forgot to mention i’m playing the 360 version
Meh. You all have valid reasons but I’d have to say you’re in the smallest minority. This is a DD thread so I wont derail, but I think Skyrim deserves all the praise it gets. It sold a ton and I loved every second. Stuff like combat is unsatisfying, sure. But Executions and the like made it so much better, I dont think any other combat system would fit the game tbh.
Story 1: So I’m in Everfall going to investigate the not so nice presence that is being sensed and I lose against the boss, the Ogre. So I change my party around, making sure to grab some higher level Pawns. I go back down there and much like before we are barely scratching this guy but we are doing “ok”. At some point during the battle some crazy shit must have happened because me and my pawn start leveling up like we just beat the boss. And I’m like…
“Wait. Where IS the Ogre?!”
I run over to where he last was, about a couple pillars ahead and his body was nowhere to be seen. Some freaking way my party managed to make him fall to his death. Sadly if the Ogre had any item drops I must have missed them because it took us a minute to roll through some zombies before hitting the bottom. And there was nothing there. Sad face.
Story 2: This story is more of a warning. If you pick up the Quina mission DO NOT attempt the Everfall mission beforehand. After coming out of the dungeon the quest was freaking cancelled. I wish the game had more of a fair way of letting you know that a quest is in danger of being cancelled.
Also at the bottom of Everfall there is a hall that leads up a pair of stairs to some new room and possibly more. As soon as I went I got smacked pretty hard with a fire spell that almost killed me. Next thing you know harpies were swooping in. My party and I managed to kill a few of them and some fire throwing zombie thing and we got the hell our there. Whatever is in there must be super evil.
Skyrim is not bad, but merely “okay”. The fact that it gets praised as the greatest western RPG of the decade is just weird. Its an unpolished, glitchy, uninspired mess of a game. I could go on and on about why it’s bad, but that would need its own thread.
In other news. I threw the corpses of my enemies into trees to get apples. I am the best.
I am fucking loving this game. Fighting my way towards a light in the distance and hoping it’s a camp, meanwhile the dead are rising around me and wolves are howling in the distance.
I really like the overall feel of the game. Hearing something in the distance and wondering if you should investigate, looking up and thinking, “Oh fuck, it’s getting dark”, and so on. Kind of like Dark Souls and the campfires.
Yeah I never really understood the love for the Elder Scrolls games. The only reason I was kinda like “oh maybe I wanna get this game” was because everyone was talking about it and hyping it up.
The gameplay seems boring and stale, combat looks awful, and it just seems like work rather than fun.
I personally think that capcom has a sleeper hit on their hands. The game has plenty of faults but it’s still different enough from the pack and a lot of fun to boot. I think this is my first ever Medieval RPG this generation too (I’m not usually into RPGs because the combat feels too styling. I like being in control and this gives me all the control I could almost ever want. If this game were ultra bad ass I’d have Mass Effect 3 Kinect Controls to direct my Pawns.)
Has anyone else honestly had problems with not being able to automatically lock on to enemies? I think the reasoning behind not doing that was because they want you to have consequence for everything you do. Missing a special attack sucks for sure but it’s probably because you did it too soon or late and the enemy got away.
Yeah really enjoying this game too. It fixes all of the issues I had with Monster Hunter, which I didn’t even know where issues until I played this game.
Guess Im buying DD next year when it’s $20 and I’ve exhausted my current backlog. Seeing how everyone praises the combat and exploration piques my interest even though I’m sick of the medieval fantasy setting and I still think the art is ass.
Ha for me this game is way more conveniant. Both Monster Hunter 1 for the PSP and Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii for me had very strange ways of teaching you how to play the game in the early stages. AKA making you curse the game out for an egg hunting quest or for an unforgiving fishing quest early on in Tri.
Sure once you learned how to do all this stuff, it’s great. I still think there are better ways to introduce new players or people who mostly play fighting game and action games like me and come into pretty much everything else lost like a little kitten.
I was gearing up early on for these kinds of frustations in Dragon’s Dogma especially since it’s quest based and early on they are going to teach you how to play like the MH games. So far no frustations. Not that I didn’t die a bunch of times on quests already but it’s so far without all of the headaches.
Like I said, I didn’t have any beefs with MH until I played DD. There’s a much kinder / friendlier way to introduce someone to a new world. I hope if they make another MH (well if it comes to the US) they start thinking more along these lines.
This is all just my personal experience. I think the next following post will be “HA HA YOU HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE EGG HUNTING AND FISHING QUESTS IN MONSTER HUNTER YOU SUCK!” I love the internet. :lovin:
Ok so like I’m on the first escort mission listed in the Inn in Garen or whatever the Duke’s town is called. Man dude has to go QUITE the distance but I think I made a wrong turn somewhere. See…
My first time starting the quest I was heading back through the mountain pass and decided to make a turn towards the sea and as I started working my way down cliffs I see a Cyclops chilling in the river bed. I decide to fuck with him from afar since I’m a strider. I’m not doing a lot of damage so I decide to try to get closer but the long drop ends up killing me.
I get to this point again but this time heading around the cliffside of the coast instead of the mountain pass and I notice just enough of an outcropping for me and the party to land on. From there we launch our assault and kick the Cyclops ass. We continue our journey along the coast and then start making our way inland. I’m doing my best to follow the red circle on my mini map but well after night fall and deep into this new area I find myself way off course. My guy is still alive and so is my whole crew but after many lizard men bouts and a surprise fight with a Chimera I don’t know how much more of this shit I can take.
It’s very dark and there are only two people with lanterns.
I can’t go back… too far gone.
All I can do is soldier on (saving lives and killing things).
edit I think my problem with Gran Soren was I wasn’t hiring any good pawns to come with. I hired a couple of level 12s and we’ll see how far I can get.
double edit I started picking up shit and throwing them over to the bottom. In the process, I accidentally picked up my pawn and threw her over. I realized this as soon as I let go and her name popped up, lmao. I straight ran 2 of the rungs, past the orge completely, and all the way to the bottom, and managed to rez her on time. Only to be killed by those fire-breathing monsters in the bottom not a second later. =/
