Dragon's Dogma (From the director of DMC3)

Playing around with the demo some more, I decided to try some things out. Soloing the chimera is pretty awesome and requires you to concentrate a bit. If you through the first guy off the cliff behind you when you start you can just continue on solo. Just guarding the chimera, like DMC3/4 Royal Guard, is pretty awesome and gets you either a stagger or a knockdown on the Chimera. I only found out 2 combos if you delay the strikes like DMC (for both warrior and strider), though I’m hoping there will be more, if not I’m fine since there are a decent amount of skills.

Also having height and weight effect your character abilities is really neat. On neogaf people were saying that if you were fat, the griffin would have a harder team flying, and I tried it and it seemed to be true. If you are smaller, you have better stamina and easier to climb, but you don’t weigh down the monster at all. It’s especially hilarious to have 3 people climbing the griffin, and he only hovers like an inch off the ground. There is also a lot of loot in the countryside if you run around and some of it is not obvious, so you can pick up some branches and stuff that are not highlighted for torches.

I’ve decided to make the thief from D&D:Shadow over Mystara because I saw that video the assassin had where it looks like her grab. Really looking forward to this game.

When I played the demo I was in a hurry and couldn’t really play around with the mechanics. The fact that they are including things like just guard and other elements from action games makes me even more excited for this game. When I get more time I’m going to play the demo more thoroughly.

Definitely a day 1 buy for me.

Finally got around to playing the demo. I have two things to say.

Incredibly. Awesome.

When I climbed onto the Grififn the first time, and it took off, my jaw dropped. It was totally unexpected and I loved every second of it.

Is it possible to have no pawns at all? Or just a single pawn?

Wow. WOW! WHAT A HUGE WOW! Gosh if this game takes off and we get a sequel it is dying to have real 4 player co-op!

I have a feeling that Capcom would throw multiplayer at this in a heartbeat if it succeeds. This game feels like they are testing the waters a bit.

It’s Capcom guys.

If this game sells well they’re bound to make a Ultra Dragon’s Dogma Arisen Edition, complete with multiplayer.

And it’ll be the first expansion from Capcom that I’ll actually buy because this game is just awesome. Haven’t been so hyped for a game since forever.

Japanese devs trying to appeal to the western market.

I dunno why but whenever this art style is done, west or east, it just look ugly as hell. I always wonder why western themed games always have crappy hair (and faces but I feel you can eventually make an okay face). Just playing around with character creators shows this is evident, from Skyrim to Dark Souls. Though the character creator is okay but not that great in the game (it’s cool weight and height make a difference). Only character creators with decent hair is somehow in Korean-themed mmos for some reason. Bioware also can’t make hair if their life depended on it.

I’m not an expert but hair is generally considered the one of the hardest things to realistically create in a game next to AI and justifiably so since the technology doesn’t exist yet, sure there are some games that do it better than others but generally you can’t fault games for not having great hair or AI. Although that’s not a defense of them being as shitty as they usually are.

The D&D, LOTR, medieval, elves and magicky crap, etc whatever you want to call it type aesthetic has always been rooted in drab, muddy colors to reflect the era faithfully, that’s just how it is although I agree it generally doesn’t look as nice as something like Kingdom of Amalur, although that’s subjective I guess. I haven’t played Dragon Age 2 but BioWare said they really tried hard to completely revamp the art style to make it more unique and appealing and from the videos I’ve seen they’ve succeeded.

Anyways game looks okay, not great and in this modern era with so many developers bringing their A game okay isn’t good enough for my hard earned money. But who knows maybe it’ll be the next Skyrim (which I still haven’t played).

LMAO we think alike. LOL I was JUST thinkin that as soon as I saw Capcom. But it’ll be Turbo First, then Super, then Ultra XD

Skyrim is a turd. There is nothing good about it other than you haven’t spent your money on it yet.

I kind of dig the muddy, somewhat boring art style they have chosen for this. Its nice against the sea of over the top “epic” (and I use that term lightly) environments we see in games lately. Its overload to the point that simplistic style like this actually looks much more interesting. I don’t want or need giant skull shoulder pads that spew green fire. I just need some armor that’s practical and intimidating.

Yea I do think that explanation on hair does sound reasonable.

Anyone have any plans on their pawn yet? I was thinking we could eventually post up our pawns when the game comes out and try to lend it out so we get stuff back from them. You guys also hear about forgeries and stuff? People can be dicks and send forgeries of items back with the pawn, so if you used a teleport stone and then found out it was a fake, then you might be shit out of luck. Interestingly enough you can forge quest items and hand it to quest givers, though they say it might have consequences. They also said that you have an item that can revive npcs, and one of the directors said that you can assassinate a person for a quest, then bring them back.

I like how modest the game is. It doesn’t have this massive marketing campaign behind it, and its a little wonky. Stuff doesn’t always look right and it give it this really video gamey feel. I love it.

Asynchronous co-op Ur-Dragon Slaying! We all get a super Dragon to take down, whittling away at its health until the final blow is given and we reap the benefits (with the final blow giver getting a big reward). I look forward to working on this and more monsters with you guys in the future.

Anyone picking this up at midnight?

It’s in teh mail for me.

Oh wait, this comes out tomorrow? Totally lost track of time.

Awesome!

I’m picking it up today. If anyone’s on XBL, send me a friend request, my gamertag = Biggzy

Ha, what a joke. I swear to God they were playing Skyrim while writing this review, and must have gotten confused.

http://www.siliconera.com/2012/05/21/dragons-dogma-playtest-dragons-may-cry/ The best review that’s not a review. This person actually gets the DMC connections. I could feel something like that being possibly from the demo. Game isn’t about grinding to win it’s about grinding to be good at playing it to win.
