Any fantasy series that goes beyond 7 or 8 books is utter trash IMO. Wheel of time was awful, Redwall became mediocore, did Dragonlance maintain?
I think fantasy writers just go insane and start living in whatever fictional world they created. That and they love money so they crank those suckers out.
EDIT: are the people making the I don’t read book jokes serious? Damn that’s some ignorant shit. USE YOUR BRAINS.
THe books were good until Weis and Hickman themselves decided to fuck us by killing people in stupid ways, I dunno about any of the books they didnt write.
ahhhh Margaret Weiss… Did anyone read “The Death Gate Cycle”? She wrote that along with Tracy Hickman… Great series of books.
I never read Dragonlance myself, but I loved the PC games from way back… SSI made it I believe (who made ALL the awesome D&D games as well, back in the DOS days… I loved those, too.)
Gold Box:
Champions of Krynn
DeathKnights of Krynn
The Dark Queen of Krynn
I think I still have this collecting dust somewhere at my parents house. You can also download it on some Abandonware sites, if you do a simple google search. These are the reasons I became such a huge RPG fanatic and FF fanatic… Honestly, I’d much prefer these types of games. I still have never beaten Pools of Darkness Maybe ill fire that back up this weekend…
(Shit maybe a old school D&D Dos Games thread should exist?..)
Last book I read was Dragon of a Vanished Moon. I love the main books by W&H. The rest of the series? Fuck it. Most of it isn’t worth the paper it was printed on. Even if you don’t care about continuity, if the book is canon/not canon? So much crap to wade through, and most of it was crap. So I stopped bothering to read DL not written by W&H.
After Vanished Moon comes The Dark Disciple Trilogy (Amber and x). You should read the first two and wait for the 3rd one coming out in 3 months. It pick ups where War of Souls left off. Yeah I agree with you that W&H books are to George Lucas’ 6 Star Wars movies as any other Dragonlance books written by different authors are to the Star Wars books, although I did like The Wizard’s Conclave which takes place around the same time as The Dark Disciple. I can’ wait for Dalamar and Nuitari have a face to face conversion in Amber and Blood.
#01 Dragons of Autumn Twilight #02 Dragons of Winter Night #03 Dragons of Spring Dawning #04 Time of the Twins #05 War of the Twins #06 Test of the Twins #07 The Second Generation #08 Dragons of Summer Flame #09 Dragons of a Fallen Sun #10 Dragons of a Lost Star #11 Dragons of a Vanished Moon #12 Amber and Ashes #13 Amber and Iron #14 Amber and Blood (Released in May 2008)
prequel books that happens before Dragons of Autumn Twilight:
#01 The Soulforge #02 Brothers in Arms
Pretty much the prequels tell you how Raistlin became Raistlin. It shows him as a child, etc. similar to Anakin in the prequel series except that Raistlin owns Anakin for free.
Read them up to War of Souls. Have Dwarven dpeths sitting here but haven’t cracked it open yet. Man, the movie was a real let down. God that shit looked terrible. I do love me some DL though. Tasslehoff owns.
Dragonlance really fell off after summer flame. I read every book, seriously all of them, up through the release of summer flame, and I liked them all. The post “gods leaving” world is terrible. I just couldn’t get into those later books, especially with palin leading the way.
After coming so far with the series, and the characters, reading summer flame was the ultimate close to their adventures.
favorite moment in summer flame

when tanis is getting ready for the big battle and the one knight asks him to stay, and he says that he already made up his mind long ago when he said “we’ll go out through the kitchen” great stuff right there [/details]
i read the elven exiles trilogy a while back. its about how gilthas, now the elven king of the merged silvanesti and qualinost elves, tries to find a home for his people. it was fucking garbage. they took the characters of gilthas and the lioness, made them into idiots, and ruined what could have been an interesting storyline.
the worst part about the trilogy was how characters like the lioness would be shocked by displays of magic. in one instance, she sees a priestess pass her hand through an object and thinks its an illusion. IN A FANTASY WORLD WHERE PEOPLE USE MAGIC ALL THE TIME, IT WOULDNT BE A BIG DEAL TO SEE MAGIC, YET THESE CHARACTERS ACT LIKE THEY’VE NEVER SEEN MAGIC IN THEIR ENTIRE LIFE.
in another part of the trilogy, a bounty hunter WHO SPECIALIZES IN CATCHING WIZARDS is caught off guard by a wizard, gets trapped by a spell and is almost slain. the book says: “after that incident, he would never underestimate a wizard again”. ARE YOU JOKING ME? A WIZARD BOUNTY HUNTER WOULD KNOW HOW POWERFUL WIZARDS ARE.
its like the authors dont realize that they are writing in a fantasy setting. a fantasy setting where souls were walking the earth, where huge gigantic dragons were flying around, and where a god was recently slain. AND YET PEOPLE ARE STILL SHOCKED BY DISPLAYS OF MAGIC.
The 13 books is the accurate timeline of the books plus the 2 prequal books (Raistlin Chronicles)
Order of the trilogies
Chronicles Trilogy
Legends Trilogy
Second Generation
Summer Flame
War of Souls Trilogy
The Dark Disciple Trilogy
Palin isn’t in charge of anything anymore, he’s pretty much retired and gave up magic. You should read War of Souls trilogy and The Dark Disciple trilogy. It gets better with The Dark Disciple, but skipping War of Souls will keep you in the dark about the storyline. So you gotta read War of Souls first. Taz is in it for a little bit…
I bought the chronicles trilogy. It’s really good so far even though it reminds me a hell of a lot of LOTR. Thanks for the recommendation peoples…!!! <3
Finished off at Vanished Moon a couple of years ago. Reading through the Dune series right now.
How’s the new trilogy? I really hated Mina in the The War of Souls series… don’t know why I would want to read about her for 3 more books. :wonder:
And Soulforge was the best DL book period. (With Summer Flame coming in a close second)
