I’ve had a topic that’s been in the back of my head every time I’ve gotten even slightly hype for this game. I’m a huge DBZ fan and the series alone got me into anime/manga. I am in no way hating on this game, I have a pre-order placed and I’m heavily excited to play it, but I still have qualms I’d like to discuss.
So lets take a quick blast to the past and reminisce old games such as Tenkaichi 3, Budokai 3, Super Dragon Ball Z, Shin Budokai and a couple other fun titles. They were some fun games sure, but each of them suffered from the obvious signs of rushed development. I mean this in terms of the “meat and potatoes” of the game, it had it’s general concepts worked out in the story mode and challenge/trial types modes but none of them had real depth to them, they were very bare-boned and basic. Hell I’ll even say Tenkaichi 3’s combat system was a lucky fluke and that it’s pretty piss poor as a game anyways, it just caters towards fast-paced easy action, Raging Blast 1/2 at least built upon the structure of those games and finely tuned the system a little bit. I’ll get onto my point anyway.
Will Xenoverse be another victim of rushed development?
In my humble opinion, yes.
With an already delayed release date and generally slow progress in development shown, I refuse to believe this game will be able to be called a proper finished product on release. Watching multiple DBZ content creators on YouTube and then sifting through the comments section just shows me a lot of bias opinions on the entire matter; example -
“This game is going to be bad” < Commenter 1, has no backing for his statement but we’re all entitled to opinions, right?
“Don’t say that until it’s released it’s only in beta!” < Commenter 2, now normally I would agree depending on what was wrong with said title, if it was an extreme fuck-up beta > final version probably wouldn’t change something drastic. My main problem with this is that it was a mere 2 months away from release when “Beta footage” was being shown. A game in beta, two months away from release, I haven’t ever heard of something like this before and this is where I began to question this games development. Surely a game this close to release would be in it’s polishing stages with a final build ready for mass production, right? I’m no game development aficionado but things like this seem questionable at the least.
The problems with rushed development/underwhelming end products for this title -
Now if you watch through a couple of the advertisements they REALLY try to sell you on the new “Create a character, take control of the DBZ timeline” selling point, which is entirely reasonable considering it’s their unique selling point and it’s what’s really going to drive sales for this game. But is it really going to be what they make it out to be?
“TAKE CONTROL OF THE DBZ TIMELINE!”
So, in what scenarios is this applicable, and to what levels? Can we for instance have Goku die from the beginning and not have him resurrected to completely fuck up the storyline, or is it going to be Mass Effect 3 esque where all of our decisions lead to a boring A, B, C ending with completely no consequences for your choices throughout the campaign whatsoever.
Cell Saga -
I’ll use this as an example, let’s use the fight between Goku and Cell and create two varying scenarios of what I would like the game to be like, compared to what the game will PROBABLY be like.
Goku fights Cell, refuses to forfeit and continues to ascend to an SSJ2 remaining alive into the Buu Saga thus changing the timeline quite dramatically.
Goku loses to Cell, but instead of choosing Gohan your character and Vegeta fight Cell, Vegeta then ascends/becomes stronger than the other Z-Warriors, changing his character development from the original series where he quits his life as a warrior.
^ The above states two pretty decent outcomes that are differing from the original story. And even though Toriyama probably doesn’t want his story to be changed or touched, A ) He had that ship sail when he allowed the release of GT B ) This is one of the only remaining ways to create an interesting campaign for the DBZ games
Now, onto what the game will probably be like,
Goku loses to Cell, allows Gohan to fight Cell and he continues to ascend to an SSJ2 just like the series. Cell then gets this whole “dark” power-up with the red eyes and whatnot and your character and Gohan fight Cell to defeat his dark powered up state. The end. No differing timeline at all.
The main point I’m attempting to make is that I genuinely believe this game will not be able to live around the hype it has created for me and many other fans, and even though it’s promising an interchangeable storyline where your character can change historic moments in the series, it’ll probably just be the iconic fights with your character taking part in them, which to me seems underwhelming.
When considering a majority of fans in the YouTube comment sections look very young and impressionable, I think it may hit them the hardest. I’m wondering if anybody else is having similar thoughts about this game being rushed.
