Don's Arcade aka Astro City: Torrance/Carson Fridays 8pm-3am

That about sums it up from my perspective.

It’s still a terrible way of looking at it. You can’t look at the top and say that it’s too hard, you need to look at your own competition.
Bowling is too hard because you have to learn how to spin the ball to get strikes.
Football is too hard because you have to memorize a playbook.
Chess is too hard because you have to memorize 200000 games.

But people still play across all skill levels.

everything requires fundamentals. fighting games break down to the following.
-hit them
-don’t get hit

it’s just a matter of how to do them more efficiently. you don’t NEED parrying, all you need to do is be better than the guy you’re playing against.

it really depends on the person but generally i get bored if i 100-0 someone. it’s not fun because i’m not being challenged or getting better. i’ve left arcades in the middle of a run when i’m destroying people. when jason first started playing sf4 i would 20-0 him and i would refuse to play him because it was so boring.

obviously times have changed

I guess the same applies with Call of Duty.

I’m just gonna put 4 set ups of Call of Duty next week since it’s all the same thing anyway.

IMO, a good fighting game can be defined as a game that challenges the player intellectually. If you aren’t thinking constantly, than it’s a waste of time. The problem with this generations game play is they don’t like to think. Everything needs to be dumbed down for them to casually enjoy the game they are playing. This is very apparent with MVC3 and their ‘simple’ mode. Same can be said with SF4 with the auto correct system, but to a lesser degree. More people will play MVC3 because the game requires no thinking. SF4 is a superior game to MCV3 because of this.

Although I dislike SF4, I can see people thinking about set ups and trying to bait their opponents into doing things. The basic fundamentals of the SF series can be seen in SF4, but the fundamentals that MVC2 players saw with MVC2 simply aren’t there in MVC3.

I also agree with Joe when it comes to going 100-0. It’s boring and when things like this happen, I feel like I am getting worse because I am not being challenged. If anything, I would rather be on the 0 side of the 100-0 match because I can take that time to try and analyze why I didn’t win a single game. I know that when I get to play other people who are interested in 3s, I get more joy trying to help them with the basic fundamentals of the game. There is always something to learn in 3s too. I’ve been playing the game for 8 years and am still learning things about this game. Granted I think that what I am learning is a little advanced for casual players to understand, but it is something that can carry over into the other SF games (minus ST for some things).

Bottom line, I think people don’t like games like 3s for the simple fact that they have to think a lot more than in most other fighting games. They need everything to be dumbed down in order to even want to try to play the game. This concept goes along with why nobody plays Guilty Gear too. It’s just too advanced for them.

yeah
most of the strategy of call of duty comes from positioning, as first strike = first kill, it’s not about aim as much although it’s still relatively important. there’s skill in there, believe it or not.

the problems with call of duty are the slippery slope (winners get things that make them win more), the horrible netcode making it hard to play when what you see is different than how the game is processed, and grenades…

whenever i’m bored i like to think about game design.

I dunno about you guys, but I played Black Ops for about a week before I went to sell it to a friend. I lost about 15 bucks in the process, but I couldn’t stand it. I got no problem with winners getting the kill streak packages, it’s just I honestly have no patience at all when it comes to online games, especially when it comes to really, really stupid hit detection.

It’s a wonder I still play World of Warcraft given my tolerance for online bullshit, but hey, it’s an addiction.

I always thought the genius in Ono’s marketing schemes for SF4 were really just to gain the audiences trust, only to present it again and in the nice black and red ink packaging the audience wanted to see the first time around. Ew, I can see pixels on a game that I am playing on my xbox/ps3. Dislike. If they can’t even draw something that’ll hold up to the test of my 1080p TV, a balanced fighting game, bawww parry, is definitely out of their reach.

Will most likely be here on friday, but will most likely be showing up by myself. Can’t wait to get some theory fighter going with some of you dudes.

Is there any 3s at all or will I have to concede to SSF4 and mnc3 for the time being?

Oh Lenin I’m sorry there won’t be a gathering tomorrow due to my Grandpa’s funeral.

3S is still played but only if ppl here play it. Before it had to compete with SSF4 now it has to compete with MVC3 and SSF4. I’m wondering what will happen once 3S goes online. But that’s a long time from now.

i hate call of duty, it’s a shitty game and i don’t see why people keep playing it, i hope it dies because activision’s getting greedy and making it subscription-based multiplayer for future games

that doesn’t mean people can’t compete in it though.

“Hate” is such a strong word Joe. But I feel your pain.

I myself am not a COD fan but I totally understand it’s broad appeal. I mean it’s super popular. Isn’t it the first video game to make a billion dollars.

From my point of view, the new simplified Capcom fighting games is where the action is now. You can’t be on an island and just play ST, 3S, or even T6 anymore. The best you can do is use the popular games as a gateway and try to lure them into games like 3S. Of course T6 is different. But the following for it here (my arcade) is basically non existent. Don’t get me wrong I want majority to play 3S here but trying to do that today is beating a dead horse.

So what I can do now is just inspire competition at my place the best way I can or know for these new games. I want it to be fun but not easy.

strong emotions require strong words
i understand its appeal but it’s still a terrible game

as i’ve been trying to say, the mindset of “3s is too hard” is such a terrible mindset to have.

the gateway thing never works because they don’t want to put the time in. they’ll say “3s is too hard, 4 is easy for me to play” but they spend 2 hours on 3s and 400 on 4. gee i wonder why 4 seems easy, maybe because they played it so much and continue to do so. and then they also have these broken expectations that they deserve to be good at 3s because they’re good at 4, and it just doesn’t work that way, they’re different games. so they get frustrated when they lose to other beginners.

Sigh Joe wants to run circles with me:p. If you play games like SSF4 and MVC3 that gives you a lot of things on a silver platter then it’s only logical that 3S is gonna seem hard. To you a game being too hard to learn might be a terrible mindset but to me if your starting point into fighting games is MVC3 and SSF4 it’s not that far fetched of an attitude.

A lot of people at my place and Alex arcade tell me the main reason why they don’t play 3S is because it’s too hard. Not everyone is not intellectual and sophisticated like you so this is the reason they give me.

But I respect your opinions because you do care and you have standards. I like reading your posts:)

So I want to ask you this: How do you feel about MVC3 now?

yeah. and like i’ve been saying i think their reason is bogus and they’re just lazy.

put in time, you get better, regardless of what game it is. it’s only hard because they don’t put in time.

i’ve only played it for like 3 hours, including an hour against my bro and we were laughably bad. it seems fine for now, i’ve always had problems with muscle memory and it takes me a few days to get combos down, and i don’t even know what the “good combos” are. i haven’t been watching videos or whatever so i don’t know what’s going on at the top level.

i think for now, obviously mvc2 has 10 years of history and strategy development so at this point it looks like a more complex game, i think it’ll be a while for mvc3 to be figured out.

i do think mvc3 looks like crap though.
