Don's Arcade aka Astro City: Torrance/Carson Fridays 8pm-3am

What character does he main?

Alex and Urien. His Urien is super textbook, but his footsies game is a bit rough around the edges. Metric and Tenren give me a far harder time by comparison.

With all due respect to Gootecks, he has lost a few steps in his 3s game. He’s a great player, but it’s simply been too long since he’s played consistently against other good players. As far as uriens go, you should aim to beat Nice Guy Mark, Kazzy and Pyro. Once you can beat their uriens you will know that you have stepped up your game significantly. Also, whenever you’re not going to Don’s, go to Japan arcade! That’s where all the competition is going now

Oh Japan Arcade is the new stomping grounds for 3S? If this is true, this is good to know. Trying to have the patience to get through this month and some of next with house construction without killing myself to not play my fighting game collection to level up, and school starting up, too. All in all, just gonna have a rough start getting off the ground for a bit, SCR was pretty amazing at the new blood showing their faces and their abilities all around.

But Mio is right. Gootecks in his prime is a different beast than what you’d be playing now. Pyro’s Urien is a whole different beast. Then again, Pyro playing anyone is a whole different beast. I remember the last time I went to Super, I threw money at the machine till I could take out his Akuma with Alex, and barely got away with it because of a mistake he made. His Urien came out, and I walked away after a few more games. That’s a goal you should hit up. :]

I’ll set my sights on Nice Guy Mark, Kazzy, and Pyro then, Mio. Kane wants me to head down to Japan Arcade again since everyone else plays there now. I’m dumping 40 hours+ a week in this game just to train, and even now I’m starting to get to a point where only a handful of people on GGPO can consistently beat me (they know who they are). I also want to play Dae. I heard he’s stupid good.

… People take GGPO seriously?

Most of the comp on it is bad, and even some of the regulars aren’t very good once their gimmicks stop working. There are some really strong high level players on there like Nica KO, but I honestly prefer playing offline; GGPO is really only good for match up experience. That’s kind of the problem in onto itself: you either live in Japan or SoCal, or you don’t play 3s. Most guys hardly know the metagame, so yeah, GGPO is kind of free like that, BUT…it’s better than nothing.

I couldn’t take GGPO seriously when I tried it, and I couldn’t put my finger on why. With the way things have been turning out in the scenes for SF4, MVC3, and now Tekken, I shouldn’t really be knocking against online play as much as I have. It really is good training experience now, maybe not be the “best” but when the “best” involves you having to live in the right area, well, online is a good second place.

Is Apology Man a new face?

Does anyone know if he got good practicing in isolation or did he associate with the top players of his area. I heard he’s from Nor Cal.

And is it true that East Coast owns in UMVC3?

I know he played at teh Game Center in San Mateo. hence teh GC | ApologyMan, wif teh Game Center / [DacidzBROz / FlaccidzBROz] crewz. He wuz animehz animehz playerz. Played teh BLAZGreenz [ShglBMX & mebbez Danderz favoritez gheymez ;)] and maybe even P4.

He slayethz many a top playerz to top 4z, left manyz in hiz wakez.

SFxT: Obviously this game is a big time flop.

But there is a cult following for it out there of players who still defend this game. I think that’s interesting and I’m wondering what value they see in this game.

Any guesses?

But Capcom is trying so damn hard to make it a success. I almost feel bad for them. It’s like they’re trying to finish the game that they accidentally released in its beta stage, and they’re patching the shit out of it to make it playable.

I think people like it because of the characters and cool combos. I can’t see any other reason to like the game. It has way too many damn colors, it’s boring to play and boring to watch.

And there are no footsies. There are hit confirms, mixups, option-selects. That’s it. I don’t understand why SFxT think they have good footsies while playing that game. You hit a button, you hit the next button higher in strength, and if it hits you finish the combo, if not you try again. That’s not footsies.

SFxT is basically Capcom’s Diablo 3. Released too soon, and they patching it up to fix the mistakes. But ye damage has been done, so now we wait for the next expansion of devil slaying. or in this case, when SFxT 2013 comes out. It’s great to see the cross over finally happen, but I remember one comparison that stuck in my head for a good while, the Tekken character’s just feel more like brand new Capcom characters. One thing I think people like about it is actually the combos. Some of them look like they belong in Marvel. SF + Marvel combos? SURE WHY NOT.

I’m more interested in seeing how Namco does the Tekken characters in their version.

I heard a lot of CVS2 players I know and some players who placed high in tournaments like AE and UMVC3 in the past really like this game.

Also is the 2013 patch gonna finally live up to the game Capcom intended? Or is it just hype again? A lot of ppl are promoting this.

I just found out right now that Elena was in SFxT lol. Was she a dlc or was she always there lol.

If they do make a AE 2013 I do hope they cut and paste Elena, Poison, and Rolento.

Even D3 had more polish than SFxT on release day imo. Hopefully they don’t fuck it up for Heart of the Swarm. I’m not even big on RTS games, I’m terrible at them, but I love the single player and story.

It’s not a lot of people promoting. Capcom is promoting the shit out of it, and in turn, they’re paying others to promote the shit out of it. For God sakes, they added a CUSTOMIZED CAR as their 1st place prize in SFxT to try and get people to play the game. They’ve been putting out trailers non-stop everywhere, and they’re most certainly convincing TOs to have SFxT as a main tournament game, no doubt as part of sponsorship deals.

Think about it. LevelupLive doesn’t even run SFxT in its tournaments anymore, and yet somehow it’s a main game at SCR. Huh, makes you wonder. SFxT got mad hate at Evo last year and yet somehow it’s magically returned along with a million other games. Capcom is trying REALLY hard to push SFxT as a competitive mainstay, and only time will tell if their efforts will work out.

P.S. I was actually kind of hype for My Little Pony fighting game thing that was winning in the polls. lol. That shit would be hilarious. Unfortunately Evo organizers pretty much fucked that up, so now we’ll most likely see Smash Brothers Melee. I don’t even have anything against the game personally, but it’s players are fucking weird and way too socially awkward.

IMO sadly it’s becoming more about money and less about community. I shouldn’t be saying this outloud but it seems like major tournament organizers are becoming puppets of the video game companies. But we all need money I guess.

And that’s why I’m letting El Trouble borrow my Supergun all the way up till EVO so he can run as many ST tourneys as possible up till EVO. You’re one of the few tourney organizers who does it for the love of the game. And plus we need all the help we can get to keep ST alive.

Speak your piece. We’re all thinking the same thing. The more money gets into the scene, the more it dictates where our community is going to evolve. And this is most always a bad thing. Look at hip hop in its current state of affairs. They’re probably the prime example of what happens when you take a grass roots culture and inject money into it. You get Lil Wayne.

Oh and believe me, it’s being put to good use Don. Mucho thanks as always. I’m just a dude making plans, but your setup actually makes those plans possible, so most definitely without your support, the socal ST scene wouldn’t have consistent setups to play on.

In fact, your supergun setup was used exclusively for the top 8 matches. Valle even mentioned that playing on CRTs allowed to play even better, since he could react faster and his inputs were being read quicker. But don’t take my word for it, check out some of the sick matches that were being played on your supergun:
