I might skip SoCal Regionals this year. I donât really care for the 3s side tourney honestly, and my work is starting to pile up from pushing everything back for weeks. I went with Alex last year, but I havenât talked to him in weeks. Heck, does Alex even play anything anymore?
Ya I havenât seen ALAX in a while. Hopefully heâll be back but he told me heâs been losing interest in playing fighting games. Maybe heâs just getting away from it for a while and then heâll be back. Wish him luck in what ever he does though. Heâs a cool guy.
Iâm having a gathering tomorrow. Still in the Big House. Ya I know So Cal Reg is tomorrow but Iâll still hold my gathering since I donât know if its the last one.

I just got back from a secret trip from Vegas and Iâm actually impressed with Insert Coins. Itâs the only place in Vegas that has a 3S cabinet (along with a CVS2 cabinet and Hyper Fighting).
Iâll tell you why later. Look forward to a long posts later tonight lol.
So yes I went to Insert Coins this past week and I was kinda impressed. I mean it was ok but the idea of it impressed me. The whole idea of it being a arcade, bar, and lounge was cool. Granted there were only three fighting games: Hyper Fighting, CVS2, and Third Strike (And they were all in ok cabinets) but the vibe and the atmosphere gave it a more âmatureâ setting for gaming. The place had class.
And it made me think of the FGC and how a place like Insert Coins if put in the right place could bring out the âmaturityâ in the FGC.
When I think of the FGC community, generally speaking, I think of two things or two images. The first is this negative image of the unwashed masses who are immature, loud, obnoxious, cheap, and just a bunch of âbroke losersâ with no manners and class. The other image is positive: I see a bunch of dedicated chess masters who have a passion and a dedication and competitiveness to the games they play. And who are also trying to make a name for themselves. Of course these are two extremes and the FGC is more diverse than that.
The thing about the FGC community today is that a lot of it is all about fame and notoriety. Especially with the UMVC3 crowd which is the most important crowd. They want the reputation of being good. They want the glamor. They want the money. When you hold gatherings now, itâs only legit if you stream. They want to be âcoolâ and seen.
Iâm not saying this as bad things but as good things that the FGC should work with.
When I went to Insert Coins, I saw it as this cool chic place to play video games. If you go on their fb website the pics there project this âglamorousâ place with a lot of pretty girls who drink and play video games. I was thinking that since So Cal UMVC3 players think theyâre already âHollywoodâ, a place like Insert Coins with its drinks, video games, and djâs should exist here and it should be the Mecca for the FGC where you can hold casuals and tournaments. It would take the FGC community from a scrub setting like a arcade and put it in a more sexy glamorous mature setting of a bar arcade lounge. It could be streamed for the world to see with a lot of girls walking around along with the elite players. And the elite players would eat it up because theyâre already Hollywood. It would be a place where all the elite players would hang out and other people would want to hang because there would be the best comp and a lot of girls hanging out and drinking alcohol.
Basically it would be my garage and my drunk neighbors garage put together lol. The reason why my drunk neighbor has all these girls in his garage is because he has all this alcohol and a disco ball and a strobe light. Basically all you need is alcohol, a DJ playing music, games, and dark lighting just like Japanese arcades.
The reason why I thought of this when I went to Insert Coins is because I think the FGC needs to mature a little and it all begins with the venue. If we can have an environment thatâs cool and chic like Insert Coins. It plays into what the FGC is all about today. They want the glamor, the fame, the hype, the image, and maybe we should just give it to them. It should be a hard place to get in. It should feel exclusive and hip. The culture is ready for it: Geek Chic.
Itâs like Starbucks: Theyâre not selling you a cup of coffee, theyâre selling you a cup of culture. Imagine if we had the major weekly tournaments in So Cal in a place like Insert Coins. All Iâm saying is dress it up better a little. Itâs all about the Spectacle. An arcade isnât sexy enough for this new fame seeking FGC. Make the place desirable to go to so players feel like theyâre in a movie.
Well these are just my thoughts and the meaning I extracted after I went to Insert Coins.

I donât even trust half of the FGC when theyâre not sober. And wasnât the last time a DJ was involved at an event a complete bust for the DJ? I canât remember the event, but I remember reading that the room set for the DJ or whatever was just completely dead.
The DJâs is just there for background music and to create a disassociation and atmosphere. I think FGC players (the older ones who are also the better players) are getting older and they need a more mature setting to play in. If we treat them like adults maybe the community as a whole will mature a little bit. A good number of known players have kids so a lot of them have grow up. If the older top players are mature than maybe the younger players will follow. And younger people are trendy and hip anyways so they like anything that seems cool. Regardless people are gonna want to go to a place to escape and usually itâs a cool and fun place.
Well you donât know if its actually there. But I think it will work, especially with all the arcades dying. The alcohol will pay for the place. Itâs post modern America: where image is everything and everyone thinks theyâre cool. So to create a lounge where all the âcool top players playâ might work in this day and age.

I am just worried about the location that it is in.
Part of the problem with arcades dying had to deal with the locals; some arcades were just straight hood. My brother used to live around the neighborhood of Pak Mann Arcade in Pasadena and he told me that it attracted the wrong crowd. Imagine if alcohol was involved? I have it hard enough as it is playing at the local laundromat, homeboys would stab a dude if they lost.
I can see a location like this working out in a spot like Hollywood, but I doubt it would be anywhere near the 105 freeway :lol:
There will always be that element of danger but isnât that the exciting part? That you go to a place because its perceived as being a little dangerous?
Honestly though in this day and age I donât think the video game crowds are the same as in Pac man arcade in Pasadena. I donât think the arcade crowd of World Warrior really exist. The culture today is more geekier and anime for lack of a better term lol. I donât think itâs that bad anymore IMO.
Youâre also saying that people will go to a place because itâs cool and for them to escape, then you also say theyâll go, too, because itâs a place perceived as dangerous. No, I really, really doubt ANYONE in the FGC would go to a place that could be dangerous as a place to go escape. You want an escape, you go where you can be comfortable, not some place where youâll be at risk of getting in a fight with some stupid drunk kid in the FGC.
And letâs be honest. We have a LOT of stupid kids in the FGC already, we donât need them getting drunk or even buzzed.
All Iâm just saying when people go out they want to have adventure. They go out to break away from the mundane. They want the danger, escape, coolness, hipness, fantasy, excitement, euphoria, etc. Itâs the reason why people go to the movie theatre. They want to experience an exotic place and maybe get buzzed a little bit. Like a rave.
It should be a place where the âwhoâs whoâ of the FGC community hangout where reputations are created and destroyed. Because thatâs what the FGC community is really all about these days: Gaining a reputation off of the âstar systemâ of UMVC3 players. Thatâs where the fun is.
Itâll be like the WWE: A spectacle. Whatâs the difference between indie wrestling and the WWE? The spectacle.
I donât know what movie theaterâs you go to, but I sure as hell donât go to a theater for the DANGER of it all. I go for entertainment, crappy food, and time to kill. Theaterâs havenât been cool since⌠Since Limp Bizkit, I dunno, but a long ass time ago. Though Iâd go more if I could buy alcohol legally there, I donât wanna sneak any more crap in than I am / have already. LOL.

Heh, I just played a few matches with Cruise. I was able to consistently beat him with Ibuki. Oh. My. God. I am ready to body Gootecks for sure now. Also, you were right, Karafail, Cruise is definitely one of those execution focused players if anything else. Good reads and baits cripple his game quite a bit once you know what to look for.
