Does hype do more harm than good for games

Alot of times I come to these type of threads I always see that SFXT is thrown around like some abominable trash game by default; but the reasons ppl give for it being trash are shallow, highly subjective, and ignorant reasons based on kneejerk reactions. It always amazes me when I see one guy say “SFXT is trash who would play this?” but then while sayin that he’s playing a game like marvel or AE…I’m just like O.o

Anyways on topic yess I hate this hype crap when it includes stupid spectators.
Its like games now have to be spectator friendly to even be considered good, and stream monsters only worsen that disease

Well that’s the thing…this really all comes down to games that aren’t even fighting games.

I mean if we are judging this by what is “spectator friendly”, then fighting games should really be getting stomped on by Starcraft, LOL and FPS’s all day everyday. Yet not everyone obviously agrees they are the most interesting games to watch. What makes a game interesting to watch on stream is just simply clicking with how the game works and the top players in the scene.

Stream monsters are just a VERY VISUAL, VOCAL form of who have been making the most money for video games since the beginning of video games. Get used to it. What got me into fighting games was more or less mashing on electricity and lightning legs in SF2 and even when fighting games being played online was more of regularity all I really did was just mash on normals and do special moves occasionally. It was only until getting into the fighting game scene back in 2005/6 did I really start playing fighting games for anything pertinent to the highest level of play.

The small guys keep our games alive like Arturo said and pretty much everyone here started out as the small guy who just caught on to something very basic that most likely had nothing to do with high level play.

Good question. Matters on the game. SF4 and SSF4 was hyped as a 5 star game. Its more of middle of the road.

Oddly enough SFxTK was hyped, well received and then hate killed it.

In other words I blame the internet.

hype is the reason why mk’s at evo this year #kappa

Thats the thing… things like player personality, drama, all these outside factors when it comes to the game’s core is what decides how good a game is.
See MVC 3 is trash garbage disgusting and abominable, but because its sooo fun to watch and the players that play it are pretty “colorful” its perceived as an awesome game. This is my gripe with this thing ppl call the FGC now.

How one can even entertain the idea that mvc 3 is better than sfxt is only if they started in this era and judge everything by this measure of hype, and also if theyy are not used to playing various fighters and approaching new/different things as new and different games.

Hype is great but in correlation to this stream spectators and stuff, I hate it

You can’t in one post say something like, people hate on SFxT for highly subjective reasons, and then say the bolded. Let alone the whole post. There are plenty of people who hate MvC3 and plenty who like it.

If I recall correctly, Noel Brown said that Seth Killian believes UMVC3 at its current state is a better fighting game than SFxT. The same guy who has had his own theories on fighting games for years.

I mean there’s going to be that guy that says “SFIV is shit garbage”

There’s always gonna be that guy that says “MVC3 is shit garbage”

There’s always gonna be that guy that says “SFxT is shit garbage”.

There’s going to be different reasons for each game, but it ultimately comes down to the same shit. All of the games truly aren’t bad games in the sense that they all can be played pretty competitively. The general feeling is that these games just aren’t as meaningful to play at a high level of play as the older games. This is a sentiment you can find shared by people regardless of their skill level or involvement in the current tournament scene.

There is just a general issue people are having with Capcom’s fighting games regardless of their skill level. People need to stop looking as a triple tag team ring event between SFIV vs. MVC3 vs. SFxT and realize that people are generally mad at Capcom’s newer fighting games as a whole. All 3 games are being attacked everyday and it is the true big issue. People have had issues with the newer Capcom fighters since Vanilla SFIV released. This is what people IMO really need to look at.

**Why are people giving ALL of the games shit? BECAUSE ALL OF THEM are getting shit. The fact that they all are getting some kind of shit is what the bigger issue is. **

Isn’t the mentality for the hype, if it’s not Street Fighter, I won’t buy it?

To some degree. It’s just when people finally get it they find issue with it compared to the older games SF games any way.

The newer Capcom games are constantly being compared to the older games and that’s what most of the last 3 years of Capcom fighters has been about.

People really need to start talking about Darkstalkers 4, because Darkstalkers 4 is really where this discussion is heading in a nutshell. The comparison to the older Capcom games. ** People buy Capcom…it’s just they shit on it after they buy it and people need to get down to the reason behind this.**

I haven’t heard people talking about DS 4, hell, 20% of the people don’t even know DarkStalkers.

They will pretty soon and they will flock to it as soon as they hear it’s a Capcom made game. The game has always been really popular in Japan, but a new release will give the game more of a market in the US. Anyone who plays Marvel should at least know a bit about Darkstalkers by now since the Darkstalkers games fundamentally built the foundation for the mechanics of all Marvel vs. and animu style games.

Without Darkstalkers… X men COTA, Xmen vs. SF, Marvel 2, Marvel 3, TvC, Guilty Gear and most animu games would not exist gameplay wise in the capacity that they do.

I’m more than certain Capcom will use this to help market Darkstalkers 4 to the masses in their preview and development articles.

It doesn’t take people 15+ years to notice Morrigan, Lilith, Hsien-Ko, Demitri, Felicia, etc.

Between the relative obscurity and the endemic new-game hate, Darkstalkers 4 has approximately a 385% chance of being treated by the community like utter shit.

You must have missed the thread that was made when Capcom renewed the trademark.

Any hype the thread might have had was quickly derailed by The Usual Suspects coming in and bitching that because Ono or Niitsuma would most likely be over it, that the game would be “dumbed down”, “scrub-friendly”, and anything else that would give them a reason to hate on it.

Nah, more like the old heads that hate everything other than what they play.

The newer players will either want to try it out since that’s where Felicia, Morrigan, and Hsien-Ko come from, or they’ll be like “TALBAIN? DAY 1 BUY!”

It’s not going to be exactly like VS (Which almost nobody who talks about it plays anyways)!

It’s funny the amount of hate VSav gets on stream if it’s at a major.

I played Vampire Savior at my local arcades before, shame that it’s not there anywhere, would have kicked some butt.

I’m not sure I follow this thread. Is it really just about the fact that games that aren’t exciting and interesting to viewers aren’t as popular as games that are exciting and interesting to viewers?

pretty much.

and the OP basically goes on to give what he believes are reasons that people don’t find said games exciting or interesting.

Some call it hype, others refer to it as idiocy.
