I’ve been trying to look for vids and info for Vampire Chronicle for Matching Service for Dreamcast for a while now, and it’s like this game just disappeared off the face of the Earth or something. Can anybody direct me to some info and possibly match videos for this game? And if anybody’s up for it, we could start up a discussion about it.
Most people don’t regard the DC port of Darkstalkers as “arcade perfect” so there isn’t as much of a demand for that game.
There’s a PS2 port that’s Japan only in the similar vein to the Street Fighter Alpha anthology with everything intact, minus a few bugs and changes you have to add with dipswitches, so that’s the preferred version.
As for match vids, there used to be an abundance of them but they’re harder to come by nowadays.
I have DarkStalkers Collection for PS2 but I haven’t played it much lately. If you like DarkStalkers you definitely should get it. As for the requests:
www.combovideos.com - mostly Vampire Savior, I remember seeing tournament footage in there and well as footage of Daigo beasting people with Jedah. http://gfb.combovideos.com - some links on the older pages don’t work anymore but is still worth checking it out. www.youtube.com - not as good as the other sites mentioned above but you might want to give it a try.
vampire savior, or the ds series in general, never took off in the states. its too bad, cuz VS1 is such a great game. hell, it took me 10 years to realize it. cant get enough of the game. too bad vs2 and vh2 are such crap games, cuz i like the extra characters in those games, but the engines are all tweaked to crap status =(
vampire chronicles for DC was shunned immediately for its horrible port. its worse than all the console a3 ports (sans ps2 port) and thats saying a lot. so you’ll never see any good matches for the game. only vampire savior 1(arcade, japanese matches) and some vampire hunter 1 matches, which are very rare these days…
I do, it’s my second favorite series behind Street Fighter. I’ve got the DC rev as well as the PS2 collection, and the Saturn release for Vampire Savior and Vampire Hunter. Of them all, I like the PS2 collection the best because it’s got arcade perfect-no load time Vampire Hunter, which is my favorite out of the series (it had way better gameplay, backgrounds and music than Savior. All Savior had was Jedah and Bulleta, who I love, but Hunter is overall a better game).
It’s not bad if you can get the D-pad cover that Capcom put out in Japan with the PSP port of Zero 3. Otherwise it’s impossible to even get off specials, let alone supers. Of course the button layout is still anti-intuative for Vampire, but there’s not much to do about that.
It seems having 6 face buttons in a 2-row, 3 column orientation treated as heresey by game company designers these days.
Yeah, VS1 is the only one that got any real competitive play.
There’s a small community for it on kaillera, but there’s really only like 6 or 7 of us who actually play seriously.
Most people disliked the changes that were made to the engine in VS2.
Kind of like how everyone in Japan hated 3rd Strike Revision 2.
Donovan was pretty low tier if I remember correctly though.
Tiers are very subjective in this game though. Outside of maybe Gallon, Bishamon, Sasquatch, Zabel and Q-Bee, the rest of the roster is pretty balanced.
It’s really sad that this series remains underrated. It’s my favorite 2d fighting game series (Street Fighter is second). I’ve played all five games in the series and I’d say Vampire Hunter (Nightwarriors) and Vampire Savior are creme of the crop. It’s a bit hard for me to say which I like more. They’re both different enough to have their own strenghts and weaknesses. The Saturn ports and the PS2 are pretty true to the arcade AFAIK.
I just wish there was tournament coverage or at least more competitive play outside Japan. Back there, it gets regular tournament play (most recent one this coming August 19).
Both get competitive play in Japan, though Hunter way less so lately. Vids are plentiful and lots of places posted a long time ago still have some up (Thanks to B-IzM and gbursine for most of these, most are in Japanese but it’s not hard to get around):
