So I was playing some online sessions the other day and after a couple of losses I started to put on a “murderous intent”. For my next couple of ranked matches I fought in anger and with the intent to destroy my opponents. Because of this, every time I got hit, it was personal. Every time time I saw my opponent vunerable (i.e jumping, crouchin, recovering after attack, etc.) I capitalized on it.
No longer was I being hit in SF4, but rather it was more akin to me being hit in a game of ST. In other words it meant something. My reaction timing seemed to get better, and my bad habits that kept me getting punished by my opponent seemed to vanish.
I found this interesting cuz usually people say that anger hinders your play and it is better to stay calm.
So what do you guys think? Do you think anger helps you play better? Or does it hinder you from playing well?
Personnaly I find getting frustrated just makes me do more dumb **** or mess up execution more, I’d say calm is the way to go, but I guess whatever helps you concentrate is all that matters in the end.
I don’t play any different when just plain angry, but when there’s a sense of threat, I get more defensive.
Its annoyance that’s the real killer, I just start getting lazy and drop a combo or two.
I get to the point where I focus everything out that’s not the game and it seems like I can read stuff better but once I start cooling down it wears me out and I lose focus.
It’s a graded and situation dependent thing. Too much or if it’s out of general frustration and it tends to go poorly for me. A little can be focusing however.
If you can focus your anger and utilize the adrenaline for faster reaction then it can very advantageous. However if you’re just flat out MAD, you’ve already lost.
Anger can encourage you that your enemy is the only thing that matters at the moment, and makes you want to defeat them no matter what… Daigo’s Ken parrying Chun Li’s whole Super Art for example…
It can also blind, causing you to take alot of deadly risks… If your opponent knows your getting mad, they could also toy with you and set up a trap for you to easily fall for…
Really, learning to keep your nerves steady is the best way to go…
If your fighting in war, you should be calm but firm and strong.
If a grenade comes towards you, you pull your self together and throw it back, not run towards it and smash it violently…

There is absolutely nothing wrong with giving no mercy when fighting… Punishing small mistakes with devsitating attacks is the key to winning. But don’t blind your self with anger… If your opponent is holding a red cape, don’t charge like a bull… There may be a trap that your opponent is trying to setup…
Yes, you should give NO mercy when fighting online… When fighting, its all or nothing… But keep your nerves steady, if you get angry and try to do a cross-up blindly; the opponent will obviously do a shoyuken…
CONCLUSION:
Be brutal, but you must stay sharp too… You need to think while fighting, as long as your anger doesn’t get in the way, you can blow as much hellfire as a thousand suns…
If I get mad I just stop playing. I know from experience, me losing a lot or being angry/frustrated does nothing for me but make me lose even more. If I just sleep it off or something I play better.
I’m not so sure anyone could actually prove that anger makes you play better. And although some may argue against that statement, whatever someone believes to be true is a final say on the matter. In other words; opinion. But in my experience, I have won and lost matches while feeling angry. Mostly due to losing a lot.
Absolutely not. In fighting games or in a real, physical fight.
Anger clouds your judgement and an angry person basically throws away his most valuable tool: intellect. Cool, calm and collected heads will always prevail.
Only thing worse than being angry is being nervous. And a combination of the two is a deadly cock-tail that success cannot hope to survive in.
Stay cool and use your brain (we got the best one on the planet) and not animalistic aggression.
