There was an article recently saying that many big time Hollywood directors would be opposed to a proposed VOD model where people could watch movies 2 months after theatre release but for 30$. The average window of time is 4 months or so.
A lot of boards on the net, seem to have posters that would support this model b/c they claim the cinema experience is lacking these days due to factors like, increased ticket prices, rude cellphone users, parents with babies, cash grabs like IMAx, 3d, etc.
Are these people right or do you think movie theatres will fade or stay strong?
It will only really fade if they start supporting models that start bringing out movies more and more quickly after theatre releases until they completely overtake them. Still though…it’d be hard to let go of that feeling of being in a theatre with everyone and knowing that you and the entire room just watched something great, and you participated in that with them.
IMO theaters probably are eventually going to go the way of arcades in the states. However, it will be a few more decades before we really start to notice.
It’s a combination of home theater equipment getting better, ridiculous ticket prices (3D surcharges can bite me), and general lack of quality material save for a few films each year.
A few stragglers will probably survive due to peeps with limited space wanting a full blown movie experience.
You realize you can replace models with “consoles”, movies with “games”, and theatre with “arcade” and that perfectly sums up the video game industry up until the 90’s?
Never underestimate how cheap and lazy the average (especially American) consumer is.
For most people, paying $5 to rent the newest movie without leaving the couch >>>> Paying $20-$40 (not including gas) to drive to theater with friends and enjoy the theater experience
I’m not disagreeing with you. But arcades didn’t start dying until the game industry rested solely on consoles. Until actual legit blockbusters decide to forego theatre releases for straight-to DVD/Blu-Ray, Theatres will still have a place.
I’m not sure tbh, I mean people use watching stuff as an excuse to gather quite often, and it’s not like cinemas and movies have any stigma attached to them like games do and did just a while ago. (Remember when gaming was nerdy? Or for that matter did parents take their kids to play games at the local arcade when they were still around?)
Cinema still has some life left for quite a while imo.
It’ll be done within 10 years. Unless technology rolls back considerably with shrinking incomes to the point that people can’t afford their own TV, computer and high speed net connection. I don’t think things will get that bad however.
People really only go to movies on Friday/Saturday nights usually anyway. The rest of the time movie theatres are surprisingly empty. During the summer or other school holidays they do get more traffic, but each year younger people embrace newer and better technology and old obsolete models tend to get destroyed. I’d imagine the industry would rather see everyone stream individually off of Netflix anyway, since they can charge more each individual person when taking into account distribution costs and theatre take. If you charge everyone $10 per movie to stream you’re making a lot more than when a theatre charges somebody $13 for a ticket.
It’s an interesting question. I haven’t seen a movie in theaters in at least 2 years. I can’t remember what the last movie I saw was, either. I’ve attempted to go to the movies at least 3 times over the past year and a half, and was turned off by how crowded the theater was.
For perspective…I haven’t pirated a movie since 2001. I subscribe to Netflix, and use Red Box 1-2 times a month. I own a Blu-Ray player, and 42" LCD.
I can see it, no doubt about it.
Not too sure how drive-in theaters died, seem like a good idea (to me anyways) to drive up and be retarded. Well… maybe that’s why it died off.
But yeah, I think things like “movie theaters” will be a thing of the past in the next 20 years.
I remember back in the day, I went to the theaters quiet frequent. I would say, I would try to catch at least a good 4 or 6 movies a month. Now a days, I hit up the theaters once every 2 months (sometimes twice if another movie hypes me up enough).
Cost is getting pricey, however things like “D-Box” and those eat in theaters that show old school classic silly movies tend to bring me back.
You can get pretty damn close to replicating the theater experience at home. When I watch a blu ray on a massive plasma from 6 ft away with good surround you don’t miss the theater much.
