Not anytime soon. The cable companies are wanting to charge 30 a movie to rent new ones just release in theatre. Sure it’s cheaper in some instances but for 30 I could go out with the girl and have an Icee.
It isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The Movie companies know they can quadruple dip on the consumer, so they will do it
1.Make $ initially in the theater
2.Make $ again on home sales
3.Make $ again on cable sales
4.Make $ again on Director’s cut
The only movies that skip the theater are ones they think won’t sell any tickets, so they go straight to DVD.
I think theaters will be a done deal in less than 20 years. Consumer electronics keep improving and rivaling the benefits of a theater-- it’s not the same, but it’s ‘good enough’ for masses who don’t care about the technical details. The information age is killing all things brick-and-mortar, from book stores to music stores to shopping malls. Theaters can’t be far behind. There are important people in high places lobbying to keep the theater experience going, but once home video revenue eclipses the box office year after year, the industry executives will step in and move the business model in the direction of the overwhelming demand. IMO!
^Pretty much this for me. That plus you don’t have to deal with rude people or babies crying and add in the ability to pause it and refill that drink or snacks (for a MUCH lower price I might add) and I think the movie theaters are gonna be getting less and less attendance. Some of the theaters over here have already had to close their doors because of low attendance. hollywierd better get on the ball and quick.
for 30, you can just buy the movie, the icee, and probably a pack of popcorn too. I don’t see them getting many hits for that price.
-Starhammer-
35 mm film is still infinitely superior to Blu-ray so probably not for at least a couple decades
Movie Theater experience will always be there just be cause it can be. The arcade experience sucks because your always playing on broken parts.
