Do you think KOF solidified a "Main" Place for EVO2K13?

UMVC3 THE MOST VIEWED LIVE FIGHTER OF ALL TIME.

Yeah this game has a good shot at staying for next year. Hopefully this paves the way for Skullgirls as more stuff gets added to that game also.

Skullgirls will never make it simply because it’s Skullgirls. SkullGIRLS.

It’s a shame, really.

It won’t be just girls for that much longer. If KOF can get past being “the beaner game” on SRK for years and get on the big stage then Skullgirls can do anything really.

Melty Blood has plenty of girls and it got squeezed in one year also.

It was pretty incredible, I managed to get Xiaohai to play a bit of one-handed 98 (followed by some two-handed rape) in our suite, dude is unbelievable. I would have really liked to have seen a bit more presence for the older games but I’m not complaining.

Are you really this optimistic?

I guess you weren’t around long enough to remember how much of a laughing stock joke KOF being @ Evo was during the dark ages. You literally had to laugh at the concept cuz there was nothing else to do but.

Now…it’s in there. Plus Skullgirls was created by a prominent SRK member so that always has that extra little push. It still depends on how many people Wiz sees takes it up after Evo going into next one. Which has pretty much been the main criteria over the last 10 years (with money being a very close second)

I was also this optimistic when people said that the game would not even take off the ground. I was also this optimistic when people said 3/5 Marvel would take too long as a tourney standard (and now it is minus the earlier part of Evo and a couple other tourneys).

Maybe. But KOF has a fanbase much larger than Skullgirls. And it’s a pretty historic game as far as fighters go, second to Street Fighter. It’s played worldwide and it pulled more viewers than everything aside from Marvel (And it wasn’t a big gap). EVO will want to make sponsors happy, and putting Skullgirls up on main simply wont draw viewers yet, maybe not even that many entrants.

It’s simply too different and unique for the FGC. America will just point fingers and shout “Anime” like the did to Blazblue (Admittedly, Extend does fucking suck.) So…More power to you.

KOF has stood the test of time and now it’s time for it to shine. Skullgirls was a “Flavour of the month” somewhat. Now it’s kind of just fading, I doubt people will be playing this next year.

Well you have to also understand that it’s a game in development also. They’re just releasing patches for it now and on the way to introducing 2 new characters that will have their own intros and pre release hype. Just like there was “launch parties” for the game’s first 8 characters, more of that same buzz is going to come about as new people get added.

Don’t underestimate the launch parties. Plus remember that Skullgirls brought in 100 people for a side tourney which isn’t bad for a side event for an 8 character game with no completely functioning training mode.

Generally the fact that you used the word maybe means you know the option is there and that’s all you really need.

Every game gets pointed at for some shit. SFIV gets pointed at for “boring dp mash”. UMVC3 gets pointed at for “durpy ABCS mashing”, KOF gets pointed out for “lol dem beaners” it goes on and on. Just gotta have support from both players and money really.

Yeah, Sure. But in order for a FG to be successful at any major. It needs players. Plain and simple.

Adding new characters, male or female, will not draw many people to it. It is going to tend to those already playing the game, thus making it more of a niche game that is catered to a specific audience. Not a broad market spectrum. You may gain loyal fans, yet you are attracting no newplayers in order to fuel the games popularity.

More Players = More Hype. More Money for EVO + Sponsors. More Entrants. More Purchases. (Basically everyone wins.)

Skullgirls doesn’t have players. I think EVO 2012 will be its peak year. I just genuinely cannot see this game rising up. It’s going to end up like MB in the USA.

Not that I really should have to explain but the game has a lot more ways to garner attention than Melty Blood did basically. One of the more unique ways (and not even really fighting game related) is that the game has a ton of references to internet memes that helps make it easily enjoyable to watch for people who don’t even play fighting games. It’s just a little thing but I think that stuff can go a long way as a game gets more popular.

To bring up more history, 3rd Strike was once a game nobody in the US gave a shit about until “something” happened also. Then suddenly 300 + man Evo events for the game. History tends to repeat itself so we’ll see.

I’m not saying this will for sure happen or anything like that. It could very well not happen and I’ll just play it on the side and mainly stick to UMVC3. I’m just saying the possibility is there based on history and all of the unique things about the game that can come together with the right updates to bring more people in.

If Melty Blood could do it for one year (the chances of that game getting in were worse than KOF’s)…Skullgirls can definitely get one year or more in.

I’m just saying I’m coming back to this thread for sure IF and/or WHEN it does happen. LOL.

I forgot this is mainly a KOF13 thread so I’ll just kinda leave it as good shit KOF after eons of being looked at as the “can’t afford SF” game.

Skullgirls has pulled more entrants than other EVO games at majors. At UFGT, it had more than KoF.

Skullgirls has players.**

Goddamn post eating phone.

Try 2!

Short ver: skg had almost no real chance, kof does if they figure out how to keep its resource consumption issues (eating up time and floor space meant for other games) under control.

Some numbers cleared that up for me. Fair play.

But. I still do not think Skullgirls is going anywhere. It’s main audience is in America. It’s not played in Japan or in Britain (Can’t speak for all of Europe) Thus you have a niche american audience.

Sure. Side tournaments are cool, but I predict this game is going to have a very short lifespan. I genuinely see no redeeming features, regardless of the quality of the game. (Which is damn good)

Also.

DISS DERAIL

It’s not played in Japan because it’s not out in Japan yet and Japan has shown growing interest in the game.

Ok…now I’m really out.

Yeah, I don’t want to change this to Skullgirls topic but a lot of these things people mention are misconceptions.

I mean, Japan is getting kind of rabid for it. I’ve seen it on Famitsu’s site, the games references were pointed out in a very popular gaming site, Microsoft was getting calls from angry Japanese release week asking where it was (needs a Japanese publisher). It had 500K sold in like a month or 2 without the Japan/Asia release and it’s on it’s way to Steam with the ability to cross play with PS3 users and it’s being put on Origin (EA’s steam).

When we get up to announcement week, gonna set up an informal betting pool on the overall subject, I think that’d be mad fun

KoF’s issues with time are just a matter of tournament organizers assuming that matches will take as long as possible (assume everything ends by time out, all characters are played per match, 2 ou of 3 means 3 full matches, etc…) and plan for that, including the resetting of brackets for finals, and planning accordingly. Of course it won’t always take that long, but the leftover time gets to be used in things like getting the players in their places, button checks and whatnot. Whatever doesn’t get used they can spend on getting ads out of the way or whatever.

As for Skullgirls, its problem is that it was made by and for players of SF and Marvel with improvements that Capcom can easily copy if/when they make more of those games - the people who’d take an interest in such a game are playing SF or Marvel already, so even if the game was heavily promoted at SRK, odds are most people who don’t pay SRK that much attention won’t care all that much for the game if what’s unique to it, the aesthetics, doesn’t appeal to them.

Umm…back on topic from all the Skullgirls talk, I noticed there was a good chunk of international folks that entered KOFXIII, so that will definitely help determine that KOFXIII will be in the next year’s line-up.

In the STA suite on Thursday night, we had some folks from Japan and Chile in our room. That was pretty nice since it gave the STA guys a chance to play with more people outside of Norcal and Socal. I got to play with Oeppu for a bit in my pool (since his first opponent was a shirt monster that never showed up). I hope there’s another KOFXIII tournament that can bring in some international players. And I certainly hope it would be Evo 2013 at least.

It’ll be another EVO at best. An international trip is really heavy on the pockets and these guys are funding themselves for the most part.

Hopefully, sponsors saw the talent and might be willing to sponsor them.

you sure that’s horse head and not cabeza de burro?
just sayin.
