a half second delay isn’t a good connection for everyone, I think his mind is playing tricks on him.
Naw in England im getting online at it’s best. At it’s worst I get a laggy first few seconds until it buffs out and runs like a dream.
20MB Connection…
Man I hope KOF is back next year. It drove me to fly out from Japan on my own dime, hahaha. I showed one of the civilians that works with me the video of Bala vs Mad KoF, and he’s considering picking up the game now (rightfully, it’s in his blood. Haha…)
@David Kong: I actually wanted to get in a convo with you about KOF, mostly because one of the most entertaining matches I’d ever seen was a match on the Runback between Mr. KOF and Juliet K that you and IIRC choysauce went nuts over. “COME ON JULIET K! I BELIEVE IN YOU!!!” That shit makes me roll inside every time…
When MrWizard announced the game made it to the EVO lineup for this year, IIRC he sounded like it was a possibility that was considered for a few years - but probably wasn’t in no small part because it’s been a mostly Capcom-centric event, and the KoF community’s recurring split between the 98 and 2002 versions, with the age of those games right there in their names not helping their case, making it harder to pick one of them to focus on.
The community now had a game to unify them (though some still prefer the classics - I’m no fan of HD combos myself, but they do make for tense match moments, maybe a future game will make them optional, like 98’s Extra/Advanced mode split, and ease the transition for some people), and most important of all, a publisher actively promoting the game in the West (technically 2, but I find Rising Star’s european support lacking), something which can’t be emphaszed enough, as SNKP keeps all their official information and most of their efforts in japanese, probably due to their size as a company.
Everything worked out better than expected - I was incredibly relieved when I saw that tweet about the 1000th entrant, since the MLG situations had me worried. Even if that’s attributed to the shirt (I would have preferred a more tasteful and iconic design, like a Kusanagi eclipse, but it seems after XII both SNKP and Atlus lost the right to ignore Mai), I’m seeing people getting interested and claiming to have bought the game after the finals, so maybe the shirt-only entrants are evened out by the newly curious.
As for a possible update or new game - I’m not betting on a new KoF within the year, but it would be nice if the renewed success of the game would help fund a patch with the Climax changes and little fixes that would prevent rare glitches like the one in the Combonauts video that was posted yesterday.
Even more unlikely, but one can hope, would be the addition of a few more characters - according to this pre-EVO interview with KoF producer Kei Yamamoto, Adelheid, Oswald and Malin were planned, but there was no time to add them in the game. Then again, the original arcade release of XIII had issues, and if more characters were to be introduced, that would probably require an arcade version update to make sure any issues are identified before a console release, and such a release cycle might take longer than the year that will pass until next EVO.
As for the MLG thing, I think scheduling may have been a big part of it with the friday factor - much like one can argue that KoF’s EVO viewing was helped by a favorable schedule. MLG hasn’t completely given up on the game, fortunately (and after EVO, it would be foolish to, really), so with that shot at the game in Dallas in November the community can still show their support for the game at a lower cost too. Seems like a good step to start adjusting how they handle fighting games in general and KoF in particular.
If anything, I’m worried about Atlus (understandably) focusing more effort in their own Persona fighting game, since the importance of their work in promoting the game can’t be understated, and I say this all the way from Europe, where it’s not even them publishing the game.
The grand finals were great, but the nice bonus to them was making Bala not feel like an invincible iron wall, which helped humanize the game, especially when MadKOF’s play seemed to rely less on big combos and more on smart fundamentals and using some shorter but solid combos at every chance, which may give some leeway to interested players in focusing on their strengths, instead of feeling they need to match some incredible execution requirements.
Besides, this created one well of a story: Korean players pay out of their own pocket to attend KoF’s 1st big shot at the main EVO stage, seemingly fall short of beating the current champ, who’s sponsored, and one of them emerges from the losers bracket (where he was sent by a member of his team in the first place), and manages to beat the expected champion.
And he delivers the finishing blow with the game’s Korean character.
This story needs a chapter 2, and nothing short of a 2nd shot at EVO will deliver.
Edit: Forgot a small pice of sort-of-relevant trivia: between MLG Columbus and MLG Anaheim, KoF attendance increased, but SC5 and MK9 attendance decreased - KoF was always lower in both cases, but it was only game on friday+saturday time slots, while the other 2 got saturday +sunday, so I can’t help but wonder what might have happened if the schedules had been switched around a bit between events.
It’s tolerable if you adjust to it. That’s the nature of online. It’d be nice if there was no lag but it’s not happening with 13 at this point.
No offense, but you come off as a whiner who complains about everything.
Man we NEED to make a gif out of the horsehead man. There was one part of the stream where the camera captured Bala and in the foreground the HHead doing random stuff.
Epic.

To answer the question IMO : Do You Think KOF solidified a main place for EVO2K13
- …Fuck yea
There was alot of dedicated KOF players at EVO that have been waiting many…many years for the day that there favorite game would be a main event. Shit I’ve been waiting for the day, but im to broke to travel to the west. Travel anywhere in that fact lol. Living by the paycheck.
There is alot of well known top KOF players now too. ( Romance, Bala, Reynold, Answer, Cafe ID crew, Khaos crew, Etc. ) that are dedicated to KOF13. Followed by other communities in & out the states ( Mexico, China, Japan players, Cali players, & other places here in there in the USA)
Even the top KOF players from China who I love to watch play 98 showed up.
The only and I mean ONLY real bad thing about KOF is the netcode.
However, the game is solid threw an threw an the players and the community that the game has already grown despite the netcode shows it.
As long as the community stays strong and keeps growing from here its guaranteed to be a main game at EVO13.
Dammit man you killed me
hahah man that was one of my favorite matches too! Mr. KoF always likes to troll the fuck out of people, so it’s always great to see that back fire on him hahaha
Also. Whilst im here. KOF need to replace Strekken for a full dedicated section yooooo
This Evo was my first one ever. I’ve been wanting to go for a long time, it’s considered a “childhood/teenage” dream of mine. Originally I was more fond of Tekken, but since TTT2 isn’t out yet on console, I decided to finally try out King of Fighters XIII (thank you STA for introducing me to this amazing game <3), and wow, I ended up getting really into it.
I may not be good like everyone else, but holy shit, I love the community and the fire and passion everyone has. This game deserves to be in next year’s line-up, no…wait, it NEEDS to be on the line-up for next year. I watched the Evo 2012 Moments video finally and fell in love with my Evo dream and King of Fighters all over again. One of the biggest things I remember were the crowd and the top 8 winners on stage chanting “K.O.F”, it just showed how strong the community was.
Ever since Evo, KOFXIII has gotten more exposure and definitely more respect. I knew some folks that seriously care about this game and ridiculed it because “no one” played it, but after Evo, those people were shocked at the amount of hype and love KOF was getting. After seeing how amazed they were, I always tell them, “Welcome to King of Fighters”.
Haha, it’s so corny for me to be saying these things. I just never felt such incredible hype at a tournament. With the amount of viewers and people that entered (real talk, let’s try to ignore the shirt monsters…a huge chunk of my pool were missing >__<), I really hope it ends up in the Evo 2013 line-up.
[[Oh, and hi David Kong. You swung by the STA suite and kept playing around with my alpaca plush. Reiki and you still need to MM!! XD]]
Yo wassup ShinoBee. I apologize, I was pretty not sober while I was there haha but yeah I wish I got to play with all you guys more! Next time for sure!!
Shoutouts to pretty not sober!
Haha, I think you were too drunk to play!! Then again, there were other not-so-sober folks in the room being super silly and all.
Come visit Norcal some time then! I think everyone would definitely love to play you, lol.
Forgot about this post. What issues do you think it has?
Time mainly, its a long, draining game, and pools were way over time, even with the large # if no-shows

If you are talking about time. Say hi to xtekken which lasted forever with all the no shows.
True. Time is an issue, but that can be rectified if they just made it single elim.
But then again. I hav no problem watching long KOF matches. So much knowledge you can download whilst watching.
