Good advice! I wound up ordering this white oak one, but it arrived and when I opened it up yesterday the workmanship was shit. There was glue all over the hilt (can’t remember the Japaneser word for the hand guard) and handle and to make matters worse, there was a small crack just developing at the end of the handle. So I’m having to send it back and might upgrade to a (hopefully) higher quality one if it’s made of the right wood.
I follow these guys on Youtube. I think their videos are great.

Yes, it is a good channel. I believe they practice some form of okinawan karate, kempo or Isshinryu, it is different from the straight, linear shotokan style. My only problem with okinawan karate is that they don’t use high kicks, and I love high kicks.
Speaking of more obscure MA styles, what do you guys think of vietnamese martial arts ? Things like Vovinam viet vo dao or Qwan ki do. Anybody tried this ? they seem to be quite popular in my country (and in Europe in general). At first glance they look pretty cool, I just don’t have much info on them
Smokes, that was a real knockout. It’s funny, I just started practicing tettsui (the hammerfist) and I was wondering if it is actually any good, I mean you don’t really see it used in boxing, k1, mma, etc. I am really glad this strike has real aplications, it shows karate is way more realistic than some people think.
I’m going to practice this strike like in the videos, great stuff.
It’s just a whipping strike to the jaw or behind the ear. Easier on the hands and since it arcs you don’t have to be as precise. Like, you can see the dude throw it almost like a right cross.
Word you’re looking for is Tsuba but thats too bad man. Don’t spend too much money but there should be at least a decent standard level of quality. Where did you order it from? I can give you some recommendations from shops that my GF has visited in Japan. If you are ever placing any really large orders let me know I can get you a big discount.
