Do YOU do any Martial Arts?

your over 18 right? and a white belt?..yeah just train your kata…doubt it will have alot of people in your divison for white belt. dont stress trying to train a million things like its a mma match.

Yeah I am over 18, lol. Yo just practice Katas huh. Will do. I just want to make sure I don’t go out there and get beat, lol. I don’t know much about point sparring, so I guess I better read up on it. So what was your experiences like when you competed?

Don’t be scared to get hit. I mean you’ll be scared, but it happens. What are you going to do if they hit you? Are you going to hit them back?

If they hit you with a weak attack and you attack them back with a strong attack, judges notice, usually, especially if you yell and followup like the attack was weak.

Keep your arms up protecting your head, especially when you attack.
Keep your jaw clenched and your tongue on the roof of your mouth, in case you get hit in the head.

You’re a white belt? Don’t be afraid to call it quits if you get hit hard. You’re not a professional fighter.

Don’t hold yourself back with that mentality. That’s like saying you don’t want to go to an arcade and practice to get better because you don’t want to get combo’d.

Same as fighting games, practice people better than you. Just don’t practice with morons nor assholes because you don’t want to get injured over a hobby.

point sparring is speed tag. keep your hands up…work your blitz and timing. dont do backleg kicks…its a waste of time…work front leg sidekicks…dont do round kicks. sidekicks will show better to judges. mix it up…if you kick follow up with a punch and vice versa. watch your opponents if you can before the match to see tendacies

never move back and forth…always work angles and move to the side.

Thanks for all the advice. I guess, since I am coming from a Judo background I know that this is out of my comfort zone. I am not scared, more so anxious. Well at least I know what to train for, lol.

So practice was pretty intense today. Totally sweat through my gi, lol. Anyway since I am still very new, I basically had to do a basic Kata for an hour. It was cool because I could feel myself getting better with it. Needless to say, I approached my instructor about entering the Arnold Classic and he is pretty excited. He wants me to start building up my knuckles and forearms, he said they aren’t tough at all so we shall see how this goes. it’s getting easier keeping up my lifting regiment along with martial arts training. S/O to @dab00g, @Rodimus @Maxx @ElderGod and @MCP for the advice you guys have given me. I am starting to relax and just focus on bettering myself and having fun with it. Oh bought a jump rope to start building up my stamina and footwork. As of right now I really suck at it, lol.

Anyway here is the form I was practicing all day. I look forward to getting it down to second nature.

Also I let my instructor know that I am a right handed south paw, so he is helping me develop my punches so I don’t punch so much like a boxer. He said my punches are strong but I telegraph them too much. I never expected Karate to be this freakin hard though. Totally different from judo training.

Forms were gay as hell

Lol!!! Yeah I’m not feeling them, but it’s somethin that has to be done I guess. It’s like he told me after class that he can tell I already know how to fight, he just is I guess trying to help me develop a karateka mindset? Eh either way I don’t like doing forms. But it is what it is, lol.

Hey Hyper, are you planning on doing some knockdown karate kumites in the future?

Um maybe? Lol, I’m old with a fam so if I did it wouldn’t be too often. still gotta work and stuff lol. The biggest thing for me is that punches to the face are prohibited. I know as a reflex if I get you with some body shots and your face becomes open, I’m gonna want to punch it lol.

But the way my instructor is talking I think he would prefer me to enter them based off my judo tournament experience alone.

Master Ken, Gun Disarm

I’ve come across a few mac dojos that try to pass off knife and gun disarms like this lol

If you’re in NY the weekend of the September 28th, you can check this out. Here is the FB page also. https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/All-American-Open-International-Karate-Championships/183673295016040?hc_location=stream

This looks fun lol. I am entering my first karate tournament on November 2nd! I’m quite excited that I started training for it the moment I found out (this past Monday) I downloaded a boxing timer app to help me get a feel for rounds. I am doing more footwork drills and a lot of sshadow boxing. Either way I will start posting progress and everything. Oh I’m really embracing this south paw stance. Anyway thanks for all the advice and motivating words from you all. I will be asking more questions

In and out dude. Point fighting in katate is all about evasion

Thanks man. I have been taking your advice about being fast on my feet and bouncing. learning the switches and what not isn’t terrible, just saps a lot of my stamina. So this boxing timer has been one of the biggest help with my training. Right now I can barely last two 3 minute rounds which is not good, but I plan on at least lasting up to five rounds by time I make it to the tourney. Just pushing myself past that limit. I notice I have a problem throwing punch and kick combinations thought. It feels somewhat overwhelming with all that I have to learn, but it lets me know what I am working towards.

do you guys have any advice for someone in high school wrestling? Like little nuances that most people don’t do?

one of the main things that has let jordan borroughs be the beast he is.
