I get what you’re saying. I just look at every facet of this game and it seems like NOTHING was 100% ready upon release. Sloppy.
The only thing sloppy was that pirates decided it was cool to foil Capcom’s marketing team plans. If these were announced at a later date after people were comfortable with the current set of gems, it would have been like either “Oh new gems, cool!” or “Oh new gems, not gonna use it. I’ll stick to what we have.”
They have these things pre-planned for announcement at later dates. Just like character teasers and reveals. Instead of everybody being happy about them being revealed and being usable in this game, half of the people are met with anger that they’re not in the game upon release.
These gems are going to be fine. I suggest people just wait it out. Standard ones are still okay right now.
Capcom clearly wants to cash in on the customization craze that has hit all video game genres. It’s hard to like it, but I also find it hard to blame them. Business is business after all.
Meh. Capcom knows by now how people are. They shouldn’t have made their “marketing plans” so easy to exploit. I mean, of course people are going to crack the disk and have a look–it happens EVERY SINGLE TIME, without fail.
I don’t understand this style of thinking. You’re basically saying that ignorance is bliss. It’s ok for the company to lie to me so long as I don’t find out!
When you purchase something as a consumer you are free to do whatever you want with it. These guys “hacked” it, allowing themselves to access information that was already on the disk. They didn’t steal anything, they didn’t illegally download anything; all they did was gain access to everything that they purchased. Capcom’s intention was for them to pay extra in order to unlock it, but these guys were savvy enough to find a way around that roadblock. That’s Capcom’s problem, not the consumers.
Would you be ok with buying a home that had 3 rooms locked that you couldn’t gain access to until you paid even more money for?
You’re comparing totally different things. If you’re playing something like an MMO, let’s say World of Warcraft is advertising you’re going to fight some super god on the box. Upon installation he’s nowhere to be accessed until a later content patch somewhere down the line, but people datamined all the models and textures inside a data file. I suppose we’re being lied to here as well? False advertising? Things just simply aren’t being delivered right away.
When you buy software as a consumer, you’re usually purchasing a right to use it to whatever the conditions are. Games, antivirus, security, you name it.
If SFxT cost $5 MSRP on release, nobody would care if DLC was already on disc and you had to pay another $5 to get them later.
I know we’re off topic on gems, but this DLC gem whining fiasco is irrelevant if tournaments aren’t going to use them in the end. Let them come out and let the game’s metaplay develop first before crying overpowered.
But… You don’t have to buy it. None of the content really effects gameplay in and of itself.
For the record MMOS are a terrible example to compare console games to. MMOS and PC software are different because you typically agree to a EULA stating that you agree to the companies terms of service to use their product. When you buy your copy of SFxT there is no such agreement made between the consumer and Capcom. Another reason this is a terrible analogy is that while yes, when you purchase your copy of World of Warcraft in disc form, you do own that disk and everything on it - however you don’t play the game offline by use of the disk. You play the game soley by use of the online account you keep with Blizzard, which you don’t own. That’s why you can’t up and (legally) sell your account, but Blizzard doesn’t give a damn what you do with that disc you bought.
You could hack the content on your SFxT disc and play offline to your hearts content and Capcom would likely not be the wiser and wouldn’t be able to raise a dispute because YOU OWN THE CONTENT ON THE DISK, but the second you try to take that hacked copy onto XBOX live you’d likely be banned within minutes due to violating Microsoft’s terms of use when it comes to playing games that have unuthorized modifications on their network.
You still don’t own the data. Point is, it’s still their content and they are doing things their way. Boycott it. I don’t see it changing since it’s a practice tons of companies are doing. Mass Effect 3, which just came out the same day, has on disc DLC content as well. Where’s the boycott?
Ding, ding ding, we have a winner.
You absolutely own the data on the disk, and you’re undervaluing your rights as a consumer if you think otherwise. Making comparisons to other situations (house with locked rooms, car with inaccessible trunk, pants with sealed pockets) is absolutely valid because it illustrates how other venues can’t get away with the same shenanigans that game companies are able to because those examples are much more obvious to call foul on. Data, pay-for-play and downloadable content are relatively new concepts and don’t have much (if any) oversight groups regulating it to make sure things remain legit other than the consumers themselves. That’s why it’s important to know where to draw the line when companies attempt to abuse their consumer base. Even if Capcom was attempting to do players a service by including the data on the disk in order to preserve hard drive space and ensure compatibility, they’re doing it in a manner which is murky at best. There has to be another way.
As far as the other companies, that’s the responsibility of other players and other communities to decide to purchase their products or call for a boycott of the game/company. And I was never calling for a boycott either. I was simply stating that people who purchase their copies of SFxT own the content that is on the disk. My personal opinion is that Capcom is wrong for expecting people to pay to unlock said content, and that (among the multitude of other issues coming to light) has affecting my decision to purchase the game and will affect my future dealings with the company. SFxT could be the most fantabulously fun game ever made, but I’ve chosen to personally boycott it for my own reasons and I don’t expect anyone to follow suit.
^this^ you never own software now a days.

Cant hate em. Make dat money.
It seems everyone ignored the post, but approximately 50 games have had DLC on the disk, which is nearly every single one of them.
Why? Because XBL/PSN have size limits on patches.
If the DLC was not on disk, you would not get DLC.
This is NOT a Capcom thing, for some reason Capcom has caught the attention for it lately, but look at this link - http://www.giantbomb.com/on-disc-dlc/92-4704/
Every single one of those games has DLC on the disk.
If your pissed at Capcom about this, you should also be pissed at every other gaming company.
That’s the crazy part about this… People are only pissed at Capcom because they are unaware that for the last 5 years every game has done this…
If they pour the money back into a Darkstalkers game, I’m a happy camper.
Dude I hear you completely but I saw the other day a 1.6 stream on twitch with 3000 viewers! People still playing a 13 year old game in tournaments! I cried…should I say…nerdy tears. That game is still alive, and so is Quake. UT I’m not too sure about though.
Yeah I’m skipping over this game after this nonsense. I’m gonna continue playing KoF 13 and Skullgirls when it comes out. If anyone wants games on xbox and you live in the southeast add me…
What about games like Oblivion that had multiple DLC content. Like 300MB to 700MB DLC content a peice almost. Same with fallout and etc. I know that shit couldn’t of been on disc.
Just Curious.
From my view the people who bought the game got played. It still looks like a decent game though.
But whatever… I aint buy the shit…
Who started it first, who has been doing it or how long it’s been going on is irrelevant. It wouldn’t be the first time a single participant has taken the wrath. Just because the public has been mostly unaware doesn’t mean this practice is fair to the consumer.
I just looked through my gems (because I got the CE) and I can’t help but think when I reach some of them “why is this one even in the game?” Because I don’t even know which gems are DLC and which aren’t.
If Yoshi wasn’t trash and Lili was godlike. I wouldn’t be thinking about this game at the moment.
