I can appreciate this argument. But I still hate the term “E-Sport” personally. It sounds laughable to me.
I think he’s more like AIDS on competitive gaming. He spreads from game to game when no one wants him, and there’s no way to make him go away.
All Kotaku knows how to do is make interviews with Seth Killian awkward.
Totilo’s article about his experience with SFxT was the worst thing I’ve ever read from them.
Until they get a writer that actually knows his shit about fighting games, they will continue to provide poor coverage and spread misinformation to their readers.
Kotaku = cheap tabloid of video game news sites.
Sounds like you’re still reading it though…
When I hear “DjWheat,” I think of an inbred, Southern white rapper who doesn’t rhyme.
When I hear "Kota-- fuck it. They make my little balls hurt.
Fair enough. My insatiable need for updates on the gaming industry when I get near any electronic device is why I subconsciously browse Kotaku. I stay for the news, not in any way of the content in their articles. If you have a better gaming news site that updates frequently and has a writer that contributes articles of the fighting game genre in a positive light, I will gladly check it out.
Read Giant Bomb for news and SRK for fighting game related stuff. Add in other sites according to taste. Kotaku
is wholly unnecessary and best avoided.
Just remember Kotaku isn’t a news site its just a popular blog so it’s just people spouting whatever they think
I see Kotaku more as a tabloid. Spamming out news, often with a sensationalist spin. Lots of rumours and shit.
I check it occasionally because I’m bored and it updates like, all the time so there’s usually something new.
I check it a lot as well cause they are usually fast but when articles like this happen we shouldn’t take the person who wrote it too serious i think it’s the audience we should be more worried about
so what has djwheat done to piss people off anyway, i’m genuinely curious
I prefer destructoid.
<3
he’s like a virus that goes from new game to new game attempting to promote pro sports and competitive gaming. He came on to SF4 scene earily in its life but had a general lack of knowledge and respect for the game and the players (especially the old accomplished players). From what I recall he helped with the streaming of some “devasation” tournament that screwed another long standing major attendance, and helped stream the WC SF4 SBO qualifier and had no respect or knowledge for some of the players who were underperforming eariler in the tournament but still made it to the final round of the qualifier.
After that he disappeared from FGs and went on to promote something else, and now SC2.
Also the fact that for someone that has contributed so little to the FG scene would even be worthy of a thread like this. I mean do we as players really give a shit if DJwheat disagrees with what a horrible VG website says that someone has to make a thread on it like he’s some type of celebredy(sp?)?
i dunno, destructoid still says fucking stupid shit too
i guess it’s not as bad as kotaku though, but… :1
maybe i’m confusing it with something else
Destructoid does use a bit of sensationalism, but then so does SRK.
It’s sorta inevitable when you’re vying for people to read your news.
i guess part of it is that i hate almost any site that has video game reviews because…well, video game reviews are pretty consistently incompetent and fucking stupid, even when you ignore fighting game reviews
I again recommend Giant Bomb for reviews. Yes, they’re still written for the layman (read: not us) but their reviewers are articulate and thoughtful. Regardless of however they rate a game, you can get a general idea of what you’re in for reading their reviews.
djwheat is a veteran game commentator. He has done shoutcasts for multiple games (WoW, SC/SC2, shooters) and esports events (WCG comes to mind). His most notable and best casts I’d say come from Quake 3, since he was actually competitive in that game with his clan (clan 519). Here’s more info on his backgroundif anyone actually cares.
He’s okay I guess, but honestly not a good caster anymore I’d say. Even if he came back and casted Quakelive (tweaked version of Quake 3), there are way better casters than him right now. Overall, I feel his problem is that he seems to lack analytic depth in his play-by-play commentary that everyone here enjoys from people like Ultradavid or James Chen. Basically he’s a great caster for newbies, but comes off as lacking or annoying to spectators who know understand the games that he casts.
As for why folks hate him here, it was for his horrible casting of SF4 during Devastation 2009. You probably can find the VODs somewhere on the web, but basically he couldn’t provide any substance to the matches because he doesn’t know shit about SF.
Anyway this article is the perfect example of why I hate game journalism. Too many of their writers shitting on games or individuals, because they either lack the skills to write constructive criticism or are trying to boost their image to look cool.
