Django Unchained : How many times can we use the word "nigga" thread

That scene had me rolling. I especially loved the guy who was trying to reason with everyone and be a peacemaker. Can’t remember what he said exactly… something like “Can we all at least agree that the masks, while a good idea in theory, were not well-executed?”

watching this now on bootleg with the gf, cause fuck paying for a QT movie.

kinda mad at how good the quality of the bootleg is, as well. people were standing up n shit when I watched Green lantern.

anyways, bbl with thoughts, ill try and be as unbiased as possible (dont hold your breath though, i generally dont like QT)

Rest assured, we won’t be.

Okay, finished…and overall I was rather surprised!

Alot more “Western-y” than I was expecting from trailers/commercials, which I liked! Alot of GORGEOUS shots set up. Felt like I was watching live-action Red Dead in some parts lol. Doctor is godlike. Leo is godlike. Foxx is…well, I was never sold as him being anybody other than Jamie Foxx, but I still liked him in this movie, ALOT!

people said nigger alot, which didnt bother me at all. especially cause in some parts they pronounced it more like nigga.

ok, spoiler-y stuffs

[details=Spoiler] THE END! will be a controversial topic when talking about QT films I feel. Doc should have just shook his hand. At this point in the movie is where my enjoyment dipped a bit. It felt forced to set up a shootout scene. The doc shooting Candie just felt out of character. The whole movie is him playing along a role he didnt have to, for Foxx’s sake. Because, as he answers earlier to the question of “why do you care?” he replies:

I never set someone free…so I feel responsible for you (paraphrased).

He’s there for Foxx’s girl, he never shows any sense of stubbornness to prove a point or anything. He looks pointblank in Foxx’ eyes, then turns and shoots Candie, shrugs, and is all “srry LOL”. Felt forced to set the gunfight up.

Then Foxx surrenders. I thought they were just gonna shoot him in the hallway, but no. Then hes gonna get his balls cut off, but no. Then hes gonna go to the mines, but no. Then, shoots everyone calmly, end, etc etc. Also somehow the horse he stole knows how to spin out and do the robot.

No, I cant think of a better end myself, other than the boring shake hands leave credits roll. Or shake hands, they leave, Candie drops the smile and is pissed they lied to him, sends his goon squad after Django and Schultz, chase scene, gunfight. Schultz can still die, Django can go back and kill everyone in much the same fashion, blow the house up. Without it feeling like QT just had to throw a shootout in there and couldnt pick a better spot.[/details]

anyways, that aside, funny how gf wanted to see it more than me and I ended up liking it more than her. Would (and likely will) watch again. Most enjoyable QT movie since Kill Bill 1 for me.

nothing even that graphic was shown. like how people hype up the resevoir dogs ear cutting scene, that shit is yawnville

Not much graphic is shown, but the way it’s applied in the movie gives the sense of terrible violence.

Tarantino has proven over and over again that if you craft the visuals carefully, you can build violence into any effect you want without having to resort to overkill. Contrast with lesser filmmakers who show way more blood and guts but get much less of an overall effect to show for it.

Heard he was a dick in person though. Not sure how he rates with Terrence Howard.

I think when the Oscars are coming up you get a lot of high quality leaks as copies of the films are sent to various critics in advance. I’m guessing the copy you saw had ‘‘For your consideration’’ appear every now and then whilst you were watching it?

I downloaded the film as well although seeing Les Miserable the other day makes me want to see it on the big screen as I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and now want the cinematic experience to go with it.

[details=Spoiler]Shultz spends the last 4+ years of his life hunting down “bad people” (the badder they are, the bigger the bounty so obviously they all vary in their crimes) and he runs into a man who’s more deplorable than anyone he’s ever chased down. He was uneasy around him from the start and as is reiterated throughout the early stages of their scheme, not only is Shultz foreign to the horrific nature of slavery, but it’s extremely unsettling to him. A man who kills people for a living and has no trouble spilling their blood from point blank range can’t bear to watch two men brutally fight each other to the death. He can’t stand listening to Django play the black slaver role and treat his fellow black man like animals. He can’t bear to listen to Candie treat a man lower than dog shit and shows his soft-spot when he offers to reimburse Candie his $500. Can’t bear to watch the man get ripped apart by dogs. And then after all of that, the brilliant Doctor gets found out by this despicable man he no doubt has no respect for and has to pay him $12,000 for his life and the life of Django and his wife? And on top of it, he has to shake this man’s hand after having to turn a blind eye to some of the most horrible things he’s ever witnessed and show this man respect and gratitude? Yeah, Shultz not wanting to shake his hand wasn’t out of character at all. It was a sign of his character development through the film. And his reaction was completely expected given that he was a fast-talking smartass. That entire ordeal forces Django to be the hero and also begins to single out the true villain in the film - Stephen.

Once Foxx surrenders there was no way in hell they were going to shoot him. That goes against every action film… ever. “Good guy kills a bunch of bad guys. Remaining bad guys want to kill him in the worst possible way. A gunshot would be letting him off easy.” The fact that Stephen interrupts the castration is another showing of his role as villain. He has all the power and influence despite his role as a slave.

Had the movie ended with a handshake there would have been much more that didn’t make sense, especially in your proposed scenarios, than in the true ending.[/details]

I have a number of problems with this review, though I tend to like his reviews, and they’re rooted in the fact that he complains that it lacks “discipline” and doesn’t embellish on that beyond saying it starts when QT comes on screen (and then goes on to trash Kill Bill by lumping it with Deathproof which is just unheard of). Another thing is he overstates not only how much this conversation of race and slavery is currently taking place, because it’s certainly not the focus of anything beyond a discussion of Obama to the point where I’ve heard numerous people claim that racism is no longer a problem in America and black people “should be over slavery by now,” but on top of that, he misquotes QT about how he made this movie to get people talking about it again. He didn’t say that’s why he made the movie, he said he’s happy that his movie brought the dialogue about slavery back to the forefront.

watching his reviews of Kill Bill now

that guy couldnt stop cumming over TDKR. thats when I knew I would never agree with any of his reviews

however, I get his point about the “discipline”. he’s basically saying QT kept the movie going past where it made sense to do so.

Just finished watching this movie… off youtube.

WTF, why is there a full DVD upload of this movie on there? Isn’t this movie still in theaters?

Golden Globes and Oscars

Yeah Screener copies were all over online a week after the movie was out.

Saw it yesterday afternoon. Thought it was about 30-40 minutes too long and it really dragged in some places. Some of the editing/cuts were jarring. Overall, I thought it was good and thought the use of the “n” word was applied very well considering the context of the film setting.

I’ve viewed this film as well and the nerve of the complaints of a certain word with a certain timeframe is beyond me.

Spoiler

Having your eyes gouged out isn’t graphic? It was shown aswell, you’re trying way too hard to come off as well hard.

Applied very well? This is what I don’t get, it’s still a derogatory term that doesn’t mean any less just because idiots like to use it every third word in a given sentence. Now I’m not saying it doesn’t fit in the context of this movie but saying it’s applied well indicates that there are times when it stings for different reasons.

It was used appropriately at the right times. It wasn’t just used at random and for no reason (like it seems to be today).
