Yeah Im not qualified as well… I play too much 3s
Why doesn’t that PapaRhino guy do it? He still posts on the site.
I’d make a thread (4300ish pp) and keep it going and such but quite honestly 2012 yun thread is dead so I don’t think anyone is willing to put in the effort.
I’m taking Yun and SF4 seriously again, after a two year break of focusing mostly on work and casual Marvel play. Here are some points on Yun that I think are important for anyone seeking to be a specialist with the character.
-With Kaz and Daigo hopping on and off and back on the character, 2012 Yun only has 3-4 months of high level players figuring him out. Compare that to Rufus and Viper, who are mostly unchanged since 08. Safe bet is that no one knows the character yet.
-With all due respect to Hugo101 and a few others, there are currently no high level Yuns in North America in tourney play.
-2012 Yun is a versatile character with many tools that A tier characters have: Change in air trajectory, good reversal, good ultra, great super, solid damage midscreen and in corner, command throw, useful normals. Few characters have all of these tools, but the top class(imo): Viper, Seth, Akuma, Adon and Fei, have many of these tools, and great versions of them. (Note: Viper, Adon and Fei also have safe chip pressure, geez)
-Yun having these tools doesn’t necessarily put in him that tier of characters, but should give us a clue to his potential.
-Even though Kazunoko has returned Yun to a top threat in Japan, most of his matches are lost on a bad uppercut gamble. While these gambles are necessary, he seems to win more when he capitalizes off of safe pressure like meaty cr.MP and st.MP
-This is just speculation and I could definitely be wrong, but it seems very possible that Yun is still a very high tier character in the game. Some of his tools are direct counters to some of the main weapons of good characters. He still builds meter quickly and his Genei Jin/You Hou combos give him a home run on par with a grappler character, confirmable from a simple frame trap or command grab. In the corner, his ultra becomes a bigger threat, similar to Rufus. With his back to the corner, command grab leads to ultra off of EX kicks.
-Yun is a bad character with dive kick pressure as his main weapon, but he has so many tools that different playstyles, I think his matchups will take much longer to figure out than the few months that 2012 Yun has been played as a main by one or arguably two top players. Initially when I decided to get back into SF4 with Yun as a main, I figured he’d be mid tier and I’d just have to live with it, but the more I figure out about him, the more it seems he could be much better than that.
Last, a quote from Justin Wong in a convo I had with him about facing Yun. “I’m excited about facing Kaz and I really want to fight him at Evo.” I asked him about the matchup, and his Yun experience in the US. “No, there’s no real experience facing that character yet. No one knows how to punish Yun.”
I think Yun is a lot better than what people think. Top 10 or even 5 IMO. I’m hoping Kaz gets far at EVO! Btw the forums are looking a lot more lively so go ahead and make that MU thread. I’ll contribute as much as possible.
actually, NB2, kazunoko wins most of his matches. At least from what i’ve seen on youtube and archives and etc. But yes, when he DOES lose a match, it’s due to his baited upkicks. Yun is at least mid-upper tier, and i’m calling it right now that kazunoko has some genei-jin resets up his sleeve going into evo.
As for the MU-thread, if i’m gonna make one it’ll probably be about a month from now. I don’t have access to good players at my level cuz i’m on a vacation in alaska -.-;; so i’m forced to play on pc where connections are ass most of the time… But we’ll see…
Anyone else still playing yun ?
There are still Yun players though these forums seem to have died a bit after the nerfs got announced. We still got people posting stuff though and I feel the forums seem more active these past few months.
The CC tutorial covers some useful stuff but I wouldn’t rely on that tutorial for learning the new Yun. Target combos, normals and specials all got nerfed so certain things shown aren’t possible anymore. Another interesting thing is that the creator of that tutorial; Xian, once played Yun on stream after the changes and did horribly bad if I remember correctly.
I hated Yun when AE first came out. It just pissed me off so much how good he turned out compared to the character I decided to main(Evil Ryu). Since the nerfs I hardly ever run into the character. I like playing rush down though so I’ve recently picked him up as a secondary. I’m really enjoying him, I love the fact that his combos are so easy to do. I come from a shoto background(practically shoto’s only since SF2: WW). So it’s going to take a lot of getting use to since this guy doesn’t have a fireball.
There is a lot of things I need to learn so I look forward to reading this board more and hopefully it doesn’t get too quiet around here. I must say though, in some ways I’m kind of glad that I started now instead of last December. That way I never had to deal with the nerfs like you guys did. As you may have guessed already, it brought me great joy when he did get nerfed. But now I’m actually itching to go find a copy of Vanilla AE so I can always have a copy of that version where Yun and Yang were godly.
My experience with the twins i barely fought them online besides the first few weeks when AE dropped since then everyone went back to, ryu, ken, akuma and evil ryu and oni became popular because their shotos. The twins that i fought online were bad i never had a bad experience them in AE i felt like the only place to fear the twins is just Japan.
Yun was never the most popular character from my experience, but he was common enough. And most of the time, it was decent players who were either better than me or decent anyways so they can do all the combos, genei-jin, and so on. So before AE 2012 hit, it was a pain in the ass to deal with him when he wasn’t being played by a complete newbie or really bad player.
But anyways, in the past day I’ve learned the most basic genei-jin combo(lunge, palms, rinse and repeat) and a number of resets into his cross up shoulder. Just wondering, would you guys still consider the cross up shoulder a viable tactic or is everybody and there mother looking for it nowadays and it almost never works now? And on block is using the cross up MP shoulder safe since it’s meaty? So maybe instead of -6, it will be -2 instead?
cross up shoulder is not only a viable tactic, it’s a good one. It almost always works even if they’ve seen it, as long as you’re not doing it every time. And yes, cross up mp shoulder is safe when meaty. I do it sometimes when they go for a cross up attempt and i knock em out in the air with neutral jump fierce. they land and i cross them up with mp shoulder into mp lunge, works fantastically.
Its not that good because if you playing someone with a dp and they mash its very easy for it to auto correct, its good if you go for it once in a while, its good to reset into palm because they expect to go cross up shoulder, but typically its better and safer to go for cr mp cr mp st mk xx upkick, so after dive kick reset walk forward while the character is recovering from reset to setup a left right mixup.
Other noteble shoulder sets up is if you air to air with Yun with jhp or jmk you can crossup with lp shoulder and combo after or confirm into genei jin.
Man, Yun is still such a good character. It’s sad to see these boards so barren. I mean I get that a lot of people played him for being god tier in AE, but c’mon, EVERYONE LEFT? He has like 9 pages of videos from AE and like 1 and 1/2 for 2012. =(
I still think Yun has all the right tools to win almost any matchup. Sure, some are more challenging but you’re never completely fucked due to a lack of tools like some character matchups.
I don’t play this game anymore but ill still post stuff if i see any JP Yuns players post something on JP BBS also why dont you share your videos to get people motivated how amazing Yun is and if you dont have a capture cam i can show you to a person who can record whatever replays you want
I do plan on posting videos soon, but I admit my Yun is semi-fraudlike for now. I mean, I can beat a lot of people with him but i’ve only been playing him for like a month or so, so please don’t hype me up to have some amazing japanese level yun play for now
I’m just saying, does anyone disagree that Yun doesn’t have a great toolset?
I think he’s good but the I did main Dudley and thought he was solid too(lol). I’ve been fooling around with cammy lately and she feels unbeatable IMO. I still think Yun’s top 10 with only a handful of bad matchups, but more importantly he beats Guile and Sim which are chars I detest (ex Dudley main after all).
I’m right there with you, Guile and Sim are my kryptonite, and I originally picked up Yun just to deal with them, but he’s such a fun and rewarding character I play him against most characters now. Although I still feel Yun/Guile is 5/5 now.
Yeah, Cammy is a stupid s-tier slut. I’d say she’s probably top 3 imo, with Seth and Akuma.
Yun’s a good character, that’s been established post-2012.
Yun doesn’t have too many bad match-ups, I find the cammy match up even or even slightly in Yuns favor.
Also, I will continue to post match-up analysis, i had to be away for a while but it’s not dead.
I think Yun is really unexplored. When ppl discuss and say that Yun loses to X only because they AA his dk well I chuckle a bit. There’s some weird comparison to Rufus going on and ppl aren’t looking at Yun’s other tools such as his great normals, well spaced mp lunge and cr. mp delayed xx cmd grab.
Well whenever you write something I’ll try to help.
