Disturbing find on Street Fighter controllers

I was talking to my brother he mentioned he thought he saw Joe Mad art on the SF controllers boxes and I was like really sweet let me see. He showed me the box art and I said na that’s Jo Chen art and then I noticed the little lmages on the controller when you flip them and what looks to be basicly traced over Joe Mad’s Ryu images.

I’m guessing most people that just like street fighter probably don’t care and are getting the controllers either way, but I don’t know I find it a little messed up. I’m not just saying this cause I’m a huge Joe Mad fan I just think its kinda weak to go over someones art and yeah I know udon has the control to do whatever they want with the art.

It’s not traced, it’s redrawn and maybe you don’t pay close enough attention but this happens in comics all the time. The only gripe Joe Mad could have is if they used his actual art without his permission.

well notice I said “looks basicly traced” I didn’t say it was. I also said at the bottom that “udon has the control to do whatever they want with the art” and even if “this happens in comics all the time” doesn’t make it right . Joe Mad didn’t say anything about this I noticed it so he won’t have a gripe with it. Plus they had to pay someone to do this and what did they say to them? what go ahead and copy the pictures excatly the same? why not just pay mad to redraw the images he did? They still have to pay whoever did the new ones either way and it seems Mad! could’ve done it easier then someone totally redrawing the picture since he probably has the original and could just changed the face.

That’s pretty funny because Capcom does the same thing with Ryu and Ken sprites.

Thats as lazy as Capcom Fighting Jam.

Nathen (love your site, by the way), both links are directing to the same image (the first one). We have to manually change the number to see the second one.

Off-topic:

Nathen, why did Mad write the script for Battle Chasers #9? Did he fight with the writer? That issues script was god-awful…

Okay thanks should be fixed now.

As for the story I don’t really know. Though I’m guessing the guy probably left cause of the time gap bettween the issues and probably just was on another book at the time. I think for all that he did on that book the story for issue #9 was really good…but that’s probably just me. I was amazed he inked some pages too, I think i remember he posting he also inked some of the psm pics he did(scorpion/sub zero) too that’s pretty cool.

thanks for the words about the site, I need to get busy and hurry up and get it finished…well closer to being finished…hopefully it never ends.

Let’s take a look at some Wolverine Artwork

http://wolverine.x-knights.com/gallery.html

First of all you said “its kinda weak to go over someones art”. That implies that it was traced. It’s also your personal opinion on weither or not it’s right, which doesn’t make it wrong, either, just your opinion. This is just splitting hairs, though.

They probably said “hey we need Ken doing a flaming shoryuken for the controllers and we need it fast.” I don’t think Udon sat down and said “okay, use the Joe Mad sequence”, I’m pretty sure that was the artist’s decision.
As for why they wouldn’t just ask Mad! to do it, well, there are a number of financial reasons, not to mention time constraints. I think we are all familiar with Mad!'s track record on deadlines. Plus, Udon did it, and last I checked, Mad! wasn’t on staff at Udon.
I can understand your outrage, being such a fan and all, and I will agree that it’s blatantly swiped, but it basically comes down to “whatcanyado?” I mean, there’s only so many ways you can draw a move. Especially when it comes to video game characters and their signature moves. Who’s to say Mad! didn’t swipe his from somewhere else?

Well sorry I guess I used the wrongs sequence of words. I didn’t mean by “its kinda weak to go over someones art” to mean trace, but I can see how one can read it that way. I meant it like you say blatantly swiped.

I also want to make it clear I’m not trying to bring down Udon or anything or like I’m not gonna stop buying their books or anything. I love what they are doing and actually haven’t found anything wrong that would make me stop. I buy all the issues with the variants whether it’s Joe Mad or not. The work that the artists are doing have been spectacular. It’s probably the only comic I buy anymore. I’m not judging the whole company based on this one incident.

As far as what can I do you’re right nothing, but I do know that Udon can do something. It shouldn’t have just been brought up since I’m a Joe Mad! fan, If this was Lesean(or any of the guest artists) the guys from arxilla and other places I’m sure would be all over this as well I would’ve. You’re also right this type of things happen a lot…I’ve been to many boards conceptart.og has had this happen a lot as well as eatpoo.com. When it does happen it’s usally a rally to get that person to stop what they are doing, sometimes the artist has even worked with the company(same thing here basicly). It seems though if it happens in comics people just let it slide. I also hope that doesn’t come out as sounded like I want the artist getting fired or something, I just think Udon could go to him and say hey could not do that in the future and to come back and say we have take action to make sure this doesn’t happen.

It’s like with what you say “there’s only so many ways you can draw a move. Especially when it comes to video game characters and their signature moves” I’m sorry I’m going to have to strongly disagree. There is thousand…no…endless way of angles and perspectives and styles to draw one pose. I could have lesean, EMC, campbell, Turner or anyone else to draw the same pose and it would look so different even if it was in the same exact hand, body, muscle pose. That’s the action this artist should’ve took…fine draw the same pose in the same angle at least change it enough to be your own.

Hopefully you don’t think I’m trying to flame or agrue with you persoanlly. You’re right these are my opinions, but I think that most and seems like you do to that it’s wrong to blantely swipe from someone. My other strong opionion to is it’s just as important that it should be pointed out and dealt with somehow and to not have it slide.

I believe there’s a fine line between being inspired by something someone did and just copying it, yeah. It really doesn’t bother me either way, though. I thought he changed it more than enough to be his own. It’s not even the same character.

The case with this controller art:

We were specifically asked by NUBY to use the same angle and pose for their pad by their designer. Hope that ends all the puzzlement.

Alrighty well that answered my questions.

hey udoneko I wrote you a PM awhile ago did it not go through? I was really hoping to hear your answers.

Actually, it is not a fairly common practice to redraw someone’s art in comics. That is actually an almost career ender. There are a lot of examples in the old Wildcats series where the artists (not Jim Lee) copied Lee’s old Xmen art and passed it as their own. It is something to be ashamed of.

I didn’t look at the picture, and it is your opinion on whether he has enough influence in it to call it a rip-off, but I just wanted to point out the facts.

Hey Nathen, did you get my e-mail and PM?

That’s not true at all. It’s just not as obvious all the time.

I hadn’t noticed until now actually, good observation Nathen, but in the end the artists can learn from one another and use it as an oppurtunity to improve their own art. Hm its not plagueirism and its not a straight off copy so its not so bad imo.

question asnswered. Udoneko always answer all the rumors. Great site nathan.

Apathy-Inc is right, it does happen all the time. It’s common practice but artists are meant to hide it well.

I’ve even seen it done in the Udon Street Fighter comics themselves

No professional artist should copy another and pass it off as their own, ever. Not even if it’s to “improve” by using other artist’s art. A pro shouldn’t need to “improve” by tracing. A pro should not need to “hide it well”. A pro simply avoids it.

In the case of these controllers, the situation was explained by Erik, and it was essential to the product for the poses to be the same. Udon has an obligation to extend the already existing image of the franchise, and needs to incorporate it into their works.

A “pro” just means somebody that gets paid for their work. “Pro’s” use all different types of shortcuts when they have to get 20 pages a week. I guess “pro’s” who only have to put out 20 pages a month may not have to, but chances are they are not as good anyways. Also they don’t trace the work they just copy the pose, it happens. Get over it.
